The Icing on the Cake

July 9th, 2008 @ 1:57 pm by Mrs. Daffodil

…or rather, the wrapping!  Helpful wedding tip: It’s all about presentation!! smiley307 It’s amazing the difference that great presentation can make.

So…our favors were a bit random. As you all know by now, part of wedding planning is all about compromise: focusing on the aspects you are willing to fight for and letting go on some of the other aspects. As hard as it was, I had to let go on the favors (more on favors that made it in the running some other day!). It was cute, somewhat practical, and guests were either delighted/amused/entertained or possibly all three.

Here is our favor:

It’s a face towel folded into the form of a Chinese dessert! Pretty cute I suppose, but VERY random! smiley405 The parents loved it most because they felt it was unique but also practical, so that people could actually use the towel and would be less likely to toss it.

We found these at an Asian shop that specializes in wedding favors last Christmas when I was visiting my parents in Hong Kong. They thought it was unique and cute, but I was a bit hesitant. They took a picture. The in-laws later saw the picture. The in-laws fell in love with it. My parents liked it too. And the deal was sealed - Mommy Daffodil put in an order and brought all 250 of them with her the week before the wedding.

I went with it smiley405. But not without a little primping and pretty-fying first. We’d be putting a favor at each place setting, and to be honest, Mr. D and I both thought it made everything look quite messy. We invested in some spring green tissue paper and bought extra rolls of the same ribbon we used on our invitations.

It took forever to individually wrap each one, but we did it! Here is the Daffodil family hard at work on their late night shift…

(I’m taking the pic - Mr D’s family and my other bridesmaid who was helping turned in for the night…What would I do without any of them!!)

And here are the favors, all boxed up and ready to go! Those are little engraved personalized tags that came with the favors, with our names and wedding date on them!

Quite a transformation, no? I am happy to report that literally just about every guest took their favor with them!

A funny aside:
After Mr. D and I returned from our honeymoon, we were busy packing up and moving. Two of our groomsmen later dropped by to visit and crashed for the night. Well, given that we had packed everything up, they didn’t have any towels. Yes, you guessed it. We had some leftover favors (we had ordered a lot more than our final headcount) so the face towels came in handy indeed!! smiley307

Very cute! :)

I do have a question for you though - did you find that most people were unwrapping them at the table to see what was inside? We chose to put our favors into red chinese food boxes for this very reason.

Of course, when I put them in there, I made sure the the ribbon (the favors were ornaments with personalized ribbon) was laying just right & the ornament was cushioned well with tissue paper. I cringed imagining people shoving them back in haphazardly after all that hard work! I almost wanted to put a favor on display so that the guests could SEE what they were getting instead of unwrapping it!

(sorry so long!)
:) Becky

@Becky: actually, strangely enough, i think the majority people kept their’s wrapped! i’d say at most a couple people per table opened their’s, and once everyone else saw what it was, they kept their’s wrapped up!

I stumbled across the towels while browsing through dealextreme.com, and I had to share. They are $3.92 each (plus free shipping), but from buyers’ comments the boxes may be damaged.

@lily: @mrscho: sorry, i just saw these comments! there is a “bridal mall” in prince edward, pretty much right outside of the mtr station…there are a bunch of shops in there that sell wedding favors, and quite a few who had these exact ones! you might have to do some price comparisons, as i’m not sure which exact store my mom went to, but they are there! i think in US dollars, we averaged about $1.50 a favor, which is much cheaper than how much they cost if you were to purchase them in the US!
