Okay, so I have a tonne of pictures that I received from my brand spanking new Sister in Law Erin and I have a disc of over 1,000 images coming from our photographer this week, but in an effort to satisfy the masses, I figured I would continue my geek series.
You’ve seen the table and escort cards.
You’ve seen the programs.
But now, my friends, it is time for the cake.
People didn’t believe we would do it. They thought it was a joke. They would laugh along with us when we brought it up and nod when we talked about the logistics, but they all assumed that when the time came, that we would present them with a fondant covered cake adorned with little flowers and birds and whatnot.
Boy were they wrong.
When I blogged about having an Ewok Village Cake, I was dead serious.
So now, after months of planning and organizing and Ewok hunting, I present to you, our Star Wars inspired wedding cake (or more appropriately, cakes).
(My apologies for it being a bit backlit. These are the best pictures I have right now but if I get more from the photog, I will post them in my regular wedding recaps.)
Two days before the wedding, my Best Man, along with my Matron of Honour and me, worked to bake over 50 individually sized chocolate cakes to serve as Ewok huts. As it turned out, because of the size and the richness of the cakes, it was actually better if they were split them in two, but they worked out beautifully and people really enjoyed them, with many bringing cakes home with them.

A closer shot of the platforms, complete with nifty rope bridge.
Thankfully, Mr. Hum was as passionate about this idea as I was, so he volunteered to construct the cake trees (literally). Because we had to transport them from Toronto to our slightly-more-remote country location, he kept their size a little more conservative than I had originally been imagining, but I think it actually worked out for the best that they weren’t huge and crazy. As he is the artisan and actually photodocumented his assembly process, I will let him explain their construction in a subsequent post, but needless to say, he is a total crafting rockstar.

Han and Leia on the bridge. Mr. Hum was insistent on Han holding his blaster so he picked some fresh wildflowers from his father’s backyard for Leia to hold. Plus, he made the Ewoks all do silly celebratory dances which totally made me smile.
In lieu of a traditional cake topper, we went with the obvious choice. I know there are some people who think Anakin and Padme were cool, but for me, Han and Leia will always be the ones who rule when it comes to Star Wars. Leia was a no nonsense intergalactic princess who rocked her blaster as hard as she rocked her gold bikini, and Han was the space rogue that was smooth, smart, and sarcastic enough to win her heart. Plus, he helmed the Millennium Falcon, which can make the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs. Suck on that, TIE fighter pilots!
Anyway, although some of our guests were surprised by our choice of cake, I think everyone really enjoyed it and we got a lot of compliments on how well it all turned out.

This is wonderful. I love it! I think having a cake that is unique to you and your tastes just makes the wedding more memorable!
