Putting a geeky wedding together take a lot of hard work. If you want something unusual (and for that thing to look good), it needs to be custom made and custom making things, as many a DIY bride knows, can be incredibly time consuming.
When we first started thinking favours, we thought it would be cool to get customized chocolate coins and put them in little yellow custom made Mario Question Mark boxes, similar to this one below (minus the Mario figurine on the top):

But the closer the wedding got and as we realized how long all of our other custom projects were taking us, we realized that, if we had to hand paint 70-80 little yellow boxes, we would lose our sanity. Therefore, as much as we wanted to keep the wedding personal, we started to think about outsourcing it. We wanted to go with something edible and to go with someone who would be cool going along with our wacky theme. Plus, we did have cost to think of on top of everything else since we were sticking within a fairly modest budget. In wedding world, this is a pretty tall order, but thankfully it was met when we met the lovely and talented Ms. Stephanie Pick of The Queen of Tarts in Roncesvalles.

If you’re in Toronto, I cannot recommend Stephanie highly enough. She got what we were doing, was responsive to e-mails and our gingerbread favours rocked!
She made . . .

Yoshi Egg Cookies!

Flower Cookies!

Mushroom Cookies!

Star Cookies!
And, when we went to pick them up before the wedding, she was sweet enough to admit that the cookies had been easier than she expected and ended up giving us a discount on them! I was shocked - I mean how often do you luck out and find a vendor who does amazing work and is so honest to boot?
Anyway, the cookies were a complete hit to the point where, at the end of the night, it turned out, while we were dancing, someone had taken a bunch of extras and Mr. Hum and I only had one measly cookie to spare! I was sad that someone had taken my star, but definitely not sad about the cookie’s taste - so yummy!
Have any of you done unconventional favours? What did you do?
(Thanks to my friend Chris who took pictures of all the cookies since I forgot to tell our photographer to!)
