The Suave Avocado

July 14th, 2008 @ 12:58 pm by Mrs. Avocado

It took me a few months, around 6 stores, and a couple dozen dresses to find a dress that I love. Mr. Avocado only needed 2 stores and 2 hours to find his suit. Such is life.

We decided that buying a suit would be better than renting a tux, as we are regular church goers and he would be able to wear it weekly if he so desired. Even if he doesn’t ever wear it to church, he will still be able to wear it to the corporate functions he has every once in awhile.

Confession: This was a full price tux, and we had intended on buying one on sale. In my opinion, it’s rather silly that the bride spends $1000 on her dress while the groom is expected to budget $300 or so on his suit. After the wedding, I get to sell my dress and keep all of the money to spend however I would like. I’ve already started daydreaming about all of the pretty things I can buy with the money…

Anyone else spend almost as much (or the same amount, or more!) on the wedding suit as you’re spending on your wedding dress?

We just checked out Nordstrom’s this weekend for suits. There was (what I thought) a fantastic suit on sale that looked great on Mr. ST, but he wasn’t into it. While I know they’ll get more wear out of their suits, I was still hoping his wouldn’t break the bank, either! He’s still looking so hopefully we find something that works within budget.

We spent the same for his suit as for my dress, but that’s only because I got an awesome deal on my dress:) They were both right around the $400 mark

@Miss Gingerbread: @Miss Pomegranate: Keep these awesome new nicknames coming ladies, I’m texting them to Mr. Av as I go. I was just complaining about our lack of nicknames for each other yesterday! We used to be of the boring “honey” crowd, but it’s honey no more. Hotvocado and Suavocado!

How about “Avocado-beau”? Not as good as Miss Gingerbread’s, but that’s a hard one to beat!

His suit was actually a little more expensive than my dress, and of course adding the tie, cuff links, shirt, inside vest to the total… his outfit will be a lot more expensive than mine. But he will wear it all again, and it is worth it (he looks awesome in it).

Sharp! We were initially going to go cheaper on the suit or do a rental, but ended up spending almost as much on the suit as the dress (thought it was a reasonably priced dress, so it’s not quite so alarming). Nordstroms - not exactly a bargain hunter’s haven, but they do have excellent service and sharp tailoring.

What a good lookin’ man! Definitely Suavocado!

Your first paragraph made me laugh - So true! I went to five salons, tried on a gazillion dresses, and searched for hours on the internet - FI walked into a tux shop without doing any prior research and picked something out in roughly 20 minutes.

We’re the opposite of most people. We are probably going to spend a lot more on his suit/tux than we will on my dress….but I enjoy sewing so I will be making my own dress(it will probably end up ~$100 depending on fabric choices). Also, I will be altering my dress into something I can wear again but my fiance never wears suits so I doubt he will wear his suit again very often, if ever. ^_^

Mr. PN bought his kilt and jacket - I’m pretty sure it cost more than my dress but at least he will wear it again!

@Miss Pinot Noir: PN, where is he going to be wearing his kilt all the time?

BRS says:

My DH wears his kilt pretty often actually.
Other weddings (it’s very popular among our friends), rehearsal dinners, family things.

He looks great! I think buying a suit is so much more practical and special for the groom than renting a tux. My husband’s suit was on a good sale but it still cost twice as much as my dress! Admittedly, though, my dress was an awesome steal. (That ratio goes down when you factor in alterations… sigh).

i got my dress off the clearance rack for $99, so hubby’s suit ($400) was definitely more expensive. :)
