The Lady Parts

July 15th, 2008 @ 5:25 pm by Mrs. Sundae

I had my first fitting on Saturday and of Wednesday afternoon, I still didn’t have any undergarments to wear with my dress. I am someone who requires, shall we say, a lot of support up top so I knew that I needed to seek out a professional. In all honesty, I had been avoiding it. I have had so many bad experiences searching for the perfect strapless bra or alternative garment… the last time I went to a really large department store for help, I am certain that the saleswoman got to first base. It’s definitely an exercise that calls for little modesty.

Anyway, I was to the point where it had to be done. No more denial and avoidance. I had heard of Intimacy before because they claim to be the “Bra Fit Specialists” but I also knew they were pricey, so I had avoided it until now. But on the big day the ladies need to be in their proper places and I also plan on some relatively serious dancing (you know, assuming we DO actually find a band), so they need to stay contained in their designated areas. If now is not a good time to drop some cash on a great bra, when is?

One of my friends decided she should check it out as well, so we made appointments for last Thursday. The whole ordeal took less than an hour and I walked out with the greatest strapless bra ever… and that’s saying A LOT for me. It’s got this silicon gummy stuff around the edges so it almost adheres to your skin without feeling uncomfortable at all. I swear I could stand on my head and nothing is moving anywhere. If it’s at all possible to maintain one’s dignity during this experience, my “fit specialist” achieved it. I didn’t feel embarrassed at all; it was like being in a room with one of your girlfriends… a girlfriend who happens to be telling you that your current bra size is three cups too small. That’s right, three sizes. A small child could now take up residence in one half of my bra, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t fit perfectly.

I can’t find a picture of it online and I refuse to publicly display pictures of mine for fear that you’ll think it’s a set of earmuffs for an elephant, but I assure you that they’ll be able to help you out at Intimacy. Since bustiers just don’t work for me, I’ll be rocking some Spanx and my new strapless bra under my dress. Were any of you dreading the search for underthings? What did you wind up finding?

You’re not alone. Most women are wearing the wrong size bra. I finally got fitted this past December was saddened to hear that I was also wearing the wrong size bra, but glad that I’m wearing the right size now, even if my size now is of the double lettered variety. :\

Same thing happened to my MOH and my mom! Alas, I am not so well-endowed, but am on the prowl for some spanx for the big day!

Yep, most women are embarrassed to let the fitter into the dressing room, and grab whatever they think should fit. Three sizes off isn’t unusual! Let the fitter in! Especially for specialty bras that can fit differently than everyday bras. I’m glad that you had a good experience, and hopefully other readers will be encouraged to get a properly fitting bra. If you have one that fits, a bra is actually comfortable! And flattering!

My best friend is also extremely blessed in this area - my head literally fits into one of her bra cups.

I’m just your average large B, but my dress (the J Crew Goddess gown that I’m having personalized) is low cut with spaghetti straps, so a traditional bra won’t do, and most strapless bras would show due to the low back. Instead, I’m going with a sticky bra - the Nu Bra. It pushes the girls together like whoa and stays put. My only issue is that it doesn’t breathe, so the girls feel sticky after a while. Hopefully the champagne will distract me : )

Did you go to the one in 900 N. Michigan? I went there once and *loved* it. Not only did I finally get bras that fit correctly, but I went up two cup sizes which was a nice little ego boost for a Saturday afternoon. If their bras weren’t so pricey, I’d be buying them from there all the time!

I’ve gotten fitted before at Victoria’s Secret, but I need an upgrade for the official Wedding Undergarments. For those of you that did Spanx, what do you recommend? This lil bee needs to rein in her ample backside, stat!

There is nothing like standing naked from the waist up in a room with a woman old enough to be my grandma touching my boobies and telling me I need more nipple coverage. Sigh. But getting a bra that was fit for you is golden!

haha love the title of this post! it took me a while to find one…i bought like 3-4 different bras! and unfortunately, while i loved the bra i ended up with, it doesn’t have any tags that show what company made it, so i don’t know how to tell people to go get it! i got it directly through my alterations lady so i have no idea where she got it. not helpful, i know…sorry!

i do have a strapless bra that i love though, in case that helps anyone. i didn’t end up wearing it b/c i needed something with a lower back, but i wear it all the time for just normal events and going out! it is by le mystere.

Had a similar experience myself a month ago and wondered if I might be wearing the wrong size (for the past ten years or so…) My suspicions were confirmed - my former 36B self (where I got that size I have no idea) is now a 34D - I’ve told all my friends to get measured and buy new bras - it makes a major difference in comfort and how they look under your clothes! And whoever invented Spanx is a saint!

I’ve never had a fitting…too shy…but now I think I may need to check it out!

I hate strapless bras…even the most comfortable ones end up feeling not so comfortable after a few hours. I’m very anxious for my dress to come in so I can figure out the undergarment situation and locate a comfy bra!

Ohh! I love Intimacy! I was in Houston on a business trip and wandering around the mall with a sinus infection feeling generally pathetic and there it was. I went in, bought lots (too many) things, but it made me feel better! (Haha. That’s got to be the worst story ever. But well fitting undergarments are always great! And the people in the store were very helpful! Too bad they don’t have them in Canada.)

I hear you about the HUGE bra sister, when I finally went in for a professional fitting I came out with, what I like to call, my She-ra Warrior Princess Bra, but I’ll be damned if the ladies don’t stay put now ;)

I bought mine from the bridal shop I got my dress at. Not the prettiest bustier in the world, but it does the job nicely.

It amazes me how many women decide to go braless on their wedding day. My alterations lady made the comment that “You wouldn’t go to Walmart with out a bra, but you’ll go to your wedding without one.” At first I thought, ‘How true!’, but then I realized that there are probably plenty of women who DO go to Walmart without their bra on (and shouldn’t)!

Glad you found something that’ll do the job right!

Yay! That sticky stuff is the BOMB. I have a Wacoal stretch lace strapless (convertible) that is majorly comfortable. Lucky for me though, I can wear a super-strength armor bra for the wedding because my dress has thick straps. I’m searching tomorrow for the perfect bra… seriously, although it would be nice to find something pretty, I’d rather it just do its job.

I once took the underwire out of an old bra. It fit as a headband.

I plan on wearing an off the shoulder 1950’s style wiggle dress with sleeves, I am having it custom made by the wonderful Miss Brache from etsy… I also recently had a BA surgery so that I will look the way I want to look in my dress come wedding day… I am in a struggle now because I have no idea what size I really am now, and will have to wait until right before the BIG DAY (Oct. 5) to go get a bra being as I am still severely (almost rediculously) swollen! I don’t think we have “Intimacy” here in Las Vegas… any other suggestions on a nationwide or westcoast chain?

and just a side note Miss Zizzy… I agree, the lady who created Spanx, Ms. Sarah Blakely IS infact a saint… since Oprah helped her jump start her undergarment line and talked about it soooo much that she sold over $100 Mil. worth of Spanx… she donated $1 mil. to Oprah’s angel network last year… she made Oprah cry because NO ONE has EVER given Oprah that much money in donation!

Va Bien makes some fabulous low backed bustiers and strapless bras that defy gravity. Seriously. And they go up past E! Between that and HerRoom.com I got everything I needed. Because Saks, Nordstroms, Neiman’s, Macy’s and Dillard’s let me down. To say nothing of One Hanes Place and Vicky.

Yay for you!!!! Can you share the maker of your strapless bra? I too have had a great experience with Intimacy…I walked in wearing a 34D and was told I actually wear a 32 DD/E (depending on the maker). Makes for much pricer bras because I can only find that size in higher end department stores but I’ll pay whatever I need to for a proper fitting bra! But I am still on the lookout for a great strapless bra! Please, please share!

Another vote for Intimacy! I went in as a 34B and came out a 32D. D! It’s crazy, but everything is MUCH more comfortable now.

I just looked and the tag of the bra says “PrimaDonna.” It doesn’t have a name on it anywhere besides that, so that’s all I know - hope that helps!
