Always Your Shadow (Band)

When Mr. Cherry Pie proposed, I was so impressed that he’d custom-designed my beautiful engagement ring all by himself. I never figured him for the type to create jewelry!

One of our big wedding projects has been figuring out what to do about a wedding band with the unique shape of my e-ring. The design of my band, rather than being a solo project, is something we’ve undertaken together.

We brainstormed a design that we liked, based on some sketches provided to us by Greenlake Jewelry… a small shadow band to be cast in platinum with two bezel-set diamonds. It’s meant to pair with the engagement ring to create a complete set, rather than being worn individually.

We gave them the go-ahead to create a wax model for us. This is what it looked like in wax:

Greenlake makes the wax models with a really spiffy machine. First, they create a 3D model of the ring’s design and input it into the machine. Then, the machine meticulously carves the design from a block of wax using jets of hot water. It’s INSANE what this thing can do. Here’s a video of it in action:

I liked the wax model, but it was hard to imagine how it would look in real metal, rather than green and plasticized. After Greenlake makes the wax model, they cast the band in metal, but leave it free of stones and embellishments pending your approval. We went in to test the rough-cast band… and I forgot to take pictures. :(

Needles to say, it worked well, so we gave them the go-ahead to finish the band and appraise it (so we can get a new rider for our renter’s insurance!). Less than a week later, it was back, together with a series of gorgeous professional photos.

First, we have my wedding band by itself. Notice that it wouldn’t work well as a solo ring- the up-sweeping “prongs” could be pretty vicious!

Next, here are the rings as they fit together, perfectly, to form a whole and complementary design:

What do you think? Does it work well?

Is anyone else out there trying to design a wedding band that complements a unique engagement ring?

very pretty Cherry Pie! We had the very same issue with my engagement ring and had to have a custom shadow band made.

So lovely! I am having my grandmother’s sapphire-and-diamond anniversary band reset as my wedding ring to go with my sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring.

That looks great and is so helpful for me to see! I have a complicated e-ring to match as well (also custom through GLJW, who I love). I can’t wait to see what they’ll help me come up with to match mine.

That’s really cool, and beautiful too! I’m putting off thinking about our wedding bands because the price of platinum is through the roof(!!!) but we need to get on it soon!
