Gimme Photos and More Photos

July 16th, 2008 @ 11:40 am by Mrs. Flamingo

I had mentioned that I wanted to put photo cards on the tables so that the guests could upload their own wedding photos. After much debate, I decided to go with Flickr simply because you can upload the pictures directly - no need to download a program. I designed a folded card which I placed on each table. They were bilingual (French & English) with a message on one side and the instructions on the other.

In my last post, many of you mentioned that you were interested in knowing what I was going to write on my cards…Well I am happy to share it with you!

Front page:

Share your memorable photos with us!

We would love to discover your amazing photography talents!
We invite you to upload your photos & videos on a photo sharing website where all of our family and friends can admire your creations taken throughout our special day.

The more photos and videos the merrier!
Looking forward to seeing the great photos you took

How to use Flickr.com
1 - Save photos onto your computer
2 - Go to www.flickr.com
3 - Log in using username and password
4 - Start uploading photos and videos
5 - Name and explain photos and videos

Don’t leave anyone guessing. You can explain what was being photographed; include comments about the day or write an amusing caption to go with your uploaded pictures.

Did you happen to miss anything? View all the moments that you might have missed. Thank you for sharing in our wedding day!

Because I knew many of our friends were going to take pictures and they would all be over 1 MB each, I invested in the Flickr Pro account for just $24.95 (U.S.) per year. The free account only allows for 100 MB of images and as of now, I have over 500 pictures from our guests with more to come!

Here are some of our many pictures taken by family and friends:

Our beautiful church

Exchanging vows

Partying away

Our first dance

If you’re debating whether or not you should do this… I say yes all the way. It’s 24.95$ well invested, especially when you were disappointed with your photographer. (more to come on that)

Did you have photo cards? Was it worth it for you as it was for me?

Wow, that first pic looks like it was taken by a seasoned professional. I’m definitely doing this!

I put some info about the flickr account on our tables but then spread the word after the wedding too. While checking the site during an airport layover, I was THRILLED to see pictures being uploaded.

I upgraded to the unlimited account recently so I can upload my pro pics to share with family as well.

Does Flickr allow you to download pictures that guests upload? Or do you have to just ask friends to send those? thanks!

I agree, Mrs. F, best idea ever! I borrowed it from Mrs. Lemon and Miss Cream Puff, and I’m so glad I did… we have about 1200 pics so far, and I love each one! It makes waiting for pro pics so much easier.

Lee: yes, you can download the uploads! Just click on the “all sizes” button on a photo’s page and it’ll let you choose the resolution.

Did you give 1 photo card to each guest? Where did you place it?

We did this, though I opted for picasaweb rather than Flickr, just because I’ve always liked picasaweb more, and it gives you 1GB of space for free (and you can upload all your pictures without having to download any software) so I didn’t have to pay for using anything. We wound up with roughly 1100 pictures in total, which fit in the 1GB space, so I didn’t have to pay for additional space. I also love PicasaWeb since I use Picasa to organize my own photos, so I could download the entire albums rather than having to download each picture individually. Worked out fantastic!

the next step up from the one-time use cameras! plus a lot cheaper. i plan on using this for myself.

for my friend’s wedding, i secretly collected pictures from our friends and put it together in a mixbook and gave to them as a gift. they LOVED it especially since they were disappointed with their pro pics. in fact, whenever they bring out pictures of their wedding, they just show the book!

@eveline: I put one card per table. And would mention it throughout the night so people would take down the information.

I’m considering this option and already have my own personal Flickr Pro account. I’d prefer to keep my existing account as-is, without 1200 additional photos of the wedding and having the wedding attendees all know my password (even if I change it down the line). I am curious to know if the Bees who have done this have given out their personal account name/password, or created a separate Pro account just for this purpose.

One more question, where did you get the camera image……your cards are so beautiful.

@Ham: I have a free flickr account, but for the wedding I created a new account and upgraded with pro.

@eveline: I found a photograph of a vintage camera and vectorized it like I did with my chandelier image. (All using Illustrator CS2)

I already have a flickr pro account, it’s a personal account though. I wonder if I should make a new flickr pro account just for this cause of if I can do a flickr “group”.

amysue says:

I would create a separate pro account from your personal one. Adding photos to groups could be too complicated for some guests; the appeal of having an unlimited account already set up would probably draw more photos in than the alternative. I think $25 is pretty cheap to have all of your digital guest photos consolidated in one place!

we did this and, so far, no one has used it except me :( It’s been nearly 3 weeks since the wedding, so I’m guessing people just aren’t going to do this. Oh well. Guests have still sent around photos — just not using our site. So I think if you’re going to do this, don’t spend a ton of extra time or money on it. We just included it with our welcome letter, so it’s not a big loss to us.

Mrs F, love the way you tied all your paper products together so beautifully. Don’t even have to look at who posted to know immediately that these were some of yours. They’re beautiful!

This is one of the best ideas I have heard of, I am going to pass this one on!

love, love love!!

So stealing this and using free vistaprint postcards. Not quite as cool but the price is right.

Going to hand them out at our e-bbq, showers and the wedding
