About Mrs. Cookie

One is Silver, the Other Gold

Easy. Painless. And didn’t burn a hole in our pockets. I was shocked that only an hour after we walked into Shane Co., we were purchasing our wedding rings. CRAZY!

Yesterday, Mr. Cookie and I decided to go look at wedding rings — just look! Since, Mr. Cookie had bought my e-ring at Shane Co., we thought we might as well go back to look at wedding bands. Again, we had no intention of buying because we were going to shop around for the best deal; however, we probably would have spent more in gas trying to find a better value.

First up, Mr. Cookie’s. He is a gold kinda guy, but I’m a silver kinda girl; so, he decided that a two-tone ring would be best. Mr. Cookie also wanted a little bit of etching — something that was very elegant but not gaudy. He tried on several different rings, bandwidths, and metals before landing on this baby — a two-tone gold and white gold ring. When he said to me, “This is my ring,” I knew we had to buy it. Sorry, you can’t really see the etching in the photo, but a good photographer I am not!

For me, you might remember from my e-ring post a while back that I wanted a simple wedding band for the simple kinda Cookie I am. The challenge for my ring was to find the right bandwidth and metal. I was contemplating either a 2 or 3mm band, but the 2mm next to my e-ring was just too small, so 3mm it was. Next, since my e-ring is platinum I didn’t want to mix the metals; however, the price difference between white gold and platinum is astronomical. We’re talking almost $900 dollars. I did look at Blue Nile online beforehand, and knew that their price for platinum is cheaper than Shane Co., but I still couldn’t justify the $400 difference between white gold and platinum. To be honest, unless you look at the two extremely close-up you can’t tell the difference. So, I decided to buy the white gold 3mm comfort fit band. I’m really happy with my ring, and it looks so pretty next to my e-ring!

Like I said, we didn’t intend on buying our rings this soon, but I am glad we did! One more thing to check off on our wedding to-do list. In addition, after leaving the store I had to promise Mr. Cookie that I would not take it out and wear it before the wedding — to make the moment he slips it on my finger more special. This is going to be a hard feat to accomplish, and I know I will be weak at times, but I will try!

And yes, I was a Girl Scout (but only a Brownie) and Mr. Cookie was a Boy Scout! Ever since we bought the rings last night I can’t get that song out of my head, “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other gold. A circle is round, it has no end. That’s how long, I will be your friend…”

I think you did a great job of photographing the rings. Just turn on your macro and you will be able to capture some beautiful detail shots of the etching.

Isn’t it great when a wedding task is a snap?

Haha, I used to sing that all the time!

too bad that quote is too long to have on your ring! it’s perfect!

We also bought our rings went we “were just looking.” I think we did it in about 30 minutes. I don’t regret it at all. We did end up exchanging FI’s ring - but because it wasn’t comfortable, not because he didn’t like it. It was actually a big relief to not have to spend hours and multiple car trips looking for rings.

Classic choices for both of your rings! Very nice.

However, you may want to reconsider the platinum vs. white gold for you. I know the plat is a lot more expensive (and believe me, I hear you loud and clear on the saving money thing!) but I have read that mixing metals in your wedding set is not recommended because platinum will “eat” into gold that it is constantly rubbing against. It has something to do with the difference in hardness between the metals (I’m not exactly sure of the chemistry here, but it’s something to that effect). Anyway, you may want to do a bit of research about this since I’d hate for your wedding band to get ruined after a few years of wear because of the mixed metals.

Ditto kamb on the mixing of the metals thing - bad idea long term… besides, you’ll have to re-do the rhodium plating on your white gold and it’ll never really quite match the platinum as it will wear (slightly) over time. Since he also bought your engagement ring at Shane, they will let you trade in your current e-ring for exactly what he paid - maybe you could get the same e-ring setting in white gold to match your white gold wedding band. Then, maintenance for years to come will be much easier… It’ll also save you some money as trading in the platinum setting for white gold might just be enough to cover your wedding band. It’s something to think about.
