The Recap Will Recommence

July 16th, 2008 @ 10:57 am by Ms. Dahlia

As soon as we’re done moving!

Image found here.

That’s right, next week Mr. Dahlia and I are moving to NYC! It’s been quite a whirlwind since he received the job offer on Friday, but I promise once we have relocated to the East Coast, I will post about our reception as well as the surprises we had in store for our guests.

In the meantime, anyone have any tips for surviving an inter-state move?

LABEL LABEL LABEL!!! If you know which box contains the things you are looking for, you don’t have to unpack 10 boxes to find the spoon you need to eat your cereal!
Also, use this as a purge opportunity. As you are packing really think about whether or not you need to keep something. If not - make a pile and have goodwill come and pick it up. No point hauling something you really don’t need/use anymore… especially since I cannot imagine any world where moving TO nyc means an INCREASE in space.

I live in NYC. Listen - don’t bring much… you definitely won’t have a ton of space.

If you can afford it, do an all-inclusive. It’s so much less stressful when someone else packs all your boxes, loads the truck, and does all the heavy lifting. (Been through 2 cross-country moves, one into NYC. Now that I’ve gone the full-service route with Allied, I can never go back.)

Make sure you book your building’s freight elevator, if it has one. It’s a union thing - we’ve been left out in the cold before.

If you’re bringing your furniture, MEASURE IT FIRST. You might need to get a new couch or bed. :) Get rid of any low and wide furniture (dressers, entertainment unit) as you’ll probably have to go vertical.

Good luck! NYC is a blast.

I’m moving to NYC, too! I just got back from an unsuccessful apartment hunting trip, actually :-( Hopefully your move goes a lot smoother than mine has so far!

Welcome to NYC! Throw away/sell/give away 90% of your books and at least 50% of your other stuff. Seriously. You won’t have the room for it and it’s a pain in the butt to pack and unpack. We got rid of over half our stuff and are still too cramped. Also, little/tall furniture is key and try to find stuff that does “double duty” - like a sofabed or coffee table with storage. We bought an IKEA wardrobe because the closet was way too small and that was an excellent decision for us. Our relationship might not have survived otherwise :)

Also, get rid of your car. Parking/gas is too expensive and you won’t need it. I don’t miss mine at all. The subway will take you everywhere you need to go and Zipcar can help you fill in the rest.

Besides that, I would say break it down into chunks. We loaded the truck with my stuff one day, loaded my fiance’s stuff the next day and drove halfway there, then the third day went into the city and unloaded. I know some people may not want to stretch it out, but it worked out really well for us and we didn’t feel stressed at all. We had friends load, drove the truck ourselves, then hired two guys to help us unload in NYC. Good luck!

Sell most of your furniture, it probably won’t fit in your new NYC apartment! :) Seriously, if you’re going to hire movers, get references and check online to see if you can find further opinions. I have heard endless horror stories about unscrupulous movers!

I agree with Mandy: Put toilet paper, paper plates/utensils, and a roll of paper towels in a bag/box that will stay with you the entire trip. Nothing sucks more than getting into your new place, having to pee, and not having any toilet paper :( If you’re extra ambitious, throw in a bottle of all-purple spray cleaner, too.

The best thing I did the last time we moved was to get wardrobe boxes. Instead of having to take clothes off of hangars, fold them, and pack them, you just take the hangers out of the closet and hang everything on the box rod. Wonderful!! Plus, there’s extra space at the bottom for stuff like shoes (if you don’t mind them getting knocked around) or sports equipment, like balls.

Also, assuming you’ve seen your new place before you pack up, and you have an idea of where things are going to go in the new place, it’s really helpful, when you label your boxes, to not only say what is in them, but also where it goes. That way, if someone is helping you unpack the truck, it’s obvious if a box goes in the kitchen or bedroom, without having to ask you. Good luck!!!

We just moved from L.A. to NYC about 4 months ago. We did it ourselves in a moving van. The best gift? A friend gave us a coconut smelling packet to hang from our review mirror. It was a bit of luxury on our long drive. Also, we go a lighter converter for our ipod stereo for something to listen to along the way…Welcome to NYC!

I moved from New York to San Francisco 2 years ago and then just moved to Philadelphia! We sold all our furniture and shipped books/dvds/other media via media mail with usps. If you ship ANYTHING, make sure you do some sort of confirmation/insurance and make a list of what was in the box. New York is a great city but super small so if you don’t think you’ll need stuff - sell it! It isn’t worth carrying it across the country! Good luck!

make sure you book the freight elevator in your building on the day you move in! you don’t want to have a truck full of stuff and then not be allowed to bring it up to your place!

also… put everything into legitimate moving boxes. it is SO much easier to unpack when everything is clearly labeled and packaged well.. keep rooms separate from one another (don’t try to pack plates in sheets or anything like that- too difficult to unpack!)

good luck!

No tips, just wanted to say GOOD LUCK! You’ll have a fabulous time in NYC (be sure to visit Brooklyn often, it’s great there).
