Something Old…

July 17th, 2008 @ 4:45 pm by Mrs. Pinot Noir

My grandparents were married for over 60 years before my grandfather passed away in 1992. They had four children and started their own business running a flower shop in rural Wisconsin. My grandmother wore her engagement ring and wedding band every single day of their marriage. When she passed away in 2006, the wedding jewelery was passed along to my mother (her only living daughter). My grandmother had worn the rings for so long - 75 years - that the metal from the two rings had fused together into one.

When it came to choosing my wedding band, I was at a complete blank. There was no particular style or design that I was looking for but I did want it to match my engagement ring. Like Miss Cherry Pie, my hand designed engagement ring made finding a band a bit more challenging. The unique style of my engagement ring band meant that a simple wedding band just wouldn’t look right. Ultimately I was hoping to find a white gold band possibly with some small diamonds, but nothing too big or flashy. And if the ring did have diamonds, I wanted them to be either vintage or conflict-free for the same reasons that Miss Sweet Tea posted about!

I considered three ecofriendly wedding band options:
1. Use a family piece
2. Buy from a reputable business
3. Buy vintage

Use a family piece…
As you may remember, Mr. Pinot Noir designed my engagement ring using a diamond from his grandmother’s collection. I thought it would be a lovely idea to use a ring from my family as the matching wedding band. The only ring available was my grandmother’s and I didn’t want to separate it from her engagement ring. My mom wears my grandmother’s rings and I know that they will be passed along to me someday.

Buy from a reputable business…
The next option I considered was buying a ring from a responsible vendor. Some of the ecofriendly businesses I checked out were:

Green Karat: Green Karat uses recycled gold in all of their pieces. You can even recycle your own gold for store credit or use it to make a ring. This is a great option for taking a piece of family jewelry and creating a unique piece with sentimental history.

Brilliant Earth: Brilliant Earth uses conflict free diamonds from Canada, fair labor and environmental practices, and donates 5% of profits to African communities. I liked the wedding bands at Brilliant Earth the most because for me they were the most traditional.

Leber Jeweler: Offers the Earthwise Jewelry® Collection, combining conflict free diamonds, fairly traded colored gemstones and environmentally conscious precious metals.

While all the vendors offered some beautiful pieces, nothing really made my heart flutter…

Buy vintage…
Finally, I considered buying a vintage wedding band. This was the option that I was most interested in. Ultimately my goal is to reduce, reuse and recycle - in that order. I definitely wanted a wedding band so reduce wasn’t an option here but by purchasing a vintage band I could reuse instead of buying a new piece (even if it is conflict free and recycled gold).

I searched in several different stores looking for wedding bands. They can be a bit harder to find than other vintage jewelry because they are usually kept in the family or worn into a state of disrepair (as was the case with my grandmother). Another challenge in purchasing vintage wedding bands is that some designs can’t be sized (like eternity bands) so it is best to find a ring that fits without additional sizing.

While we were in San Francisco for a big wedding planning weekend, we had a chance to visit a great vintage jeweler, Old & New Estates.

It was here that I found the perfect wedding band! The band is an art deco style from the 1920s. It contains 9 tiny channel set diamonds into the front of the band (about 1/3 around), and the rest of the band has a hand carved art deco design. I have never seen anything like it and I knew the minute I put it on that it was the right ring for me. It was the perfect combination of simplicity and elegance! I think it goes very well with my engagement ring which is wonderful because I plan to wear them together once we are married.

My wedding band has by far been my favorite wedding related purchase and I can’t wait to wear it! How did you choose your wedding band? Will you wear your engagement ring with your wedding band?

It’s gorgeous!

I am having my grandmother’s sapphire and diamond anniversary band reset in white gold as my wedding band, to match my sapphire and diamond engagement ring. I think I will usually wear them together, but the design will be such that I can just wear the wedding band alone if I want to.

They look like they were meant to go together — the e-ring band nice and simple, the wedding band with a little pizazz. Good job!

What a great match! Looks great!

I was also a little stumped about what to do with my vintage engagement ring. I knew that I wanted a wedding ring that would coordinate with my e-ring, yet could also stand alone. I thought I’d just get a plain band - but then I happened across a vintage band with the same millgrain and dogwood details as my e-ring! Definitely not a matched set, but well coordinated. Serendipity! I felt like it was all meant to be :)

PS: The story of your grandmother’s rings - or “ring” - is amazing and so touching! What a handsome wedding photo, too.

Thats a great match!

In the scavenger hunt of my proposal (no not kidding - click and watch the slideshow) Adam sent me to our favorite unique boutique and jewelry store. We love that place and we know the owner.

A few months after getting engaged, Souther Wedding Style Magazine had it’s launch party here in Pcola and we got to go! It was amazing.

Our favorit Jeweler was there with wedding rings! She had just started getting into the market and had some really unique stuff. Shes a small boutique so she only carries artistry work. But sure enough, after looking for a bit, we both found our rings! Just have to order them now! =)

That’s beautiful!!!!!

I am having a HUGE problem finding a band for under $1000! It’s an adorable solitare with an S curve to it, unfortunately I can’t for the life of me find a ring to shadow it (although there are a million rings with the opposite curve!). I think it originally must have been part of a set. I’m beginning to try to find peace with the idea that I might have to wait for an anniversary a few years in the future to afford what I’m looking for!

OH MY GOD. You probably will not believe this, but my wedding band is VERY similar. Extremely similar. I must take a picture and e-mail it to you!! My ring looks exactly like yours with the channel-set diamonds, but my stones go all the way around. On the outer rim of the band, there are Art Deco carvings. My ring was my great-grandmothers, so it is also from the 1920s. But the setting is exactly the same - the same square openings behind the diamonds and everything. Amazing!! :)

I find it ineresting how we all feel that using vintage stones in our rings (I am guilty, too!) somehow launders them for us - as if any and all culpability rests with the original purchaser.

Is it at all likely that stones mined in the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s or earlier were mined under humane conditions? While they may not have financed civil wars, they certainly financed empires.

No judgement - as I say, my engagement ring was rebuilt from a family ring - just something to ponder.

@Jennifer: It is true that the vintage stones were not necessarily mined in humane conditions but I do think it is better to reuse than to buy new. An even better green move would be to go with a different stone and not promote the use of diamonds at all. The ultimate green move would be to go without a ring entirely!
