Trashing a Dress

July 17th, 2008 @ 8:25 am by Mrs. Tiramisu

Ahhhhhhhhh!

Noooooooooooo!

How could this have happened!

Okay, okay, that’s not my dress. The owner of that dress gave full consent and permission for its destruction. In fact, she complained, “I don’t know why we didn’t throw that thing out years ago.”

Well I will tell you why, Nana.

We didn’t throw it out because although it may not mean a lot to you, it sure means a lot to me. My Mom’s Mom, with whom I share a middle name and a fierce stubborn streak, is one of my favorite people in the whole world. Not only is she generous, humble, loving and honest, she’s also just downright awesome. She has more energy than a small child, a stronger work ethic than any CEO, and more spirit in her than, well, than someone with a whole lot of spirit.

It’s for all these reasons and more that I asked my Nana if she’d be willing to give up a small piece of her wedding dress for me to wrap around my bouquet and carry with me on my wedding day. She of course agreed, because if there is one thing she does lack, it’s a sense of sentimental value for material things. I suppose she gathered enough memories in her fifty-two years of marriage to my Grandpa to not need a white dress in a closet to make her happy.

Here’s the piece we’re using next to the ACTUAL FLOWERS that are going to be in my bouquet!

Carrying a piece of her wedding day down the aisle on mine is also a way for me to remember my Grandpa, the man she married in that gown. He will be celebrating with us, although wholeheartedly, only in spirit. I like to think he’ll be somewhere up there grinning.

September 9, 1950

I just couldn’t be more excited that she’s letting me have this. What’s your something old?

I am actually going to wear a third generation wedding gown. It was originally my grandmother’s and my mom wore it too. I am going to have some alterations done to it, but it will be so special to wear on my wedding day:)

So nice! I’m going to use a baby bonnet converted into a handkerchief that my godmother/aunt bought for me when I was born…as well as a small pin my mom purchased in the hospital (which serves a double purpose, because the gift shop was out of “girl” pins, so it’s a little BLUE dot attached to a ribbon.)

beautiful!
I used a hankie (wrapped around my bouquet) that belonged to my great great grandmother. She had the same initials as my beloved grandmother, so it was particularly poignant.

I will be wearing a pearl bracelet that was my paternal grandmothers and a pearl necklace that was my maternal grandmothers. The necklace used to be a double strand of pearls - it was given to my grandmother by my grandfather on their wedding day and she wore it for their wedding. Many years later she had the two strand seperated and gave one strand to my mother and one to my aunt.

That’s a beautiful idea! I found an antique rosary from the 1950’s with glass beading and my florist will be using it to wrap around my flowers.

My mom is giving me a broach that was originally my great grandmother’s. I never knew her, but my mom absolutely loved her, plus it’s a fabulous but subtle piece of jewelry. Just a circle of purple rhinestones, and one of my wedding colors is purple! I told my mom that I was thinking about using purple, and she went right upstairs into her jewelry box to get the broach. I’m going to attach it to my birdcage veil in lieu of a big fascinator - it’s beautiful enough to stand on its own!

This is such a sweet way to honor your grandpa.

My mom is letting me use parts of her dress to make my garter belt. That will be my something old and I love the idea of incorporating my parents wedding day into mine.

i got nervous at first but the meaning of the dress is amazing. maybe with her dress you can have aquilt made out of it! That is a beautiful something old.

My something old will be the tiara that my Godmother bought me for my Quince Anos (Sweet 15) all those many years ago :-)

Mine “something old” is a hankerchief that my great great grandma embellished with crocheted lace… It’s beautiful, but I totally plan to cry my eyes and nose out with it all day!

I’m doing the same thing! My grandmother passed away four years ago, and my aunt, who has had her wedding dress since, offered to let me cut part of my grandmother’s dress for my bouquet.

The dress is beautiful - gorgeous ivory satin with a lace overlay, that I’ll be wrapping around my bouquet. Like you, it was sooooo hard to cut it!

My grandmother hand made my wedding dress out of a beautiful satin that I picked out and also incorporated pieces of my mom’s own wedding dress into mine. Yes, not only did my mom let me cut her dress, she let me destroy it. All that was left were two sleeves and some lining. So my dress was my something old and new. I also wore a pearl necklace, peacock feather broach (on my jacket), silver watch and used a clutch purse that all belonged to my great grandmother.

being as I am evr so fond of anything 1940’s & 50’s… it kills me to think a fabulous dress from that era is being destroyed… the sentimental idea of it all is fabulous… what a great lady she must truly be to give up something she has held onto and loved for so many years, to fulfill the wish of her loving grand daughter… I wish my nana had kept her dress too now…*tear*

side note, what a beautiful wedding day photo. I LOVE IT!
