About Mrs. Cherry Pie

Who says you can’t always get what you want?

J. Crew’s lovely Martine Satin Clutch is on sale for half off!

Slap my ass and call me Sally.

I’d pretty much discounted being able to get one of these bad boys. The regular retail price of $98 was outside of my “bag-I’m-only-ever-gonna-use-once” budget, but the champagne colored clutch had always struck me a nice wedding day accoutrement, an accessory that would look good with my dress and well serve the important (if inglorious) purpose of schlepping my stuff.

Of course, when I went to go buy one, they were sold out of the champagne. Go figure.

(They still have the “royal violet navy” and “rhubarb berry” colors…)

I decided to call in the cavalry… Once I realized I had one.

See, I’ve worked with J. Crew before. I’ve got “people.” Or so I’d like to think. When I was looking for bridesmaids dresses, waaaaaaaay back in December, I was stalking a particular, soon to be discontinued color. Because there was limited stock available online, I emailed their “event specialist” to help me find sizes. After all, they list an address RIGHT THERE on the webpage, so I figured why not use it.

The specialist was a very nice lady named Rachel who, over the course of the next month and a half, tracked down every size I needed for my five bridesmaids. She also generously suggested accessories to go with the dresses when my MOH emailed her last month.

I’d already tried the Hive classifieds, and eBay, and googled for the clutch when I thought, “Why am I doing all the work looking?” and emailed Rachel.

Just a few days later, she emailed me back to say she’d found me a clutch in stock in a store somewhere, and they’d ship it right to me.

How… convenient!

So, ladies and gents, there you have it. I guess you can have your cake and eat it too. Just remember, when you are searching for something, whether that something is an object or an idea, don’t be afraid to ask for help, especially from someone whose job it is to help people just like you. And don’t be afraid to ask the Hive by posting on the boards or in the classifieds either. In my experience, the “Hive Mind” knows just how to find what you are looking for!

My mother knew exactly the dress that she wanted for her MOB outfit, but the catalog (Coldwater Creek) sold out of the style waaaay too fast and long before she tried to place an order. So, she went to a retail store and asked the saleslady to work the network. They tracked down exactly ONE dress in her size … 1500 miles away! And shipped it to her, and she was in business….

Nordstroms does the same thing. They looked in their computers for a pair of shoes I needed and POOF free delivery later (and 6 days) shoes were at my doorsteps!

Brilliant! I’m going to have to remember these wise words of advice in the future! And, I looooove the clutch — so kudos to you!

Since several people seem to want your clutch after you are through with it, I thought I would post about a cheaper, though slightly less chic but still remarkably cute clutch at *gasp* Target. It comes in white or champagne and really is much cuter in person. And, it’s only $16.99!!

Oh yeah, just as a case-closed… I ended up getting the clutch (after some fiddling with price & adjustments) for $34.99. Yay!
