Mrs. Shortcake's Picture
Mrs. Shortcake, Vancouver Age and Occupation: 24, Marketing Manager/Children's Lit Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Master's Student/Personal Trainer Engagement Date: August 7, 2007 Wedding Date: October 2008 Blogging Since: Venue: Ceremony in a historic church, tented lawn reception at a golf and country club About Me: 1950's housewife sent to the future, reborn as crafting-obsessed, jill of all trades. I enjoy decorating, writing, baking sweet things, singing show tunes/dancing in public, wearing pearls, and knitting sweaters for my furbaby, Harvey, to chew upon. I heart pink, and believe that sparkles are the new black.
About Mrs. Shortcake

The journey to our cake topper has been a long one, a long road strewn with sparkles and satin.

Originally if you remember, I lusted over Ann Wood’s birds, then decided to make deer cake toppers. However, as cute as my deer cake toppers were, there weren’t any deer anywhere else in our wedding, and Mr. Shortcake and I had little inclination to redesign our wedding around them. So, ix-nay on the ambi-bays, and back to the forest they went.

Back at my (very pink) drawing board, surrounded by the usual flying birds and chattering chipmunks, I got to work on what has turned out to be the most satisfying DIY projects OF MY ENTIRE LIFE.

*Cue Alan Menken*

I’ve been dreaming of a bit of lace
and a delicately painted face
that’s what makes my heart begin to patter
People tell me that I shouldn’t care
Buy a cake topper from anywhere
but I’m glad to say I did decline
and made my true love…
…my something-old and new love…
…may I present my true love,
Isn’t it divine?

I really tried to create an accurate likeness of our furbaby, Harvey:

…except I painted him at his crazy-excited-face finest! :)

What do you think? Does my paper maché topper pass the test? :)

@MagPie518: @pancakes: I won’t be posting a DIY, just to keep my options open after the wedding. you can however find instructions for paper maché on the web, and MS weddings has a couple of issues that have examples of DIY cake toppers of other styles (quilled paper, doves, sheaves of wheat, etc)

Mrs Petunia also got a cake topper custom made to look like her and her hubby, but out of clay!

This is seriously one of the most amazing things I have ever seen! I was going to make a bride and groom and all of our animals out of fimo, but the bride turned out ugly so I gave up. This is SOOO much better!

YEAahh.. ditto w/ miss P - you should make some extras and sell them on etsy! That’s insane-o crafts-woman-ship right there! your cake toppers look like they’re straight from a disney animated movie about your own personal love story!

I second everyone else who A) can’t believe you made these all by yourself and B) thinks you should sell them on Etsy. Amazing!

Miss Shortcake, I want to start this comment off by saying you are my most favorite Bee EVER. I lurk and eagerly await your posts on all kinds of vintage-wedding-goodness…but I have to now come out of the shadows and comment for the first time…please please please tell me you are not really going to use that cake topper? It’s creative and cute, but also a little “creepy”. I guess it really doesn’t seem like something that would fit into your wedding? I hate to write this, but I wanted to be honest and not want you to think back and ask yourself why on earth you went with that cake topper.

Hey Ms. Shortie,

I certainly hope you take everyone’s words of encouragement and turn it into a little business for yourself! I was wondering though, out of curiosity how long they took you?

@mhb: thanks, that helps a lot. I actually didn’t go with the deer cake topper because another poster told me they were ridiculous and asked if I was going to put frosty the snowman on the cake :( I appreciate your support!

Ok, well I guess I am confused as to why I am a “hater” now, just because I gave an honest opinion that seriously, a Bee who I think is just flawless, asked for. Did miss Shortcake not ask what we all think? I’m pretty sure if someone wanted to go through their wedding planning process without opening themselves up to many different opinions and comments then they wouldn’t be a Bee. I wasn’t trying to be mean or hateful, just honest (my own opinion). I guess anyone who comments has to always agree with the Bee and never have an opposing thought or at least express it in any way. Why even have a comment option? I sincerely apologize if the original comment was taken wrong. I definitely could have chosen my words better. But in the end, I still feel the cake topper seems out of left field. I do not know Miss Shortcake personally so maybe it speaks volumes about who she is and what her wedding is about. I don’t know…just a comment. And my last one at that!

@sushipea: We appreciate your honesty sushipea, and your bravery in commenting against the grain. Just sometimes, it’s good to remember that even though we are bees, we are people with feelings that, even though they’re put out on the line, still can be hurt. I was disappointed in your original comment because I interpreted the “creepy” bit quite harshly - and I worked my bum off for something that Mr. Shortcake and I really like. We’re both really goofy, cartoony “left-field” kind of people,. so the topper suits us. I’m sorry if your feelings were hurt by anything.

Love, love, LOVE these cake toppers!!! Seriously, bro… Amazing! I think these are ridiculously cute and creative and contrary to some people’s opinions, I don’t think they are “creepy” at all. You continue to impress and astound me with your creativity and craftiness! :)

I think it’s cute. I mean none of us are professionals at making the personalized cake toppers.

I went the route of re-panting a plastic couple and glueing some things to them so they’re look more like me.

But your version is very personal and important to you. Not to mention a nice conversation piece.
