I’m Melting!

July 21st, 2008 @ 12:40 pm by Mrs. Avocado

My core body temperature always feels like it’s ten degrees higher than what everyone else’s seems to be. Which means I am a sweater. Not so much an armpit sweater, but a makeup-melting, hairline-soaking, red and splotchy face sweater. Having pictures on the beach will be awesome, but not if my face is going to look like this:

Image found here.

I am planning on bringing blotting sheets, but other than that I have no experience with makeup melting prevention. Usually I just try to accept it and pretend like it isn’t happening, but I don’t feel like that will be the best method in Mexico. I think I have sweat-proof mascara and eyeliner covered, but I have no idea what to do about the rest of my dripping face.

Any secrets that you would like to share?

I used MAC Blot Powder through out the day. It was 93 degrees out on our wedding day, and it kept the normally super-sweaty-Toucan from being shiny. :)

my makeup guy used a spray that sets the makeup and aids in helping it from running terribly… wish i knew what kind it was but i’m sure you could find something at sephora… also use a “mattifying” primer, and of course blotting paper or powder :)

I had the same problem. I learned this trick from an aesthetician…. apply witch hazel after you cleanse your face, then apply oil-free sunscreen/moisturizer, then on with the make-up (try to use mineral make-up). A 16-fl oz bottle of witch hazel can be purchased at Target or Rite-Aid for less than $2.00.

I don’t know if this will control face sweating, but after reading Miss Tiramisu’s post I think I’ll try this out to control my oily face:

Maybe you can try a sample…

Same problem here! I brought up the concern with my makeup artist and she told me that spray-on foundation (the kind with the machine, not from a can/bottle) works better than liquid/cream in this situation. Also, you might want to check out stage makeup. It’s a bit heavier, but they’re made to withstand hot stage lights!

Try a mattifying lotion. I have very oily skin and it really works! Honestly, it feels a little strange on, so it’s not something that I wear every day, but when keeping my skin looking non-oily really matters this does the trick. I used Cosmedicine’s Medi-Matte Oil Control Lotion: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P131811

You might want to try visiting a store that sells theatrical makeup. In addition to having makeup that is designed to be worn under hot stage lights, they should also have some makeup sealer that may help it hold up longer.

IF you have the money…
I saw a wedding show with a girl like you. She ended up getting a couple shots of botox in her hair line. It worked really well for her too and she was literally drippy before.

What about a primer? I used Smashbox Photofinish and it’s supposed to be the best, but I didn’t really put it to the test!

MODEL IN A BOTTLE!!!
My sister got married September 1st 2 years ago and honestly, that stuff SAVED our make-up. It was soooo hot outside and if it weren’t for that, all us BM’s would’ve looked like melty-puddles in satin.

You spray it on after your make-up is applied and it stays put! It doesn’t feel like there is anything on your face either. I don’t wear much make-up anyway (just mascara and blush usually) so I wasn’t sure how this would go, but it was fantastic!

And it’s only $18.00 for 2 oz. (300 sprays!)

Here’s my melt proof recipe that I have used for special events when the temperature is steamy. I’m really oily in the summer and this has always kept it all put and looking fresh.

After cleansing use a sweep of mattifying toner, there are lots of brands to choose from sometimes it’s called oil control toner.

Then use a makeup primer, I LOVE the Smashbox one cos you can’t feel it at all!

Use only water based semi matte (or full matte if you don’t mind) foundation.

I usually wait 10 minutes then blot with tissue or blotting papers then proceed with the following steps…

Set foundation with powder.

Do rest of makeup as you would normally. Before you put on mascara (which is my very last thing to put on.) spray face with MAC studio Fix+ keeps my makeup looking like I just put it on for hours and refreshes my skin so I don’t look too powdery.

If using eyeliner pencil I recommend setting it with a similar shade of powder eyeshadow so it doesn’t travel to under your eyes.

Yes it’s a lot of steps but totally worth it. I’ve gone out in 100 degree weather to events and I’ve never had a melt down!

Cheaper than botox: Glycopyrrolate, trade name Robinul :) Sorry, I’m a nursing student so of course I went the pharmeceutical route! This is a pill that decreases all your body’s secretions, so be aware you’ll have dry mouth - but if you’re even remotely considering botox, this is much less expensive and will certainly keep you dry the day of. I just recently got some for my wedding events. It’s not something I’d do daily because of the dry mouth, but it works great for special occasions!

I like bluejaywalking’s suggestion: I’ve found that the primer helps with keeping my makeup on & in place

I do a lot of stage makeup and this is what I use…

Ben Nye Final Seal

Last summer I spent months doing HEAVY drag makeup for a rock musical. Bright hot lights, and LOTS of running, dancing and jumping around. I would just spray this stuff on the actors after I was done their makeup and it stayed put through the whole sweaty, high energy show.
Plus, it’s only $5!

@wintersprincess: I bought the Makeup For Ever ripoff of Model in a Bottle and I was no impressed. I will have to hunt some of this down and give it a try.

I get shiny shiny in warm weather, too. For about 3 months now, I’ve been using Caudalie’s mattifying liquid as my only moisturizer, as it’s the summer, that’s all I need. I think they have a second mattifying something-or-other, which I may double up on for my big day. Sephora carries this great brand!
