Kate Spade, Wax Seals, and a Handle

July 21st, 2008 @ 5:26 pm by Mrs. Espresso

Last week I was so excited to receive my bridal shower invitation in the mail. They’re the beautiful kelly green, Kate Spade invites that read, “Big Card, Small Party.” I love it! I already knew what they looked like, because my awesome bridesmaid Kristie bought them a while back when shopping with me. I protested that they were too much but she insisted, seeing that they were one of our wedding colors. So sweet.

Since Kristie bought the invites, my lovely MOH Chris was in charge of sending them out to everybody. And in here lies the funny story. Chris knows I love wax seals. I stamp them on the back of almost all of my letters because they’re fun, pretty, and make me feel as though what I’m writing is of real importance. :) So when I received my invite in the mail and saw the wax seal on the back, I thanked her for being so thoughtful and awesome. Which is when she dove into her story - she’s going to kill me for sharing this with you by the way!

Chris had an incredibly difficult time putting wax seals on about the 20 invites that went out. While slightly time consuming, I didn’t understand why 1) She had developed an extreme hatred towards them, and 2) Why it had taken her “hours.” She was either being a bit dramatic or something had gone terribly wrong… it was the latter.

You see, my dear best friend mistook the wick on the wax for a handle. So for each seal, she would hold the small wick (handle) between her thumb and finger, and position the bottom of the wax over an open flame until it began to melt. Then she would hurriedly rush it back over to the envelope. But because this method took so long, many times the wax would cool before she stamped it, causing her to have to start all over again.

I felt so bad and laughed so hard, when she told me this story. She was staring at me like I was a crazy person. But after I explained (and demonstrated) the correct way, she started laughing as well. Just goes to show what awesome bridesmaids I have. My MOH stayed up until the wee hours of the morning, doing something she hated, just because she knew I would appreciate such a small detail.

How about you? Have you encountered any funny stories like this along the planning path?

How DO you use wax seals? I am ignorant of their majesty.

AWW!!
That is soo sweet! Nothin better than real life love.
I love those funny stories of incredibly sweet things that while, not exactly movie material, mean such much in real life. My fiance told me the other day that a chinese food, indy racing, and me had made his bad day better… and it was sucha real life love moment, I couldn’t wait to marry him.

I have a monogram was seal… it’s very easy to use. I use the use the petroleum based stuff that looks and feels like genuine wax but it will not crack or break like traditional wax and it fits into a standard glue gun and doesn’t smell. With the traditional wax sticks, you have to light the wick and wait for wax to melt off and drop onto the paper. As soon as a little puddle forms, you stamp it. That’s the best way I can describe it :)

that is too funny and cute! I also wanted to take a stab at wax seals but my coworker warned me otherwise. I wonder if he was using the “handle” as well!

Great story! I’m curious– what initial did she use– your 1st name? Last name? Last name-to-be?

My MOH bought cute invites for my bachelorette that looked like lingerie. The one on the front of the package had a black satin bow on it and she thought they would all be that way. Once she got them open, she found only the front one had the finished bow and there were just pieces of ribbon in the package. She struggled for quite a while to tie bows with these little 2 or 3 inch pieces of ribbon. Her boyfriend came home, picked one up and tied a perfect bow on the first try. Needless to say he finished the rest of them!

@Miss Cherry Pie: and @Miss Pomegranate: @McG: explained it perfectly. It’s how they sealed their letters in the olden days
@Miss Pineapple: haha, maybe I need to do a tutorial post. I really don’t think its too difficult :)
@Anne Sheffer: She didn’t use my initial- she actually used the hearts symbol shown in the second picture with white wax
@Leslie: It’s so funny how difficult we can make things on ourselves- but I guess we just need fresh eyes sometimes to help us figure stuff out :)

I love wax seals, too, despite an incident I had the first time I used them! Somehow or another I ended up getting a drop of wax on my hand and still have a scar to this day to show for it. People always assume it is a cigarette burn until I explain the true story (and I don’t even smoke!) Ah, the things we endure for pretty paper products! :)

I didn’t realize how difficult it would be to get red ribbon for my programs… from walmart… at christmas time…

It took more than 7 walmarts (across 3 cities) before we could find enough ribbon!!

We both definitely wanted to have wax seals on everything. The invitations, place cards, favor boxes and even on the thank you cards. Since we had to mail most of them, surviving the postal service was critical.
So we asked for samples to be mailed (on the outside of an envelope) to us from a few suppliers and the best shape we received was from waxent.com.
They have some cute designs, too bad they didn’t have their 3-D effect Deux Coeurs in their small size.
After all they turned out really nice, everyone got their mail intact and we got a lot of positive feedback.
