Kiddie Activity Boxes

July 21st, 2008 @ 3:18 pm by Mrs. Toucan

Knowing that we were planning on having kids at our wedding, I decided to make little activity kits to keep them out of trouble. I bought these colorful lunch box looking plastic cases for $2 each at Michaels:

Then, I filled it up with kiddie goodies:
I bought the boxes of crayons on sale last August/September (Mr. Toucan thought I was crazy) during the annual Back-to-School sale at Target. Each box of crayons only cost me 10 cents! I bought cute little foam sunglasses from Michaels (on sale, 50 cents), and packages of play-dough ($1 for pack of 6, or 17 cents per tub). Then, I printed out coloring sheets on normal computer paper and stapled them together to make a little booklet, and VOILA! A kiddie activity box for less than $3!What have been your best (or cheapest!) children’s gift finds?

I was just thinking to myself today that I should make goody bags… this is an even better idea, goody bags would just fatten them up with sweets, but this will keep them entertained, I hope…thanks!

I gave bags with play cars (the girls like them more than the boys!) Crayons and coloring book, Mr. Potato head, a slinky, and a stuffed animal. Do you know what they liked the best? THE SLINKY!

Such a fantastic idea … some bridal magazine suggested buying crayons for TEN DOLLARS a package - just for crayons! I love your idea - totally cute and budget-conscious.

We did the coloring book and crayons for the little ones and then added toy cars and yo-yos for the boys and princess wands and braclets for the girls (all from the $1 bin at Target). The girls loved playing princess for the day, and I loved playing Queen!!

I dont think we’re having many kids at the wedding but I’d probably load em up full of sugar. Hey Kids! Here’s a bag of Pop Rocks! Go wild!

We’ve just been informed that FI’s uncle is bringing his two pre-teen daughters (they weren’t invited and no other kids will be at the wedding) so now I need to come up with something for them.

This looks like a great idea!

Spectacular idea! I plan to do something similar with beach toys.

I was at Target yesterday and noticed the back-to-school stuff is out. By the end of August/early September, it will all be on clearance :)

I found some neat stuff at Five Below– there aren’t a ton of them yet but it is basically an upscale dollar store aimed towards kids/teens and everything is under $5. They have TONS of stuff, cute totes, board games and many other cute odds and ends that are sure to be loved! I got interactive books by Cranium that have games and such in them for $4!

That is a very cute box for the kids. I know they will love it. I like the little book you made them.

That’s so thoughtful! But aren’t you afraid they’ll start scribbling on everything in sight with the crayons (like the nice table linens)?

Mrs. Toucan says:

@Marlene and MissDragonfly: I’m already married - I just didn’t have time to post this before the wedding.
@Marlene: The kids did love them, though I think they seemed to like the box better than the contents of the box!
@MissDragonfly: Nope. There wasn’t any crayon anywhere. It’s harder for them to draw on linens with crayon (why I didn’t give them markers), and it’s why I also gave them coloring pages - so they wouldn’t draw on other things. I left a few blank pages as well for free drawing.
