Adventures in Crinoline Dyeing

July 22nd, 2008 @ 12:31 pm by Mrs. Avocado

When I discovered the concept of dyed crinolines I hoped that at least one of my many friends getting married this summer would dye hers! Mrs. Strawberry talked about it, and Mrs. Poppy was even brave enough to do it and wear it under her dress. The concept is so popular, there seems to be an official Knottie bio on the subject. My old roommate happened to be the perfect person to try this out with and so we adventurously purchased a crinoline off of eBay.

1

It took a few trips to Wal-Mart, but Amber finally discovered that the RIT dye is stocked next to the laundry detergent. I guess that makes sense. She was seeking a raspberry shade and so she bought the Wine colored dye.

2

First we had to make sure the crinoline fit. There was a small emergency at the beginning when we lost the string to tie it with (it disappeared into the skirt).

3

My crafty sister saved the day by looping the string back through with a safety pin. I don’t totally understand how this works but she is brilliant like that.

4

We then followed the instructions on the back of the bottle. We ran hot water in the washer, and did not add salt (the instructions are kind of unclear about this). After the washer was full of hot water we added the entire bottle of dye. Then we let the agitator mix the color around.

5

The instructions said we shouldn’t put dry fabric in the washer so we put the crinoline in the shower first to get it wet.

6

It was a monster effort to stuff that huge crinoline into our tiny washer. Poor Amber burned her hands a few times (the water has to be as hot as possible), but I think it was worth it in the end.

7

We pushed it down as far as it would go, and tried to spread it out around the middle of the washer. I opened the lid every 10 or 15 minutes to rearrange the crinoline so that the dye reached all parts of it. After all of the water had drained out of the washer and it had run on the spin cycle for a few minutes, we opened the lid to find this!

8

We rinsed it out with warm/hot water until the water ran as clear as possible.

9

The finished product hung to dry in my shower. I had to do a lot of scrubbing after she left, so if you attempt this, remember that as the crinoline dries it will drip colored water all over the place. I ran the washer 3 or 4 times with bleach (although that was probably overdoing it). I threw some white towels in to make sure that no residue was going to turn my panties pink the next time I washed my whites.

Amber just emailed me her bridals, so I was able to see how the crinoline looks underneath her dress. Doesn’t she look beautiful? She said her photographer absolutely LOVED shooting the colored crinoline.

I think her sweet little ballet slippers add just the right touch. I’ll be attending Amber’s wedding in August and will be able to see the dress in action at her reception!

Anyone else out there wearing a colored crinoline?

So cute - I love the splash of color! It’s great that you were able to get the dye evenly spread out in the washer - especially since crinolines are so poofy!

I love her dress too! I’m assuming she has the same modesty requirements you have, right? It’s suuuuuper pretty! And yeah, the crin looks gorgeous! Wow…I wish I was brave enough (and had the space — living in an apt) to do something like that :)

WOWZAS! Love it! Are you dying yours?

But I must say Avacado you are a bad, bad influence! You have got me thinking about crinoline dying…and I just might have to consider!

great to see the dying in action!

did it stain the tub in your washer? or did the bleach afterward take care of it?

She looks beautiful! I wanted so badly to dye my petticoat (crinoline is actually a stiffened underlayer - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crinoline or my post about “what to wear under there)….but it’s way to big to put into my washer. :p Serves me right for buying a petticoat named ‘mega huge’ :)

Hi there! This is in regards to one of your earlier posts; but I’m posting here in case you see it faster :-). I wondering if you could repost your Venue worksheet? I (and it looks like someone else too) tried downloading it but it doesn’t seem to be working. Thank you so much - excited to see it!

I’m using RIT Dye in Aquamarine :) It was im-flippin’-possible to find that color in stores, so I had to buy it off the RIT website (which has a few good tips). It’s supposed to come in the mail tomorrow - can’t wait:)

What a great shock of color under that bright white dress! It looks like you all had a lot of fun doing it, too.

Darn it, now I want one too! I’m getting married in 3.5 weeks and at some point I have to stop looking at cool ideas on this site. I’m running out of DIY time people!!! (but this idea, pretty awesome..)

That dress is AWESOME. I’m really looking for a dress with more coverage, like this one has. Would you mind telling me where you found it?

I looked at your friend’s wedding dress and thought, “Gee, she must be Mormon.” Checked your profile, and yup! Lol.

Thank you for documenting the process!

@StefM: Yep, same modesty guidelines. I attended BYU, so most of my friends are LDS like I am.
@Miss Cookie: I don’t have a dress poufy enough that it would work. I would love to undergo some type of “goldifying” process to make mine all gold and sparkly though!
@Miss Pineapple: The tub and the washer were both fine. I would run the washer with at least two cycles of hot water and bleach, and make sure that you do some scrubbing by hand to get the dye residue off when doing so. The tub was definitely a little more work to clean, but only because I forgot to scrub at it for a few hours.
@Aut:
She found her slippers here

@Shawn: No bleeding whatsoever, and she did her bridal shoot in the middle of July in the hot sun so I think you should be okay.
@Neffbot: She lives in Provo, Utah and so she was able to visit a store there that rents out mix and match tops and bottoms (yes that isn’t once complete dress!). It’s great because she was able to choose a skirt and a shirt that worked for her. I’m sorry I don’t think they have a website, it’s a locally run place. I might write up a post about dresses that offer a little more coverage because of your post though!
