Rehearsal Dinner

July 22nd, 2008 @ 1:25 pm by Mrs. Pineapple

When Mr. Pineapple and I started dating, we both lived in Pittsburgh’s Southside neighborhood. The Southside is an extremely quirky place, popular among hipsters and bar flies. The Southside was first developed in the 1760s when it was known as Birmingham. Most of the buildings on the main drag, E. Carson Street, have their original facades thanks to local historical groups.

The very first place Mr. P and I went together, other than work, was Smokin’ Joe’s Saloon on the Southside. We met there for happy hour on a Thursday and then pretty much every day after that. (I’m not kidding, Smokin’ Joes got at least 6 months worth of our paychecks.) Yep, our relationship blossomed surrounded by IPA and chicken fingers. We were both sad to leave the neighborhood several months later, but at the time, it was for the best.

There was no doubt then where our rehearsal dinner should be held. We are familiar faces at Joe’s and they offered to let us take over the second floor for the dinner. They certainly have nothing fancy at Joe’s, just bar food and over 60 beers on tap. Most of my family are not drinkers, I am not sure when the last time my folks stepped foot in a bar would have been- if either of them have ever been in bar at all. However, their “sweet and smoky” dipping and wing sauce is to die for and that is really what keeps bringing me back.

Since the dinner is upstairs I think it will be a great combination of laid-backness (*new word) and seclusion from the “bar scene” below. After food and toasts people can either head home to their hotels or hang out until closing time.

Is anyone else dragging their fancy bridal party to a dive for the rehearsal dinner?

*funny side note: I Googled “Smokin’ Joe’s Pittsburgh” and a good chunk the images were of Mr. Pineapple, myself and our best man Erik.

Uhm, that sounds FANTABULOUS!

Sadly, my old stomping grounds of a dive bar is not exactly rehearsal dinner material (at all). The last few times I’ve gone, the stench of puke hit my nostrils as soon as I walked in the front door.

I highly recommend something like this. Our rehearsal dinner was held at a local BBQ pit. The food was fabulous. It was buffet style which was great since we had some big boy stomachs to fill. Everyone had a great time. My husband especially appreciated that it wasn’t all that fancy.

Oh yeah. Ours is at a local sports bar famous for their burgers and wings! All dressed up and eating wings and drinking beer - wonderful!

That is SO awesome that the pics are of you guys. Meant to be! And 60 bars on tap doesn’t sound like a dive - that just sounds heavenly!

We’re doing ours at a local restaurant called Maxie’s that has two locations - one in Ithaca (where Mr.GV and I live, and where the wedding is), and one in Milwaukee (where my family is from, and where most of the guests are coming from - hence the 60 beers on tap sounding heavenly to me!)… isn’t that weird?

What a treat to see pictures of the Southside in my reader!
Sooo many great places on E. Carson, we’ll be holding our rehersal dinner down there as well!

With Pittsburgh being a “drinking town with a football problem”, I’m sure you’d find a rehersal dinner at bars more often than not!

Sweet! My mom grew up at 19th and Carson, so I know exactly where Smokin’ Joes is! My favorite dive on the South Side is Jacks.

I think that is a great idea, especially if your wedding will be more formal. Ours is definitely in a dive bar; the uspide is the 4 pool tables, 3 dart boarda and 7 arcade games that the area we blocked of offers. They will also do an awesome buffet for a really reasonable rate. My hubs-to-be really wanted a laid-back wedding, so I am giving him his vision as the welcome party/RD. We are spicing it up a bit by hiring a bluegrass band (also what he wanted at a wedding), adding linen checkered tablecloths to all of the tables and bringing in sunflower centerpieces.
