The Toucans Go On Honeymoon, Part 4

—————————————————————-
Remember that cute little Anthropologie dress I wore to the airport when I got into my pre-honeymoon scuffle with the law? Well, after wearing it on the long plane ride over to Italy, I discovered that it was quite comfortable for traveling. It was empire-waisted (and had an elastic back to boot!), and nothing was restricted. I determined that it was an excellent dress to wear on the way to Rome. However, I’ve discovered that said cute Anthropologie dress equaled bad luck for travel. No, I didn’t break any Italian laws (luckily), but the day we left for Rome, the rail workers decided to go on strike. Every now and then, they would cancel a train. And guess what? They canceled our train- 5 minutes before we were supposed to be boarding it!

So what now? We asked the guy at the information desk, who tells us we can use our tickets on the next train to Rome. We then were informed by one of the ticket checkers on said next train that there was no way we could get on the train because it was full.

Humph. What to do? Stowaway. We decided just to get on the train anyway- so what if we had to stand? At least we’d get to Rome. And we did.

Rome was by far my favorite city on the trip. There was just so much to see and do!

The Ruins of Rome:

The Colosseum (Note the phone-thingy I have to my ear. Instead of doing group tours, we usually opted for this route. This way we could go at our own pace, and not have to stand around massive amounts of people all the time)

The Roman Forums

Domus Aurea (Nero’s Golden Palace)

Domus Aurea is actually really cool. Emperor Nero built had it built for himself, however never really lived in it (if at all) because he died shortly after its completion. Instead of occupying the palace, the next owner decided to fill it with dirt and build on top of it! They are still excavating the palace today! The palace is huge, but only a few rooms are currently opened. Tours are very limited (we had a larger group of 10 people!), and very short (only about 30 minutes!). But the coolest part of the tour? They made us wear hard hats.

Very dark picture because we weren’t allowed to use the flash.

The Vatican:

St. Peter’s from afar

In front of St. Peter’s Basilica

Rafael’s “School of Athens” inside the Vatican Museum

There are A LOT of people that go to the Vatican

I made Mr. Toucan be a good Catholic boy and get holy water inside St. Peter’s

Michelangelo’s “Pieta” inside St. Peter’s

On the St. Angelo Bridge with Castle St. Angelo behind (okay, not part of the Vatican, but close by!)

And around Rome:

The Spanish Steps

The Pantheon

Unfortunately, some of the sites were closed. Note how sad Mrs. Toucan looks in front of the Fountain of the Four Rivers

And lastly, Trevi Fountain

We couldn’t leave the fountain without ensuring a future trip to Rome…

So, here’s to hoping we get to go back!!!

I love love love that Anthropologie dress. I looked on their website but they don’t have it. By any chance do you know the name of the style? I would LOVE to hunt it down.

Awesome pictures!! My Fiance and I will be spending 3 days in Rome before going on a 10 day Eastern Mediterranean cruise.

Did you guys go through any tour companies or did you explore on your own? I’m thinking of joining a tour for the Vatican and the Colosseum and then doing the hop-on hop-off tour bus. Do you have any tips or suggestions for us? :)

I love the Trevi fountain. I just think it is so beautiful.

Great recap. My hubby and I both went to Italy in high school so we decided against it for a honeymoon, but I REALLY want to go in the next few years. Your trip makes me want to start planning now! ;)

@Deb: Honestly, I’d just do the research and go exploring on your own. The entire time we were in Italy (all cities included), we only did one group tour (the Vatican). While it wasn’t terrible, most group tours are fairly large (say 30 people or so). Personally, I’d rather get reservations for the sites early (you can do this now for the Vatican and Colosseum/Roman Forums). When you get there you can buy and audio guide and still hear the interesting facts. I prefer this way for 2 reasons: 1. you can go at your own pace and do what you want, and 2. it takes a LONG time to get the big tour groups together. On our Vatican tour (again, the only tour we took), it took us almost an HOUR to get the whole group through the door, though security, and set up with head phones (so you can hear the guide). Additionally, while I’m not 100% positive on this, it seems that if you go on your own it might be a little less crowded. For the most part, all tour companies seem to start their tours at the same time. When we went to the Colosseum, we didn’t book a tour but made reservations for tickets ahead of time. Since we started early, we bypassed all of the people waiting for their tours to start.

As for the bus, I don’t have any experiences with it. I’ve heard it avoid the buses though, because sometimes they will make you stop at places to buy stuff… again, I have no experience with this.

I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, do feel free to email me at: toucan at weddingbee dot com! :)

Great recap! We leave for our Italian honeymoon in a month, and your photos and stories are getting me pumped up! Do you know how we can get reservations early for the Vatican/Colosseum to bypass the line (without doing group tours)? Also, do you have any recommendations for restaurants in any of the cities you visited? Thanks so much!

@Laura: We used Rome Museum to book tickets/tours in Rome. For Domus Aurea, we used Select Italy to book tickets. Select Italy, I think, is US-based, but I think is a bit more expensive.

I’m still trying to find all my business cards from the restaurants we ate at so I can put together a yummy post! What cities are you visiting?

@MissEsq: Sorry, I’m so late responding… I had to wait to go home and look at the dress again, and then I totally forgot to respond! I bought the dress at Anthropologie, but the maker of the dress is Free People.

I’ve never seen it online. I bought the dress, literally, the day before our wedding! When I bought it they said it was brand new, and they had just gotten them in (this would be early June). I hope this helps! Good luck tracking it down! :)

Thanks so much for the info. We start out in Bellagio, then Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre and Rome…almost the same as you. The dining selection in Italy is overwhelming, so if any restaurants come to mind, please share!
