About Mrs. Peacock

Three for One Tuxedos (Dot Com)

July 23rd, 2008 @ 10:28 am by Mrs. Peacock

Mr. Peacock decided early into our engagement that he wanted to buy himself a tuxedo. It was a bit surprising to me as he and I rarely go to black tie events, but he said that even if he only wore it to the wedding, he wanted it to be his own. I think he had romantic ideas of pulling the tux out of his closet decades from now and one day wearing it to our children’s weddings. Cute, right?

We decided to go very traditional with the guys look- bow ties, no vests. I think this is so sexy and romantic- but it might just be that I am also a sucker for Cary Grant.

I think that I found this picture on the Knot, but it has been in my files for so long that I can’t remember! Please let me know if you know! :)

Based on our research, tuxes are a lot like wedding gowns. You can really go to town with the high end designers and fabrics, you can find a middle ground at a department store, or you can find yourself a great deal at a warehouse store. We started with the warehouse stores. We were happily surprised at what we found at Mr. Peacock’s favorite place for inexpensive suits- Cosmo’s Designer Direct. Their tag line is “3 for 1 suits” (dot com). They also offer three for one shirts, socks and shoes. Included in their suit selection were a variety of tuxedos at different price points. We found a very nice, traditional tux for $299 (the lowest price point)- which broke down to 3 tuxes at $100 a piece.

Mr. Peacock had been part of several tuxedo rentals gone wrong and thought it might not be so crazy to offer this as an option to his bridal party. He did a little research and found a place that would sell him a tux shirt, bow tie, cummerbund, studs and cuff links for $100. The guys could either rent their tux for $150 or buy it for $200. It worked out perfectly. A few already owned tuxedos, and no one was asking them to rent just to match the other dudes. Out of the seven guys remaining, five decided to buy, which led to a fun trip to Cosmo’s on a Sunday morning for fittings. My Grampy wanted a new black suit, which kept us at a multiple of three. The two that wanted to rent just coordinated it on their own, therefore lessening the chance of a huge mess-up due to the confusions of a group order. The purchased tuxes came in a week later with no problems whatsoever. I cannot wait to see the guys in their nicely tailored suits that morning- hubba hubba!

Has anyone else gone this route? Did any grooms choose to buy rather than rent?

Sounds like a good deal to me! Mr. PN is buying his entire outfit including kilt, jacket, shirt, shoes and accessories. He also bought the custom kilts for his groomsman, but they will rent the jacket, shoes, etc.

My fiance decided to have a suit guy he knew make everyone in his party suits. We went with basic black and just asked the guys for $50 and we picked up the rest - about $75 each - everyone loves them and now has a nice black suit they can wear again and again! I would absolutely recommend this if it’s an option.

My FI would like to buy as well (also a surprise for me since we’re not black tie people). I’m a little worred about him not matching the groomsmen that decide to rent. Has anyone else had this problem?

Oooh, I am drooling over your Cary Grant reference! :)

We had to change our tuxedo option (we picked it out before the bridesmaid dresses and ended up going with chocolate - almost black - BM dresses instead of red as planned).

Hubby was bummed about another trip to the tuxedo shop.

The FI just bought his suit yesterday at J.Crew–he really needs a well-tailored one as he will be soon going out on job interviews (oh to be a PhD student…). A nice bonus–he got it 15% off with free shipping because he bought it in-store off of their special red phone!

Yes, we’re both pretty understated, but we’re going for a JFK Jr./Carolyn Bessette aesthetic–simple clean lines with a few extra flourishes (linen pocket square, self-designed bridal suite of jewelry) to add a little extra oomph.

this is funny and helpful when trying to decide if you should buy or rent a tux

We bought suits. My fiance got a nice one, well, they’re all nice, and then we got all the rest of the groomsmen $600 suits for 175 average. We’re pretty pumped.. the guys are actually spending less to own a suit than they would have to rent a tux, so yey!

Thanks for the heads up on Mrs.Hoya. I have definitely looked through that bio before and enjoyed it thoroughly. She was one classy bride!

@Sarah: We aren’t worried about it. Everyone’s tux is the same basic style and color, so they will be similar enough for us. If you are buying/renting matching ties, vests, etc., I think that the accessories will more attention than the tux itself. Thats just my opinion, though!
