About Miss Sweet Tea

Another Day, Another Palette

July 24th, 2008 @ 10:00 pm by Miss Sweet Tea

I’m a terrible liar, dear readers. I show you pictures of gorgeous Dutch painting-inspired tulips and bright colors, only to snatch them away and go in a completely different direction. I did, however, make the disclaimer that the last board contained my initial inspiration, and that I made it just after getting engaged in December.

Basically, I described to Mr. Sweet Tea my love for Art Deco, peacock motifs, jewel tones and brights, and a funny thing happened. As I was describing it, it sounded like way more than I wanted, and Mr. Sweet Tea likewise was not feeling the love for the color scheme either. We talked about trying to make it work for a while, with more and more disagreements (I loved the blues and greens, hated purples; he wanted nothing to do with green, etc.) Then, I kind of just blurted out: “Well, what about black and white, with red accents?”

And a new color scheme, and inspiration board, were born:

Again, I had *no idea* that black and white would be so popular this year! It is nice to see other damask brides like Ms. Pomegranate around the hive for inspiration, though, that is for sure!

This color combo works so well for us because it is much more simple, streamlined, and classic- all the things we want in life (and especially in the crazy flurry of wedding planning!). It still works with that vintage aesthetic we are going for, and I’ll still be able to add in some pops of color in key places to bring out that Art Deco look (you’ll see my surprises soon!)

Plus, as some of you duly noted, those vibrant colored tulips and such are much harder to come by in December. Being a budget-y kind of bee, and trying to limit the cost and environmental waste of shipping in flowers that are out of season, it’s much easier to go with a palette of beautiful reds and white, like anemones, ranunculus, stephanotis, etc.

I made this board a good bit after some major decisions and purchases were made- so count this as your sneak peak of some of my attire, engagement photos, and even ceremony venue!

Does the new board suit your fancy? Any other folks planning black, white, and red weddings out there?

Totally budget friendly (at least I would think so) red idea for December flowers - poinsettia!

i am having trouble finding BM dresses in the right color red, though. everything seems too fire engine. i wanted something a little darker.

Aw, I *love* that engagement photo, with your red coat!!! And the color palette should be stunning. (Love the poinsettia idea, too…)

That’s the great thing about the planning process — our ideas evolve and are fine tuned. It’s what makes it fun and exciting. One day you want a garden wedding, the next you’re all about that Miami vibe, and from there you settle down on a Gatsby themed soiree.

I love your ideas! Can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store.

I’m a black/white red accent bride too!!! It is super popular this year :-) I’m making black/white damask table runners and having red roses for the centerpieces and our bouquets! Our wedding is October 4…so I don’t have too much more time to plan all of my little touches!!!

I am doing black and white and red for my wedding. I was originally going to do plum and gold, but it was juat too hard to match. Black, white, and red is SO much easier!

i was in a black and white wedding in 2005, and it was so timeless and beautiful. bridesmaids wore halters that were white, black organza skirts, a black ribbon around their waists, and we all carried bright red flowers. i’m excited for all the great graphic prints and cool stripes (or damask) that are black-and-white these days.

so this is also another precious palette. :)
