Hanging It All On A (Photo) Line

July 24th, 2008 @ 11:55 am by Mrs. Cherry Pie

See that photo? Yeah, that’s from a very nice Style Me Pretty real wedding. I just want to eat up their whole rustic-y ambiance, but this picture in particular is taaaaaasty.

Why? Because it’s such a great idea and I hadn’t thought of anything like it. So, naturally, I’m gonna make one of my very own!

Before I discovered this photo line, I was originally inspired by these photo-displays in vintage window frames created by Knottie bkbistro:

But after thinking about what it would take to make them, and how much space they’d take up in the car, I scratched the idea. We already have way too much breakable DIY decor to schlep across state lines. This new project is much more compact and transportable while being similarly rustic.

On top of that, it’s as easy as 1-2-3! All you need is:

1. Jute twine (or string):

2. Teeny tiny clothespins (we’re using natural, not colored):

3. A stack o’ photos (which I have yet to compile):

Et voila! You’re ready to go!

I take a lot of pictures. (You may have noticed.) But what you’ve seen is really just the tip of the iceberg. I’m one of many people I know who owns a digital SLR camera (specifically a Canon 20D), and that makes me the official family photojournalist. As a result, I’ve accrued thousands and thousands of photos of family and friends around the world. And the travesty is that although I display them online, I never print or display any of my best photos!

This will give me a chance to show off some fun pictures of people and some historical photos of our time in Glacier. I’ve also invited our family and friends to contribute their digital and print pictures to the line. I’m considering allowing our guests to “claim” any photo that doesn’t belong to someone by writing their name on the back and taking it home at the end of the night.

For our wedding, a photo-line will look less contrived than a collage or poster board, and create less of a bottleneck than a photo album. I think it’s also more likely to be seen where we’re putting it- on the fence behind the saloon and stage’s soft seating and in the “grotto” under the sound booth:

Are you displaying personal or family photos at your wedding? If so, how?

Yup - I have asked guests to send me scans of their wedding pictures. I will combine these with the wedding pictures of relatives who have passed away.

Ooh I like the idea of allowing people to claim it–I saw the same picture and wanted to do the same but we’re going with a slideshow instead–but we’re still asking people to contribute photos so we can have a pic of everyone at the reception!

Loving this idea. Plus how fab are you to have a wedding where there is both a saloon and a grotto?

I bought a vintage french door and then old vintage windows at a recycling yard. I am putting pictures of us together and matting them behind the glass in the door, and then a friend is doing a welcome sign out of barn board to hang on the doorknob. Then I have taken all the wedding pictures in our families- great grandparents, siblings, and put them in the old window frames, which will hinge together and sit on our guest book table. So, I too have no problem taking ideas and making them my own! Love the closepin line idea!

OOhhh.. Hot Cocoa - I love your icon.

And Miss CP - this is a fabulous idea! I love that you have enough photos to pull it off. If you don’t - you could start taking them at showers and other wedding events…

This is such a neat idea… my fiancee’s parents threw a backyard party for us recently, an engagement party of sorts, and used their clothesline in the yard not only to hang old photos of us growing up, but also old clothes of ours! It was really fun to see a picture of 5-year-old me and pinned up next to it, the same dress I was wearing in the picture! Other items included little baseball gloves and shrimp league basketball jerseys, my first swimming suit, and a report card all the way back to first grade… the guests spent hours reminiscing with us and laughing at our similar bowl haircuts! Great fun.

We’re displaying wedding pictures of our parents and grandparents with one of our engagement photos, as kind of a ‘family tree’. I got some great frames on sale at IKEA, so the total for this project was around $30! I think this is a nice way to pay homage to those family members who have passed, and also to celebrate the joy of matrimony!

Love this! It was also on my list to do but we never got to it. Just an FYI about the tiny wood clothes pins, they don’t really hold well against a breeze. You can do a couple of things…get bigger clothes pins, or attach some sort of flap to the back of your pictures so that you can attach the picture and the flap to the clothes line. Kind-of like what we did for our hanging escort card envelopes.

Yup! We did this exact same thing- except I ended up using wide, colored ribbon. We also did something similar with the escort cards by hanging them with clothespins from rafia.

It’s a bit of a closeup pic, but you get the idea: http://foreverplatinum.com/blog/bachorzblog/bachorz_blog04

I considered this to line the long, long driveway up to the site (that would be after the Tibetan prayer flag idea, and before the ribbon canopy idea, none of which I actually used). That way no one had to feel bad if they were walking super slowly and/or having to take breaks along the way.

In general, I support all ideas that acknowledge the fact that this wedding doesn’t exist in a vacuum: there have been weddings and special events in both families for hundreds of years, so let’s celebrate those, too! Happiness for all!

Great idea CP. I was thinking of doing this with our escort cards and then as each guest came, having a polaroid taken of them, and switching the escort card for the picture… we’ll see if I can actually pull that off though ;)

I had an idea to do something similar, where when the guests arrive to take their escort card they find a picture of either me or my fiance with them or both of us with them in the picture. I am not sure if I can pull this off, since some of our parents friends would not have pictures with us, so I may just steal your idea! thanks! :)

we did pretty much the same thing, but with ribbon instead of twine. In set-up of my bio:

People thought it was so cute.
