In Case of Emergency : wedding denver diet P101005

Sssshhhh! Please don’t tell Mr. Cookie, but I have a super secret stash of cookies in my office that are to be used only in case of emergency. Although they have been pulled out more often for situations not even close to life threatening, I find comfort in their sweet goodness.

I don’t know about you, but when I get stressed out, I eat junk food! It’s just soooo tempting. I can’t control myself sometimes, and then I totally turn into Cookie Monster. “ME WANT COOKIE!” Yuuummm, Yuummm!

Ok, now I am back!

This awful habit didn’t just come on because of the wedding, but has definitely come out of hibernation as planning has progressed. I try to eat healthy: fruits, veggies, protein, and complex carbohydrates, but sometimes the easiest solution is cookie dough for dinner. It’s not like I want to be rail thin for the wedding, but I definitely want to be healthy! I’ve tried to get back into working out three days a week and eating healthy, but I keep falling off the wagon!

So, to all my fellow stress eaters out in the hive, how have you kept your cookie monster in control during the wedding planning process?

I joined weight watchers (on line) a few months before we got engaged. Being forced to actually track what I ate (and I try to be honest) is a great way of staying on board. There have been times when I have gone crazy, and you just shake it off the next day and try to get back into good eating habits! Don’t feel guilty about it - just enjoy your moment of weakness, then move on to the next meal!

I have to work (hard!) on balancing eating well and working out. I’m pretty good at the former, but can only do the latter in the morning before work, which means waking up at 5 a.m. — and that’s TOUGH!

Motivating me is Mr. MagPie, who knows I really need the early morning workout sessions to destress. And, there’s the annoying guy who scans my card at the gym, and chides me when I’ve been away for awhile (sometimes I get into a routine of getting up and going just so I don’t have to hear his one-liner about me starting up my efforts…again [ugh!]).

I went to the gym religiously all year while my fiancee was in Iraq. Then, 5 months before the wedding, when he came home, we because too busy to work out regularly and he craved all of the food he missed while he was gone (pizza and Big Macs). I gained 15 pounds in a month. Then, few weeks ago (3 months to go), we went and tried on my dress, a sleek lacy number. The dress that looked perfect on my gym body didn’t work on this body. So now I’m dieting for the first time in my life. My saving grace? Pistachios. I need the protein to keep me from getting too shaky from hunger. I keep a bag on my desk, and grab one or two whenever I need more than salad.

In general, I avoid the cookie monster by not buying anything that I might binge on if I am hungry and don’t have time for a meal. No chips, no cookies, no chocolate/candy. I go to the grocery store after a meal so I’m not tempted when I shop and generally make all my own meals, so I don’t end up just grabbing something. I keep things like boiled eggs and bagged salad greens around in case I need something quick. Sometimes the cookie monster appears anyway, and that means I am eating a bunch of pretzels or grapes absent-mindedly but that’s a lot better than chips or cookies anyway.

i have been obsessing over drinking enough water…which occupies most of my time, but i pretty much follow the route of “katze” if i don’t buy it i don’t eat it. my cabinets are pretty much junk food free right now…which drives FI pretty crazy.

I both hate them and love them, but the 100 calorie packs of cookies (and the new Entemans and Tastykake 100 calorie cupcakes and such) are my saving grace. They still satisfy my sweet tooth and because to get more you have to open a whole new package, I keep myself to just 1. My personal favorite are the Trader Joe’s oatmeal chocolate chip ones - the oatmeal makes them just that little bit more filling.

@Haley:

Oh my goodness! This happened to me too haley. Except for the Iraq part. I got into a car accident about a week after I bought my dress, I was laid up and at the mercy of my fiance to bring me home food since I couldn’t get to the grocery store (i.e. “I bought you your favorite brownies with that ben & jerrys half baked ice cream you love!” That’s nice… but I haven’t eaten dinner “Oh yeah, I didn’t think about that… well let’s order some of that extra greasy pizza you love!”) He was awesome, but my waistline didn’t love it so much. Plus I stopped going to the gym because it was hell on my back… a couple months ago fully recovered I went to pick up my dress feeling pretty confident that everything was under control… It won’t zip up :(. So, after a couple of months of stressful and maddening dieting along with all the planning stress, I’ve finally concluded that it’s worth an extra couple hundred to get the dress let out… and how cool would it be in ten years to renew our vows and have to get the thing taken in!

@chocopie: Umm, chocopie, these days your namesake is my downfall. I definitely went across the street at 11 pm last night for one. Yummy.

Anyway, my problem is that I’m not just a stress-eater, but also a bored-eater, a happy-eater, sad-eater, etc. etc. I’m trying to eat more fish and snack on nuts, and cut back on soda and lattes, but it’s hard!

I am a sugaraholic! I’ve fallen off the “no sweet train” so many times that I’ve come to the conclusion it just ain’t happening. So I’ve stepped up on the workout schedule. Since January I’ve lost 15 lbs on my 5′1 frame and though I’m still not where I want to be I’m close enough to eat some goodness and enjoy this time!

well….i’d lost 30lbs last year and managed to maintain thru the holidays. i thought i was home free.

then i got engaged, and the wedding stress combined with a hectic schedule that didnt allow much excercise time got the best of me…..i quickly put on nearly 20lbs!

horror! so i went to the doctor and now i’m on a supervised plan that should get me back where i was, if not smaller before i need to get my dress altered.

stressful. but the thoughts of myself in my dress puffed up like a puffer fish helps me say ‘No’ more than ‘Yes’ lately.

I find that if I don’t get started with even a bite of the junk, then I don’t progress to binging. The key for me is working out and having healthy snack options available. I also don’t eat much at work so I can come home and have a healthy meal with my honey.

I totally envy that boy metabolism… or even 26 year old girl metabolism for that matter!

I started an amped up workout regimen a couple of months ago. Now when I feel like having junk food I think to myself that it will just undo the good I did for my body at the gym that day, and it doesn’t seem worth it. Did you know that your body needs a deficiency of 3500 calories to lose one pound? That’s a lot of hours on the elliptical making up for a couple of burritos. No thanks. I cut pretty much all fast food out of my life a couple of years ago, and never drink soda - not even diet. Want a delicious, fast, healthy meal that you can stash in your office freezer? Amy’s Vegetable Lasagna. Soooooo good, and only 350 calories. Way better for you than that 1500 plus Big Mac meal at McDonalds!

I can’t keep my cookie monster in control. Therefore, we do not have cookies in the house. Otherwise, it’s like I’m a werewolf and it’s suddenly a full moon!

My stash at work is a big bag of assorted mints and hard candies from the bulk section at the grocery store. They keep the 3pm cookie monster at bay pretty well! What’s keeping me from Starbucks right now is the “well, would I rather spend $25 a week at Starbucks, or put $25 a week into our wedding savings?” debate. It’s NOT a hard decision!

My big problem is that my honey can eat and eat and eat and not put on an ounce, so if he’s making dinner, I have to be careful about my serving sizes.

Ladies and Groomzilla — you have inspired me!

As of today the cookies went into the garbage * ouch that really hurt * Besides the fabulous Cold Stone Ice Cream in our fridge, a cookies gotta have a little something once and a while, I am throwing out all our junk food! It’s just too tempting! I want to bee healthy, not just for the wedding, but for me!

@CarolineG: Sounds yummy

@lunapark: When I lived in DC, I used to love Trader Joe’s and Entemans are the bomb. But us land-locked folks don’t have Trader Joe’s or Entemans in our neck of the woods…Boo

@marianneinvan: Starbucks is deadly. We have a line item in our budget just for my coffee consumption. I limit myself to one Starbucks a week –sometimes that happens, sometimes it doesn’t. My saving grace: I coffee maker at my office and an espresso machine at home.

Miss Cookie, I too am just like you. I resort to sugary goodness whenever the wedding stress arises (or whenever I can’t keep my mind off chocolate)! Lately, I have been keeping Haagen Daz Chocolate Sorbet in my freezer and scooping out one scoop (not eating directly from the container as I usually desire). This has been curing my choco-holicness for now. Another thing that has been working is doing yoga, it’s not only a workout but it also helps relieve stress (a whole mind-body thing).
