About Miss Sea Breeze

Romance on a Jet Plane

July 25th, 2008 @ 5:00 pm by Miss Sea Breeze

I’ve been so excited to tell you all about how we ended up deciding to have a destination wedding that I haven’t even shared one of our most important stories: how we met!

The year was 2003. Upon the prompting of my cousin… let’s call her ‘Pepperpot’… I did something totally unrelated to my career path (read: soooo un-Capricornish) and moved to the opposite end of the country to be a flight attendant. (Did I mention Pepperpot is wild and spontaneous? It’s one of those stories of our youth that we will be telling our grandchildren about one day from our side-by-side rocking chairs. They probably won’t believe us, though. Oh, and she’s also my Maid of Honor.)

A couple months into our adventure, the airline decided to have a cross-country promotion. They thought it would be nice to have one of their flight attendants travel with the team to interact with the public and keep an eye on things. And we’re still not sure why, but of all the flight attendants, they chose me.

Maybe it was fate.

Because guess who worked for the marketing company that the airline hired to do the promotion?

So that’s how Mr. and Miss Sea Breeze met - in an airplane, cruising at an altitude of 33,000 feet, somewhere over Manitoba.

Of course, we were both on our way to the same place and would have met once we landed anyway. But Mr. SB, being the funny guy he is, likes to tell people we met on a plane and lets them draw their own ‘mile high club’ conclusions.

During the first leg of the promo in Winnipeg, even though I was technically Mr. SB’s “client,” we laughed, we flirted, we joked around… and once we even went into a jewelry store and, without any prior discussion, spontaneously pretended to be engaged and interested in a $20,000 ring just for kicks. (Yes, it’s true.)

The first (illicit) kiss happened on the Calgary leg of the promotion (for the record, I made the first move) and by the time we got to the Vancouver part, we both knew this was something more than just very, very good client relations.

After the promo was over, we traveled back and forth between the two cities where we lived for half a year until the next twist of fate—I applied for, and won, a marketing job with the airline… which just so happened to be in Montreal, where Mr. SB lived. I moved, and somewhere in between all the bring-your-own-wine-dinners, the midsummer’s night parties on St. Laurent Street, and the times spent laughing together until we couldn’t laugh anymore…we fell in love. Big time. (Or as my mom would say, “big times.”)

Considering the way we met, the amount of flying we did in the beginning and the fact that every one of our guests will have to fly to our wedding, I guess you could say we have a bit of an airplane theme to our relationship.

As for the proposal, it could also be said this sweet moment in our airplane relationship occurred in close proximity to an ‘airport’…albeit a different kind of airport.

Needless to say, that’s a whole other story.

Did anyone else meet their fiance on a jet plane or another unconventional location?

Nope, I met my man in good ol highschool… but I think highschool is a different world all in itself ;) I loved reading your story. I now can’t get, “I’m leaving on a jet plane” out of my head. You know- the Armageddon version- I’m singing everyone’s parts

I met my now-husband on a cruise ship. He was working during his med school break playing piano. I was cruising with my family. I eavesdropped on a conversation, found out he lived close to me and went to med school across the street from my college, and introduced myself on New Year’s Eve. Once we got back “on land” we went on a few dates and the rest is history!

@Miss Espresso: I know! I also have that song stuck in my head now too!!

@kleverkira: That’s the second romance I’ve heard that’s blossomed on a cruise ship. I had no idea it was such a hot place for romance.

FH and I did meet on a plane, a United flight between Boise, Idaho and Denver, Colorado. Just happened to be seated next to one another, talked the whole flight and managed to get back in touch once we were both back in Boise again. No too often I sit next to someone who lives in the same city I do. We’re incorporating travel themes into our wedding as a result. Boarding Pass Syrah anyone?!

We met sailing on the Charles River in Boston. We’re going with a water related theme for our wedding.

Lovely story! Makes mine seem so tame and boring :-)

I hired my FI (at my roommates’ Future FIL’s recommendation) to tile my bathroom. Turns out it was a set up from the start.

What a great story!

I met my FI while we were both working for a civilian firm that was contracted to the Canadian military in Afghanistan. We dated long distance for a couple months (he was in Ontario and I was in BC) but he eventually moved out to Vancouver and the rest is history

My husband and I met in the airport in Casablanca, Morocco (thus the screenname) on our way to study Arabic for a semester at a small university in the center of the country. I was sitting on the plane next to a girl who knew him from school and she introduced us after the flight landed. We spent the semester traveling all around Morocco sight-seeing and *cue theme from Casablanca* falling in love.

As a nod to our Moroccan courtship we used a Moroccan henna design throughout our wedding: I hand-painted it on our invitations & thank-you notes, we had it done in icing on our cake, and I had henna tatoos on my hands and feet.

How’s this for an unconventional location . . . my fiance and I met at a gay bar. And we’re both straight. We just happen to have quite a few gay friends.
