Non-Floral Bouquets

July 28th, 2008 @ 3:39 pm by Mrs. Pineapple

You all gave some great suggestions for non-floral centerpieces; your creativity never ceases to amaze. When I read Hana Schank’s “A More Perfect Union” she said that in her research that she could not find the origin of the floral bridal bouquet. In my own search to figure out why we carry clusters of flowers (aka Googling up a storm) I found a few possible explanations. The one that makes the most sense to me is that brides carried flowers to cover up any unpleasant odors that came from not showering regularly. Since most modern brides will indeed shower on their wedding day, I think alternative bouquets are a wonderful way to show some personality.

Here are some my favorites:

Clay:

This is my favorite fresh flower alternative. (Which pretty much goes without saying since this is a photo of my mock-up bouquet.) I love the idea of carrying this work of art down the aisle knowing that someone crafted each flower with love. Diane of DK Designs Hawaii is a wonderful clay flower artist and I cannot rave more about her work.

Beads:

Custom beaded bouquets may not save you any money, but they are wonderfully personal and of course will last a lifetime.Button and Felt:

These hand-crafted button and felt bouquets would be wonderful for a casual, crafty bride. They are so cute. (Cute as a button in fact! Yeah, I went there)Feathers:

Peacock feathers have become more and more popular for wedding centerpieces, but also look wonderful as the main player in a bouquet. This bouquet is definitely a great alternative for the budget bride.

Muff:

A fur or faux fur muff would be lovely for a winter wedding. I love this look vintage, chic and oh so cozy.

Paper:

This paper and feather bouquet is so soft and so romantic. I love when paper flowers are used in a way that makes them look like paper instead of making them look “real.”

Parasol:

Parasols or umbrellas are a great way to give you and your bridesmaids something lovely to hold, especially for an outdoor spring or summer wedding. (They are practical too!)

Herbs:

Herb bouquets make a wonderful alternative for brides who want a fresh rustic bouquet without the expense.

Ornaments (and paper):

How fun are these bouquets?! The bride made her bouquet out of Christmas ornaments and her bridesmaids bouquets were made out of paper. (Also, don’t her bridesmaids look great - and coordinated - in their different dresses?)

Will you be carrying a non-floral bouquet?

I’ll either be carrying a parasol or an artificial arrangement, because our wedding is going to be in a remote Himalayan town in India where the choice of fresh flowers is limited and the number of pro florists is obviously zero!

A parasol might be nice, because the area has a uniquely British feel (it’s in the Darjeeling tea district), but I also like the traditional look of a floral bouquet. Hmmm…decisions, decisions.

I love these alterna-bouquets. Except I wonder how I would cover up unpleasant odors I emit from not showering regularly?

@ustwiggie: Wow. Your wedding sounds like it’ll be unique and spectacular — I hope you’ll share pictures.

I’m using some tall grasses, some curly willow, but mostly wire, lightbulbs and clear glass ornaments. Being able to make the bouquet ahead of time = priceless.

PS. Obviously won’t be tossing it!

I like the herb bouquet. Even though you wouldn’t have the fresh floral scent- you could still get in on some minty freshness. Forget to brush your teeth? Just pick a leaf off and start chewing ;)

Yay for alternative bouquets! I carried a beaded bouquet, and all of our centerpieces were crafted flowers:

Our bouts for the men are the button “flower” stems from etsy. My bouquet will be a basket with wildflowers. It’s an ultra relaxed wedding.

I was just telling my mom that I thought (me) having a bouquet was silly. I’ll be carrying the Catholic missal that my grandmother carried for her wedding, and several other family members since. Carrying a bouquet AND book while holding my father’s arm seems like too much to juggle, especially considering that I’ll just hand it all over to my MOH once I reach the end of the aisle. It will be a prop in a couple of portraits and a bouquet toss. That’s it.

…but I should say that I was saying this while I made the prototype for my DIY bouquet. Hypocritical - yes - but at least I’ll get mine for only $20. I’m doing one just because I’m afraid that I’ll realize WHY I need a bouquet if I DON’T have one! ;)

My sister had a winter wedding. She carried had a vintag white fur muff instead of a bouquet and all of the bridesmaids had faux fur black muffs to match our bridesmaid dresses. It was great for a winter wedding.
