Ring My Bell

July 29th, 2008 @ 9:30 am by Mrs. Avocado

It’s been so hard to hold off showing you all my gorgeous ring until now. I’ve actually had it in my possession since April. Yes, I, the bride, have had it since April. We found it on the website Sylvia’s Antique Jewelry. When we decided that this was the ring to order, I wanted to do it as soon as possible because I was worried that someone else might snap it up before we could.

We were dating long distance and Mr. Avocado was coming up very soon and so it only made sense to ship it up to Utah where I was living. After we decided to keep it, I somehow ended up storing it in my apartment at school until I moved down to Dallas. I cannot remember why this was the best plan, but it’s a good thing that the ring was three sizes too small because the temptation to wear it around was huge. I was sworn to secrecy concerning its presence by Mr. Avocado, and was only allowed to show it to my immediate family.

The diamond is described as an “N” color on the website, which made me very nervous when we put in the order. The diamond does not look perfect by any means, but I’m okay with that.

The ring was listed as made of white gold, but the jeweler we took it to for the resizing told us it is actually made of platinum. WHAT THE? Yes, this makes me a little nervous because it seems like a pretty huge detail to overlook… but I love my ring so who cares? We have never had a full appraisal done on it, so for all I know the diamond isn’t even real. The two of us made a decision when we took it out of the package, that the ring was worth what we paid for it because we both loved it. This may be a young and foolish mistake on our part, but a diamond like this is never really going to increase in monetary value, likely only emotional value.

If you have found a ring on Sylvia’s website that you are interested in, you can read a full review of my experience with them here.

Anyone else order their ring online and have that “love at first sight” moment?

I’m relatively sure that platinum was used before white gold in wedding bands. I just read this in the Vintage Wedding book (but don’t quote me on this). :)

You may want to think about getting it appraised regardless. You’ll know the value to you is beyond anything monetary, but having it insured also can bring piece of mind. Even if it’s not a diamond (which with it being vintage and in platinum is highly unlikely), the platinum is worth a lot and will definetly increase in value over time.

Congratulations! You might want to have it appraised for insurance reasons. The band was actually more valuable than they thought, and you’d hate for the diamond to be underestimated as well.

Congratulations!!! The ring is beautiful! We were shopping there and at FayCullen.com. Both are such great sites (Fay Cullen’s photos are a bit better, IMO), and I was so happy to have found them. Yes, get it appraised for insurance purposes.

@Michelle:
Things happen… and sometimes its to things we love and even try to take care of.. like jewelry. You need to insure your beautiful ring. If it was lost or stolen, you wouldn’t want to have to fork over the amount you paid AGAIN and maybe then some to find a new one. Or, say a prong breaks (platinum is sturdy, but not indestructible) and you loose your diamond AND have to fix the prong.. ouch for the budget. You love your ring. Yeah! You don’t care about the monetary value. Yeah! You still need to get it insured.

Wow, what a cool and unique ring setting!!! I keep scrolling up to look at it again, and I like it more every time. :-)

I really love your story and am glad that you guys did it your way, without bending to anyone else’s pressure. That said, I’m very glad (.0001% as glad as you are, I’m sure!) that you have it on your finger now!

Agreed that you should get it appraised/insured… even if it’s worth $50 (which obviously it’s not), it’s something that’s of value to you.

We ordered mine online, sight unseen, and I was in LOVE when I got it home. I’ve had it on my finger since March and it’s not appraised yet - so I feel ya on that one. I just love it so much, I don’t want to let it out of my sight! But, I need to, so I need to get it done soon. It’s best in the end if you do, if something happens, you’re covered.

I like your ring a lot, too. Very unique and lovely. :)

LOVE your ring. Love it. My sister in law is getting married in three days; they’re LDS and getting married at the new Rexburg temple. I’m way excited to see her dress, and how the rest of your wedding pans out!

@thistleorchid: @Michelle: @violetquagmire: @mdarrah: @GorgesViola: @RLR52309: Thanks to everyone who got me thinking about apppraisal and insurance. It would cost me a whole lot of money to have a custom replica of this ring made if I ever lost it! When I lost my digital camera I cried myself to sleep every single night for something like 2 weeks (sometimes I even broke down in the middle of the day), and so I can’t even begin to imagine what an emotional wreck I would be if I ever lost it. Thanks you guys!

I bought an antique ring as well. It’s from Ole Moon on lower greenville in Dallas, check it out! I’ve always known I wanted an antique ring because of the uniqueness and rich history. I found it because FMIL told me about Ole Moon and lo and behold they had antique jewelry. I saw this ring and swooned but was not getting engaged yet. Then a month later then BF and I were talking and he admitted he was looking at rings and I said well I already found one. The next day we put it on lay away and I said he had to surprise me with it whenever it was paid off. So a few months later I was proposed to and got to wear my ring! Then we got it apraised and found out it was platinum as well and was worth more than twice as much as we paid for it! The owner of the shop is also going to make me a custom band to fit snuggly around the oddly shaped ring with vintage diamonds to boot, perfect!

@Miss Gardenia: Oh, what a fun find. I really want to visit! You actually reminded me of a couple that I served at the restaurant I work at in Washington. She had a really amazing ring, and I think she found it at that store!
