About Mrs. Cherry Pie

Hard Pillow, Soft Pillow

July 29th, 2008 @ 2:00 pm by Mrs. Cherry Pie

For our wedding, I’ve decided I wanted something… firmer… than the average ring pillow. In fact, I want to forgo fabric and plush entirely for a more “natural” look. And while I think the ever-popular Paloma’s Nest Ring Bowls are beautiful, they just aren’t quite what I’m looking for.

I want something that evokes a natural, rustic, ambiance without being puffy or floofy. I’m quite taken with these moss and twig “nests”…

1. Very pretty, but a bit too “puffy.”

2. Mrs. Radish’s own DIY ring pillow!

3. Lovely nest, but our wedding is bird-free

Somewhere along the way, I became smitten with these ring pillows from Muscari Designs:

They’re a simple birch “slice” with a hole drilled in the center. There’s a ribbon threaded through the hole and knotted on both sides to prevent slippage. They’re only $10 on Etsy!

If I had a choice, I’d opt for a wood other than birch - perhaps a native evergreen tree, maple, or aspen. But aren’t they beautiful as-is?

Ultimately, our ring pillow will be a total surprise to us. Our ring bearer is the son of our officiant, a very crafty woman who will also be making us some rustic, wooden table numbers and wedding signs. Her son is similarly inclined, and with her wood shop at his disposal, he’ll be making our ring “pillow” as his wedding gift to us.

What a relief to not have to decide on one little aspect of the wedding. That alone is a great gift, but I’m definitely also looking forward to seeing what he comes up with!

How will your ring bearer carry your rings?

I knit our ring pillow …
[ http://loves.a.limey.googlepages.com/diyprojects ] The pattern is really from a knit quilt sampler, but I’d always wanted an excuse to do that tree pattern. The yarn was bargain-clearance and I already had the needles and the pattern, so it was under $5.

I’m using the birch slice from Muscari! She was lovely to work with and picked a great ribbon based on my request. It totally fit into my Portland, Oregon “woody” aesthetic.

I’ve had a schoolgirl crush on the Muscari birch pillows for some time now! I think I will DIY…something similar, anyway.

I’m going to make our ring bowls. It’ll be a lot of work, but something we can keep forever…on the nightstand no less. I think a pillow would just wind up in the bottom of a closet or something…

Love the wood cut! Great style, seems more “manly,” and it would be so easy to make (if your FI has a woodshop like mine does, I guess ;) )

I love those birch slices! We already bought our ring-transporter (not a pillow either).

We’re having our ring bearer carry this:

I hate ring pillows… but I can see us hanging this in our home together as a wedding keepsake. I love the idea. :)

I’m thinking of using a woodne sailboat with the rings tied at the bow or to the mast fro our nautical themed wedding.

I love those birch slices too! I also love the idea that your ring bearer is making your “pillow” that is really cool!

I love creative ring pillows, and I think you’re on to something.

We used a 1920’s ring box that my guy proposed with, so it only seemed natural. No frou-frou lacy contraption for me!

love-a-limey: I had knit ring pillows, too! A friend of mine from my knitting group knit them for me (I ran out of time). They were sooo pretty, just simple stockinette with a seed stitch band across the middle. And she found some really pretty iridescent butterfly buttons.

We’re thinking of doing something similar to Mrs Radish, but I do love those birch slices

Ahh! My birch “slice” ring bearer cushion just arrived from Etsy the other day, and it’s more beautiful in person than the pictures reveal - and so soft too! We’re also going to have some birch vases as part of our rustic/woodsy theme. I’m glad to see other brides like this cushion as well!

@ Lucy — I love that I can see those Rav pictures. ;) Love your pillows, and I love that it was made for you by a friend!

I definitely love the birch slices — they’re beautiful. Are there any local artists who can make some for you?

For my wedding last month, I made a ring box out of moss, wood, and some ribbon. I think it might be kind of what you’re looking for? I love the natural look with moss and wood, and we also had pink flowers mixed in. Here’s a picture of the ring box: http://bkbphoto.com/blog/posts/0024.jpg

If you’re interested, I also had some other wedding items that follow the same kind of theme. I blogged about it on the Pink Orchid Weddings blog: http://www.pinkorchidweddings.blogspot.com
