About Mrs. Shortcake

So they told us we couldn’t have peonies (unless, of course, we wanted them imported from South America for $1000 a case), and I was sad. I gave up and gave in to the inevitability of a peony-free wedding.

And then I had my first face-to-face meeting with our floral designer - and what she suggested was pure brilliance.

Dahlias.

I would have never, ever considered these beauties, because for the longest time I was under the misguided impression that all dahlias were brown bedraggled creatures, like the forlorn specimens in a neighbour’s yard.

Luckily for me, dahlias ac-tually come in many beautiful shades of red, orange, yellow, pink, and white. Considering that three of our wedding colours just happened to be yellow, pink, and white, it was a blessing indeed.

Now, my darling readers, because everyone needs a little floral porn in their lives, I’m going to introduce you to my new favourite flower and star of our wedding, the dahlia!

Wow. Not only do they come in huge - hey-I-can-use-you-as-a-dinner-plate! sizes (like my beloved peonies), they’re also fluffy and feminine, and for the OCD Monica in me, they’re delightfully ordered and symmetrical. It’s the little things that count. :)

Stay tuned to see where this new floral vision took the Shortcake wedding, I promise it’s good. :D

Do you have a signature flower in your wedding?

Dahlias and ranunculus will compose the basis of my floral vision — with some hydrangea thrown in to good effect. I LOVE how bright and vibrant the colors look on all three. :-)

I think we’ll be having a lot of dahlias too! Peonies are not a December flower, alas :( I can’t wait to see how your flowers turn out!

I’ve always LOVED dahlias b/c they are full, brightly colored, and come in a variety of sizes and textures. I’m a September bride and I’m using lots and lots of dahlias :)

There are also lots of U-Pick dahlia farms near the Seattle area…there are so many beautiful colors to choose from (opening weekend starts August 8th)…check out some of the flowers they grow:

I used Dahlias for our bouquets. So pretty and they lasted all day without putting them in water!

I sooo wanted dahlias for my bouquet in May, but they weren’t in season! Instead I had peonies, which was fine (no one had any idea what flower that was…). We should have switched dates, lol. Perfect choice!

Those are all beautiful! My favorite flower is the calla lily, so they were everywhere in our wedding. My bouquet was red roses and mini white callas, my toss bouquet was mini white and deep red callas, my MOH carried large white callas with a few red roses, the BM’s carried large white callas, the GM’s and dads had mini white calla bouts, my DH and ringbearer had deep red mini calla bouts, and our moms had mini white callas and mini red roses in their corsages.

Beautiful! I really love the shape of the petals, they’re such a vibrant flower! My wedding was in December, and we used red roses. The church was decorated with tons of poinsettias though, so it was almost like a second theme!
