Read More Over There

July 30th, 2008 @ 12:09 am by Mrs. Bee

Thanks for bearing with us during our weeklong test to limit “Read More Right Here” to the top few posts!

An update: visitors have definitely increased!  That’s wonderful - it means that pages are loading faster, more people are able to access Weddingbee, and new visitors to the site are sticking around instead of leaving before the page loads.  However, all is not well for our servers: while they’re serving more users, they also seem to be crashing more.

Poor Bil Bee and Mr. Bee - they are sleeping in shifts to make sure that they can reboot the servers at night.  But we are also huge fans of Read More Right Here ourselves, and don’t want to just disable the feature.

So Bil Bee just suggested a creative solution: we’ll create a special page, where Read More Right Here will live.  That way, you can still access the feature… but hopefully since only a few of us are using it, our servers will be happier.

In the meantime, we’ll turn off Read More Right Here on the main front page - this will limit the load on our server, and make the site faster for new users.

Here’s the link to the Read More Right Here option:

If the servers hold up, we will continue to support this feature at that link and you can just bookmark it for your convenience.

Try it out and let us know what you think!  Also, on a related note: have you noticed the front page loading considerably faster this past week?

Hi Mrs. Bee,
I missed the “read more right here…” option too. This is working out quite conveniently for now! :)

Even though i like the “read more right here” feature, I also understand that you are doing a lot already. I appreciate that you try to please your readers.

Everyone needs to understand that this is a free site and we need to accept any decisions you make concerning the website.

Thank you Mrs. Bee!

aww, you had my hopes up! I was hoping the alternative page would show ALL the Read More Right Heres–poobah.

I do miss the feature, that’s for sure. It did make wb super easy reading…

..but the addiction lives on!

@brendalynn: We’ll have to see how the server does with 3 posts! If it holds up, maybe we can increase? We thought we’d start small, rather than promise the world!

I have noticed the faster loading too. And, while I liked “Read more right here,” I won’t miss it that much. If there are comments I’m going to click on the post anyway so it’s not a big loss for me. I definitely prefer the super fast loading speed!

Thanks for all the hard work Bees!

I’m so glad you didn’t nix the read right here option, I love that option and even found myself not coming to weddingbee much the past few days because it seemed like a nuisance not to have it…

Thanks for keeping it!!!

Thanks for all the hard work you guys do….. I never noticed problems with pages loading before, but everything is still running smoothly for me!

Just one more thought on this — I read WB through rss/google reader and all content is loaded.. could this be a burden on the server as well? I know some blogs display a bit of a post, and then you have to launch the actual site to continue reading, but WB loads it all…

I haven’t noticed any difference in the front page (it could be loading faster, I just never thought it loaded slowly in the past). However, I have been finding that the subsidiary pages (e.g. the pages with the full entries) load pretty slowly. I’ve actually been cutting back on my reading - whereas in the past I read basically every post, for the past few days I’ve only been reading the ones with “read more right here” or ones that, based on the teaser, look super interesting — because I’ve been frustrated at the load speeds of the entry pages.

@missrae: The RSS feed is actually hosted by our outside RSS provider, FeedBurner, so the text shouldn’t put much of a load on our servers at all. The images may place a load on our servers though - hmm, are you suggesting we stop allowing our RSS feeds to display images? We’ll have to mull that one over.

@Dawn: Ah interesting - thanks for the report! We’ll run some tests and see if we can spot the slowness… hopefully we can address it!

Just a guess, (and I might be wrong since I have no idea how any of these computer/server stats work :) ) but if other readers are doing what I’ve been doing, that’s why you may have noticed an “increase” in traffic. Basically, I keep hitting “Back” after reading each post, or clicking on the Weddingbee logo on top to take me back to the main page, rather than using the links on each post to take me to the next/previous posts. Therefore… I think it may actually be using up more server space for readers like me who can’t subconsciously stop doing that! I’m slowly transitioning to using the next/previous links now, but it’s going to take a bit of time :) .

Thanks for all you guys do!

@Nstar: Ah interesting! Clicking “Back” shouldn’t generate a pageview (most browsers cache the pages you’ve just visited), but clicking the logo definitely will.

Regardless of pageviews though, our stats are definitely showing an increase in visitors! That’s probably what’s gotten us most excited…
