Thinking Inside the Box

July 30th, 2008 @ 12:30 pm by Mrs. Cherry Pie

I love old wooden boxes!

Little ones, big ones, crates and containers… I think they’re just so neat and special looking.

In fact, I picked up something pretty much just like this Dupont Explosives box (but more weathered) at the Fremont Sunday Antique Market a few months ago…

Right now the box is housing some of my favorite antique mason jars, and it will serve that purpose until they’re transported to Polebridge.

The question is, what should I do with it AT the wedding? I really want it to be part of the rustic details, but I can’t decide how.

I could use it to house programs, but I think we’re only going to be printing 50 [1 for every 2 guests] and that’s not nearly enough to fill it.

I could set it on one of the “station” tables or buffets as a stand for flower vases.

I guess I could also use it to display my river rock “place cards.” I think I’d need more than one for that… good thing I have the option to pick up as many as I want!

Below is a picture our wedding/engagement photographer sent me of a stash of cherry & explosive boxes she has in her barn. Some are white, some are red, and some are a nice, natural brown. She’s willing to give me as many as I need…

Any suggestions on how to use some of these lovely boxes as a part of our wedding decor? Have you seen any photos of weathered crates used in weddings before?

Are you having an “exit?” They could hold sparklers … which would be funny since it says explosives!
Are you giving out flip flops or pashminas? They would look good in there too!

Cherry! As in Cherry Pie! How cute. I ditto the cake stand! Put a piece of glass covering one and put the cake on top!

Anything you’d use a basket for!

Sorry if I missed any posts re: your cake, Cherry Pie…but yes, a cake stand would be great, especially if you have several separate cakes and stack the boxes at different heights! or you could do that with a dessert table or any other buffet food for that matter.

If you can’t think of a use as a container, consider turning them upside down to use as platforms or on their sides to use as signs.

i’m thinking you could put flowers luike large flower basins - if you’re afraid of damaging the crates leave the flowers potted - but a nice little groups of some hydrangeas

or if they’re sturdy enough nice low cocktail area benches

i also like nycgirl’s suggestion as a beverage holder, you could line the with those styrofoam coolers and fill with ice and so nice bottled beverages (in wedding colors of course!

I love the idea of using one as a cake stand and as coolers. Also, what about using a small one as a card box or I’m not sure if you’re having a guest book, but if you’re doing little notes, it would be cute to collect them in one.

I like the idea of using them as a cake stand or you could have the waiters serve drinks in them. They would be great to use on the tables to elevate a low arrangement or used as a container for an arrangement.

as a base for your escort rocks would be fabulous, in addition to the cake stand mentioned above.

if you’re having stations for food, consider having the caterers use them for stands?

Ha, my first thought was programs too :) But I was thinking of it filled with daisies with the programs in the middle, or scattered on top of the daisies. Perhaps it is not practical or might get your programs dirty - I also really like the cake stand idea!

agggghhhhh I looked many many places to find similar crates for our centerpieces. Then I gave up and paid too much money for ones with much less personality. sigh. :-(

I can’t tell how big they are, but what about bread baskets (lined with napkins)?

What about bottles of water for guests at the ceremony? Or milk at the reception for late night goodies (if you’re doing that)?

The cake stand idea is fab!

Um those are SO AWESOME! I think you should put them wherever and however you’d like. How big are they?

The sparklers thing is genius.

Your wedding style is similar to mine, so I love to read your posts and see what charming rustic vintage finds you’ve got up your sleeve.

You could turn them upside down and use them to add height to centerpieces. Maybe have some mason jars around it and some sitting higher on top of it. Or you could just sprinkle them around in corners of the venue and top with candles.

Another idea is to fill it with something like flip-flops or pashminas for the guests. (I know this would involve spending more money so might not be the best plan). Good luck!

Whatever you decide I am sure they will look great!
