A Half Hour of No Weddingbee!

July 31st, 2008 @ 11:00 am by BIL Bee

Weddingbee was just down for 25 minutes!  It had nothing to do with our servers: our webhost’s nameserver went down.  :-(

When you type weddingbee.com into your browser, your computer has to ask a “name server” which IP address to send you to – so that you can find our servers.  The name server is like the Yellow Pages of the net: you look up the name, and the Yellow Pages tells you the phone number and street address of the business.  That’s the system that went down for us!

We’ve never had that happen before.  We’re looking into getting a more powerful name server with backups built in, so that this doesn’t happen again.  It’s pretty expensive though, so we’re weighing the pros and cons first.  We’ll know more as soon as we talk to our name server provider.

But we wanted to let you guys know right away what the word was!  We’ll keep you posted in the comments…

BIL Bee and Mr. Bee, thank you for all the hard work you guys do to keep weddingbee up 24/7. As an addict it prevents me from going into withdrawal. As a sys admin, I feel your pain, its not easy making sure everything is working 24/7, especially with the type of traffice Weddingbee generates. Just wanted to say thank you, we really appreciate it.

@Luxe: Thanks Luxe!

This is totally not the place for geeky technical questions, but after seeing Luxe’s comment, I had to ask…

Does anybody use Ultra DNS or anything like that?

@Vic004: Ah I feel bad, I didn’t want to mention their name… but once they confirmed it was an issue on their end, I just linked to it without thinking!

Just to clarify, we’ve been pretty happy with mediatemple’s webhosting service. The issue here was with their domain name server (or “DNS”) systems. We’ll wait to hear from them on exactly what happened before making a decision on whether or not to change vendors…

Yeah, I panicked, but then realized I shouldn’t be checking it out while I’m at work anyway. :)

BIL Bee, I looked into DNSUltra in the past. The service they offer is good but they have had customers complain for misbillings. Have you checked http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com/

I think one of Miss Sweet Tea’s posts disappeared… there was a link to it at the bottom of one post, but no evidence of it on the main page!

We were in the middle of getting some posts ready for publication when the outage hit. Wow, you’re good – that post was only public for one minute! In any case, everything is back on track now… thanks for the heads up.

Thank you for all of your hard work! I really appreciate that there are people behind Weddingbee and an honest dialog. All too often things go down or do not work and never really is there a voice saying what happened and why. It really shows that Weddingbee is different!

Ack! The idea of no WeddingBee, even for a 1/2 hour is awful! I’m an avid WeddingBee reader, and also do the marketing for Dynect.com (Consumer brand DynDNS.com). Saw you mentioned UltraDNS - but you should take a look at Dynect. We’re more affordable, and if I say so myself, more awesome.

Regardless, thanks for all your hard work on this site!
