About Mrs. Sundae

For Me??

July 31st, 2008 @ 3:05 pm by Mrs. Sundae

It’s been a whirlwind of wedding activity these days. I feel like as soon as we hit the 3 month mark someone pressed “fast forward,” and I’ve been flying by the seat of my pants ever since! Part of the activity included a most lovely shower two weeks ago. I don’t have all the pictures from the hostesses quite yet (cough* get on with it! *cough) but in the meantime, I can share the most well planned present in the history of presents.

It was from my very dear friend and bridesmaid who lives in Idaho and understandably couldn’t make it in for the shower. Instead she sent the box pictured above… even the packing was green! And it contained these adorable place mats and napkins from Anthropologie:

I am sorry to say that I didn’t even know these existed until I got some of my very own! There was also this adorable wooden box, complete with my name on the outside:
And it was filled with the perfect storm of relaxation perfection. Handmade cards, a candle in a black, white & green tin, tea, chocolate, and this fantastic goodness that I also didn’t know existed:

They are seriously tea bags that you put in the bath with you! I am guessing they’ll be gone by the time the wedding rolls around. There was no chance I was waiting until after the wedding to start using all the goodies we got at the shower, evidenced by the fact that the place mats have already found a home on our table:

I got to bring home all of the hydrangeas they used during the shower, so I suppose this is a sneak peek at the decor. And yes, if you look closely, they’re in a mixing bowl. Mr. Sundae was in charge of bringing everything home and we found all the hydrangeas together in this bowl. The stems were cut short so he couldn’t figure out how they should fit in vases, and this was how he improvised. I enjoyed it too much to take them out.

Did you receive any “off-registry” gifts that you loved?

My wedding colors are apple green, white and black (or damask) and I just stopped by Anthropologie today and saw those table linens and was drawn to them…and I live in Idaho…weird! Adorable packaging…what a lovely gift.

My favorite “off-registry” gift is the caramel-colored glass bowl that’s now sitting on our dining table. My fiance’s favorite is a set of tea towels made my his late-great-grandmother.

For the most part, though, I wish people would stick to the registry. We have received some gifts that are nice, but not our style. It’s a pain to have to try to figure out where to return them to.

We got some tremendous handmade gifts, including stained glass, cross stitching, and a set of place mats wrapped up with pictures of the loom they were woven on.

But for the most case, I have to agree with Stephanie above that the registry exists for a reason. We didn’t even ask for a lot of “stuff”–we requested donations instead–but about a third of the “stuff” we did get is boxed up in the basement, and is likely to remain so.

My favorite off-registry gift that we got was a fabulous set of stoneware measuring cups from my DH’s cousin. Each cup is a different color and they are the exact same colors on our everyday dishes from Corelle, which are also the same colors we used for everything in the kitchen. I love that they are functional decoration!

My favorite “off registry” items was a “living green” bath set that my mother’s sister gave us - it contained bamboo towels, a bamboo clothes hamper, bamboo brush, eco friendly bathroom cleaner…. etc. It was such a perfect nod to who she is and hopefully it will give my future hubby and I that extra kick start to have a green marriage.
