No Ski for Me!

July 31st, 2008 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Champagne

I’ve always wanted a winter wedding. That is, until I saw a summer wedding in my hometown. Growing up in a small town in the mountains of Colorado, there are limited choices as to where you can tie the knot. Most summer brides opt for an outdoor wedding either on the mountain or somewhere special to the couple within the Vail valley.

So when I say people get married on the mountain, I mean LITERALLY the top of the mountain…

I admit I’ve never seen this:

I’m not sure how flattering ski boots would be with my dress. I think I need a little heel and I’m pretty sure ski boots only come in flats. Would be kinda fun though… hmm.

Instead, the mountain weddings in Colorado are usually more like this:

nilscristiwedding.jpg

Pretty breathtaking. But I’m a little on the clumsy side, and knowing me, I’d fall off the chairlift in a wedding dress on the way up the mountain. Not exactly what I pictured for our wedding. Actually, my brother and sister in-law were married in the summer just a few blocks away from our childhood home (pictured above). I loved the mountain backdrop and I’ve seriously reconsidered a summer wedding sooo many times.

Although I love so much about summer weddings, there’s something about a winter wedding that just screams romance. The snow, candlelight, warm fires, and so much more. Not to mention, it’s a great time to just snuggle inside and enjoy the company of guests and family that will be visiting. We’re not doing the Christmas theme, or Valentine’s theme, or snowflake theme. We just want a winter wedding centered around romance.

Any other winter brides out there?! Do share!

Not a winter bride, but another Colorado mountain bride (in Tabernash). Can’t wait to hear more about your wedding!

I love the idea of a winter wedding, it’s incredibly romantic and you can do a lot with them, though it’s not for me. Winters in Michigan are just too unpredictable. There are a lot of fun winter wardrobe options too, just think of the cloaks and muff!

I’m a winter bride! We are few and far between. I’m not doing any winter holiday theme either, or even a wintry theme. I am just focusing on warm romance. It just seems like an overlooked classy time of year to me. Can’t wait to see your color scheme and other fun ideas.

Yeah, winter weddings! No snowflake/christmas/v-day theme for me either, but I am going with a clean kind of sparse look.

Also, for winter in Philadelphia you’ve definitely got an even chance of wet, cold, grey, slushy weather, so at least I can save myself that stress and just planning for the worst. All I have to worry about is a stray ice storm.

@MissSauce: But you do have a pretty good chance of the Philly air traffic control not having their act together…oh wait, that’s all the time!

Wow! You described my idea perfectly! We also are getting married in the winter (Jan 2, 2010) and are not doing a christmas, snowflake, or valentine’s theme … just a warm, loving winter wedding. You described it perfectly!!

Does it count as a winter bride if you live in Florida? I’m getting married in December in Florida, and we’re totally playing up the winter/Christmas theme. It makes it a little more fun, since there won’t be snow in our nexk of the woods.

Oh! Me! Me!! :) Our wedding was 12/15 of 2007. Check out my blog - I’ve just posted pics from the ceremony. The church was SO beautiful and it actually snowed eight inches that day! We live in St. Louis, and when they opened the church doors at the end of the ceremony, it looked just like that scene in White Christmas where they open the barn doors and the snow is pouring down - just magical!

I’m a Vday bride, so only one week before you, but that is DEFINITELY not the theme. There will be no appearance of pink/red! Did you check on your flowers already? I think they will be back to normal prices by your wedding. We are thinking of moving ours back 2 weeks (can’t do one week) just to avoid all the “doubling” of prices…clay flowers are for the first time getting serious consideration! I’m in TX, though, so snow isn’t likely!

I’m a winter bride too (1/17/09)! We aren’t doing any snowflakes either. Just lots of warm candlelight and a warm color palatte (creams, lattes, ivorys, with touches of antique gold). I live in east Texas so there probably won’t be any snow, but hopefully it will still be chilly. I can’t wait to hear more about your wedding.

I have dreams of a winter wedding, for the same reasons you listed, but the area where I live, it can be blizzards and -20 or more below zero anywhere from december to march. I guess we’ll see when the time comes…

No winter wedding for me… but C. and I met on the mountain, and we’re pretty obsessed with snowboarding/teleskiing.

Our big debate was whether we should get married at the resort that we met at. Because we both worked there for so long, we eventually decided to do it somewhere else that wasn’t a reminder of work!

Winter bride over here! I was hooked after attending my MOH’s wedding, she was a millennium winter bride and I’ve been dreaming of my own “WW” ever since! Just like you, we’re opting not to go with the winter or Valentine’s Day theme. I want a lot of snow!

Our colours are sapphire blue (navy) and fuchsia.

Google Reader gave me a different second picture, as well! It also published this entry last night… so weird.

We got married in Telluride this March. It was awesome…we skied the morning of the wedding and then rode the gondola up to the top of the mountain for the ceremony. We actually considered skiing to the ceremony, but I preferred looking hot rather than wearing ski pants.

It happened to be sunny, but it would have been fine with snow. We had a small group of people, so we could stand to improvise if the weather was a problem.

And the pictures were gorgeous:

I just noticed you and I are getting married on the same day, Miss Champagne!

I’m getting married in Michigan, and finding a location for a winter wedding was nearly impossible in my home town. Everybody there gets married in a church, which totally wasn’t what I wanted to do, and most non-church places that can do ceremonies and receptions do the ceremony outside in some garden gazebo, which clearly wasn’t an option for us!

And we’re not tying the season into our wedding either. Except for the fact that we’re getting married the night before the academy awards, so we’re doing a film theme (we were already planning that before I learned about the Oscars, so when we learned about that it seemed like fate!)

@MsAnge:

Me too!, I’m on Feb 21st also :) Almost under 200 days to go ladies!

I didn’t even realize that the Oscars were on the 22nd.

I kind of wanted a winter wedding in New England, with snow, sigh, I don’t see much snow in the Philly area, unlike the average 1ft that is on the ground 85% of the winter in my hometown. Rich jewel tones, for the colors and warm fuzzy cashmere sweaters for the maids. Alas my FI really wanted an outdoor wedding so I still get NE but I don;t get snow, unless there is a freak snowstorm in mid September. (Maybe October but not September)

LOL I definitely have seen the first photo in person before. You grew up in Vail, I went to college in Gunnison and had many friends get married at Mt. Crested Butte. Skiing down the mountain in their bridal attire. It made me weep!

I wanted a winter wedding, too… but I knew a summer wedding would be more ideal for our guests and ourselves.

good luck!

We’re getting married on 8th November… hoping for a beautiful, clear, cold winter’s day… although it might be more like rainy autumn!
