Something Blue

July 31st, 2008 @ 5:05 pm by Mrs. Cookie

I was born and raised in Montana. Although this little country bumpkin’s heart was meant for the big city, I can’t get Montana out of my blood. It is an innate part of me, and no matter where I live or travel, Montana will always be my home! (I totally envy Miss Cherry Pie, and think she is doing a fabulous job in capturing the essence of Big Sky County for her wedding!) But for many reasons, Mr. Cookie and I decided not to get married in Montana. However, both of my parents decided that I needed a little piece of Montana at the wedding.

This arrived in the mail yesterday from my dad, who still lives in Montana. It’s a Yogo sapphire—my something blue.

According to to Rogers Jewelers:

Precious Yogo sapphires lay in Yogo Gulch, a 5-mile long dike near the Little Belt Mountains… [in] 1860s prospector Jake Hoover began looking for gold near Yogo Gulch. He found a few flakes, but more intriguing were the heavy, blue pebbles that settled in the bottom of his sluice box. In 1895 he sealed the stones in a cigar box and sent them to Tiffany and Co. in New York City for identification and appraisal. Hoover was astonished to receive a check from Tiffany’s for $3,750 and a note describing the stones as “sapphires of unusual quality.” Over the next 100 years, a string of mines produced nearly $25 million worth of sapphires, or Montana “blue gold.” Yogos have graced the gemstone collections of Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, Queen Victoria, and the Duchess of York. England’s Prince Charles gave Lady Diana Spencer a magnificent 9-carat oval Yogo sapphire surrounded by diamonds to celebrate their engagement. In Lewistown [Montana], Yogos glitter from local ladies’ earrings, necklaces, and wedding bands.

After perusing a multitude photos that my dad sent me of necklaces, I decided to get a loose stone and have it set in Colorado. Now, I just need to come-up with a necklace design. It’s really small, only .2 carat, so I need a design that will enhance the stone.

Any thoughts?

Yay! I’m a MT bride and my engagement ring has a yogo sapphire set into it (you have to take it off to see it) it will also be my something blue. I’m glad to have a little reminder of where I came from to carry with me. Way to represent the MT!

Because its small, I would actually have it be the pendant on a very thin necklace. Maybe lariat style? ooooh - yup - lariat style would be my favorite. ala these images i googled:

I think it would really show off the stone and be very Big Sky in a subtle way. (Yes I realize that sounds like an oxymoron. Oh well!) =)

A.) That stone is flipping gor-geous. That gorgeous requires a hyphen to emphasize the gorgeousness. Ack! And that it has familial roots? Even more fantastic.

B.) Has it been drilled yet? You could wear it as part of a necklace with other stones and wear it on its side as one part of a heart, and find another similar, matching stone as it’s mate for after the wedding–the ultimate bridal necklace, eh? A definite build from @mdarrah: suggested–the lariat with room for a matching stone to represent your husband and turn it into a heart (yes, kind of cheesy, but at least a good stone to match that perfect one).
