There was quite a swarm of bees this weekend in the Philadelphia area! We met at a pretty cozy hive (Marathon Grill on 10th and Walnut Street), and it was a fantastic time getting to chat with local bees and readers over Sunday brunch.
Mr. Pinot Noir and I first set foot in our event space in July 2006. We had gone to San Francisco to visit his father, and we spent a day doing wine tastings and lunch in Napa. We had lunch on the deck at Auberge du Soleil overlooking the gorgeous vineyards below. There was a wedding rehearsal going on during our lunch, and we talked about how wonderful it would be to marry there. I was hooked. From this day on it was always the place I pictured whenever I thought about our wedding.

“Add a memorable touch to your wedding with unique favors that match your theme.”
All I knew about this weekend, was that it was going to be my bachelorette - the rest of the details were a complete surprise. I have to say, the girls that helped put on the weekend, and the others who were gracious enough to attend, made it the best bachelorette I could have ever imagined.
I made sure to sleep in a little on Saturday morning because it was bound to be a long day ahead. Mom H picked me up at our house around 11:30, and off we headed to Dallas. I knew it was going to be a night event away, and had all of my things packed, when some of the bridesmaids started calling my mom and all I heard her say is “I’ll drop her off and then come meet you guys.” Drop me off? Alone?
Mom H pulled up to the Hotel Palomar, where one of my bridesmaids was waiting to pick me up and walk me to Exhale, their spa. She told me to check in, and once I was done, someone would come and pick me up.

Welcome to the third installment of the adventures of Miss Haute Cocoa (Hot Cocoa’s label-loving, bargain-hunting alter ego). If you’ve followed our penny-pinching protagonist’s adventures thus far, you know that she’s looked into direct-from-manufacturer gowns and designer sample sales. Next, follow our intrepid shopper as she goes into the dark vortex of the wedding industrial complex: Kleinfeld Bridal.

I know what you’re thinking: Miss Haute Cocoa is not the Kleinfeld type. She could care less about the “Kleinfeld experience”—the pink silk kimono; the botoxed, black-clad consultants; the fancy mirrors and rococo furnishings. All she wants is an affordable, well-made gown. Of course you’re right. That’s why she showed up on no ordinary day, but rather for Kleinfeld’s monthly sample sale, which her friend had heard about via the Knot.
(Oh dear, writing in third (fourth?) person is giving me a personality disorder.)

I just spent a half hour browsing Google for “something blue” ideas for my friend’s wedding, when I discovered this beauty:

It’s been so hard to hold off showing you all my gorgeous ring until now. I’ve actually had it in my possession since April. Yes, I, the bride, have had it since April. We found it on the website Sylvia’s Antique Jewelry. When we decided that this was the ring to order, I wanted to do it as soon as possible because I was worried that someone else might snap it up before we could.
We were dating long distance and Mr. Avocado was coming up very soon and so it only made sense to ship it up to Utah where I was living. After we decided to keep it, I somehow ended up storing it in my apartment at school until I moved down to Dallas. I cannot remember why this was the best plan, but it’s a good thing that the ring was three sizes too small because the temptation to wear it around was huge. I was sworn to secrecy concerning its presence by Mr. Avocado, and was only allowed to show it to my immediate family.

In my search for soft, loose arrangements, I found Saipua flowers. There is so much wonderful inspiration in their blog and a few laughs thrown in. I love, love, love Saipua’s style. The flowers are so loose, garden-like and natural.

My weekend began with a very exciting envelope that I received in the mail:

MOH writes, “Please come to this super cool party!”
Since this will be a lingerie shower, MOH asked me to create a text document that had my sizes on it so that she could copy and print inserts for all of the invites. She also asked me to harness my newly acquired Illustrator skills and create a map so that guests could find the shower location. I might have gone a little overboard on the final insert I handed her - but I assured her, it was created in only a few hours and was so much fun to make!

We recently had a bit of a wedding dilemma. As he wrote earlier, Mr. Cherry Pie isn’t terribly fond of renting tuxedos. As a result, Mr. CP opted to have a custom suit made for the wedding. It’s a much bigger investment than renting, but he’ll get more satisfaction and much better mileage out of it.

Lit up champagne, no less:

So with the wedding drawing closer, I’ve been dealing with the cumulating stress by… ehh… ignoring our wedding. I get overwhelmed thinking about the to-do list, and I just want to curl up into a ball with a security blanket and watch re-runs on TV. Being the wiser one between us two, Mr. Green Tea foresaw the horror to come if things continued on this course. So yesterday, the mister forced me to write down everything that is in my head in regards to wedding projects, made me dump a good chunk of the responsibilities onto him and brother GT, and we began crossing them off the list.

Well, my friends, it is now less than a week to my wedding–I can’t believe it. I am totally calm, I kid you not. Almost everything is done. Momma Puff and Puff Daddy are coming into town tonight, and they each have a short list of projects to help me out, but all the big things are DONE!
The one thing that has been a major lifesaver for me throughout this wedding process has been my Mad Crazy Skills of Organization. I am a Virgo and find organization infinitely amazing and loads of fun (the sick thing is that I’m totally not kidding!). Organizing all the details has actually been pretty entertaining for me, but also really helpful for all of our vendors.
First, I’d like to share with you what our house looks like right now. After that, I’ll get into my planning organization. Some of you might not find organization as thrilling as I do, so I expect that there will probably be about two comments on this post. But if this helps two people get better organized, I figure it’s worth the post. ![]()

On and off for the past 5 years, I have sold on e-bay as a second source of income. Besides selling for other people, I also scoured garage sales, estate sales, and flea markets for the perfect finds. The items need to be 1) cheaper than I would sell it for, 2) Light enough to conveniently ship, and 3) of my own personal taste in case I got stuck with it.
Also, to ensure I spent my time and gas wisely, I put a lot of thought into deciding which sales I would be visiting.
For the past 6 months, I haven’t really gone out because I’ve been so busy, but I decided to try my luck this weekend in hopes of finding decor for our wedding. The budget has been dwindling and I needed to start getting more creative.
And hive- I wish I had started sooner. Because I found so much great stuff at “Just what I need” prices.
Take a look at my weekend wedding finds. All were found at local garage sales and the grand total for everything came out to under $20. After the last picture, I’ve listed some advice on how to get the most out of garage sales for your own wedding finds. ![]()
