About Mrs. Shortcake

sc1

Thank you everyone for your kind comments on yesterday’s post! After going through the flames of one certain very hot place in order to get them finished, it meant a lot to have so many people love them as much as I did!

However, I totally did not finish that post, because I forgot one of my very favourite components of the invitation suite…

The envelope liners!

sc2

Like everything else in the suite, I made them myself, using a homemade template. To trace, cut and glue all of the outer envelope and inner envelope liners took over eight hours, so I’ll put a disclaimer on this DIY project - don’t attempt it unless you’re really, really into long hours of tedious work! :) Actually, that disclaimer can be applied to DIY-ing your invites in general!

SUPPLIES:

  • 12″ x 12″ scrapbook paper of your choice (each piece yields one large and one small envelope liner)
  • scissors and paper cutter
  • glue stick
  • a pencil
  • oodles of patience

sc3

HOW TO:

  1. Get a piece of stiff card stock or cardboard
  2. Trace the outline of one of your envelopes
  3. Take your paper cutter, and trim about 1/2 inch off of the left, right, and bottom sides (don’t touch the triangle top)
  4. Now that you have your template, use it to trace on your scrapbook (or wrapping, or any thin paper) paper
  5. Cut out your liner
  6. Apply glue to the edges of the TRIANGLE TOP ONLY (otherwise you won’t be able to stuff in the liner without swearing like a sailor and getting glue everywhere :)
  7. Slide the liner into your envelope, square side first, press to seal the glue-y triangle top to the triangle top of the envelope
  8. Rinse and repeat

Choosing coordinated liners really adds a little sumpin’ sumpin’ to invitations, I think. Which is why I chose fifteen different styles, to match with guest recipient’s personalities (fun, quirky, elegant, boring….*cough* just joking). I’m probably putting waaayy too much thought into them - just look how unimpressed Harvey is!

“pssssh what-evah, mama”

Oh, speaking of my men, Mr. Shortcake would like to point out that he measured, cut, and assembled all of the ribbons. He’s so chuffed :) If you want similar ribbons, check out Miss Emerald’s tutorial here!

So NOW you have it, ladies and gentlemen. The finished product.

Is anyone else making envelope liners?

You are totally insane for having DIY’ed these yourself, but I honestly think they are just the sweetest invitations I have ever seen. You should submit them for some kind of award!

Were they ALL individually hand drawn?? or 1 hand drawn and then copied??

The link for the ribbon takes you back to the printer post…is the link there?

Beautiful invites!

i *heart* envelope liners. we made our envelopes out of double-sided paper, so didn’t need to line them, so i ended up lining the envelopes for a set of notecards (part of the BM thank you gifts) and am seriously considering lining the thank-you card envelopes. :)

it’s wonderful that you picked so many different papers - it is so original and crafty!

Beautiful! Did you seal them a certain way so that people aren’t tempted to tear into them (by hand or envelope cutter) and open them so that they can actually see the lining? I’m curious to know. Thanks!!

Still amazing. I too diy’ed our envelope liners. and it took a considerable amount of time and some side glances from my mom and FI that totally meant I was doing to much. But I loved them.
Like, mdbride mentioned I am just so sad that I didn’t think of a cleaver way to seal the envelope so people won’t rip my little pretties!

Miss Shortcake - I wanted to send you a link to my wedding’s slideshow from my photographer’s website. I wore a mantilla - over my face (drop veil style). I also had a little bolero. My husband and I did a swing dance routine and I changed into a shorter ’50’s style dress. So, i have LOVED all of your ideas so far - and thought you might enjoy seeing some of the details of my wedding (just because we have some similar details and ideas).
