Save the Date, Spanx-Style

August 1st, 2008 @ 5:15 pm by Mrs. Magnolia

Atlanta resident (and undergarment savior to ladies everywhere) Sara Blakely is getting married! Per an article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution this morning, the Spanx founder is engaged to be married to Jesse Itzler, co-founder of Marquis Jets (and former rapper). The pair have rented out an entire resort in Boca Grande, FL for their October wedding, which I’m sure will be no small affair!

Stationery absolutely helps to set the tone for your wedding, and given that Save the Dates are generally the first formal contact that you have with your guests—how do we feel about this amazing creation?

I apologize for the poor quality of this picture - I snagged it off the AJC website, and I assume that this is a scanned version of the original!

The front of this 12-page bound booklet features sheet music for the song, “At Last” and an original image of the couple on a bicycle. Look closely, and you’ll see—the bride’s rockin’ some Spanx under her gown, of course!

I can only assume that the wealth of information available within this Save the Date includes much of the same info that other brides might include as invitation enclosures, or even on a wedding website: travel and lodging information, how to keep yourself busy while visiting Boca Grande, a schedule of events, etc.

The only clue we’re given to the contents, however, is this nugget from Blakely herself: “A friend just called me to say, ‘Your save the date card is a little like reading The Catcher in the Rye!’”

So, WB readers… what do you think? Is a 12-page booklet just a bit over-the-top for a Save the Date, or is it the perfect way to kick off what will surely be an extravagant affair to celebrate the union between two extremely successful people?

i’m of the opinion that no matter how much money you make, you should always try to remain on the tasteful side.

I agree, I think it is a waste of money. All those ppl could have retreived all that information off the a wedding website.

I don’t think it’s a waste of money. I’m doing something similar with our STDs. I’m not making a booklet, but mine are probably even bigger. I think it’s a cute idea and she is certainly not the first one to do it. Check out Ceci New York’s website. They’re everywhere on there. I’m doing detailed STDs because it’s a destination event and i want everybody to know what we have in store for them. I don’t get what people think is so bad about it? Some people think websites are tacky and impersonal.

If it’s a Destination Wedding - maybe. Guests would appreciate all the information in making their travel arrangements. Even so, 12 pages is excessive.

I LOVE it — and not in the I’ve-gotta-do-that-or-I’ll-feel-inferior way, but in a truly Wow! How much fun is that! way. And it’s obviously a gorgeous and personal representation of the couple.

I actually think it’s kind of cute. As a guest, I would find it fun to read– especially if it was well-written and filled with lots of clever stories and great tips. Then again, I’m a spendthrift :) And putting the info on a website would be much more earth-friendly.

Haha. Adorable illustration, but I think 12 pages is a bit excessive. Does make me realize I need to get my butt in gear on my save the dates, though.

P.S. It was exciting seeing a post from you!

I understand the desire to put together all that information for guests, especially for a destination wedding. But seriously– a 12-page booklet? It just seems wasteful to me. I’m having a DW and sending out postcards with a reference to our wedding website, which is pretty extensive.

On a side note, I bet I know what resort in Boca Grande they’ve booked. It is gorgeous there!

seeing their station in life, i’m wondering if they would even have a wedding website, even if they took precautions to keep it from coming up on search engines from the prying public. maybe this is their way of controlling what information gets out. in that case, i don’t see anything wrong seeing if what’s included is a website’s worth of information. the mayor of sf just got married last weekend and i doubt they put together a website.

now i wouldn’t go to that length even if i didn’t have a website but i’m also not having an elaborate fete either so to each their own! personally, i kinda like it.

You know…the booklet could be fairly small. All the ones I’ve seen have the size of a reply card…that would make the number of pages make sense.

Anyway, we’ve skipped over the important part of her post…the groom was a RAPPER? That guy? Was he in O-Town? ;)

Ha! I had the same reaction when I saw the pic–THAT guy, a rapper? Also, the booklet cost $4.80 each to mail–wow….. I think if they have the dough to afford it and the motivation to put it together, why not? To each her own. The cover illo with the Spanx bride is super-cute.

I don’t get the hate, either. Technically, you could put all your wedding information on your website and send out evites and say beautiful engraved or letterpress invitations are ‘tacky’ and a waste of money too. I think the booklet is adorable. :)

I sent out a pretty elaborate save the date that I made myself so that I could send the beautifully expensive letterpress invites I wanted without adding a “directions,” and “accomodations,” card. I know that a lot of my older guests simply do not have internet access or savvy so that stuff has to be put into writing at some point. She is a multimillionaire, let her spend her money how she wants. I am sure her guests all thought the booklet was super cute and informative. I also don’t think that the negativity against other brides is warranted, rich or poor. It is so hurtful. If I ever read something criticizing my upcoming wedding I would be devastated.
