About Mrs. Champagne

Anniversary-less

August 4th, 2008 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Champagne

If there is one thing that kind of bothers me about my relationship with Champ, it’s that we don’t have an official anniversary. I spoke about how we met, and I guess neither one of us really remembers the actual date. We never really had a first “date,” and who knows when our first kiss was. Is that bad? I wish I knew. I wish it was a moment I could remember so vividly I could author a romance novel about it. But it’s not. I know I enjoyed our first kiss and our first “date,” but I don’t have the faintest idea of when they occurred. We did take a trip to Naples, Florida for spring break during our sophomore year of college. We went to visit Champ’s grandfather, and we hadn’t really been dating for too long–probably 4 to 6 months or so. This was the first trip I’d ever taken with a boyfriend, and I was both excited and nervous for the experience.

We’d admitted that we loved each other, but our relationship was still in that phase where marriage hadn’t been the topic of any conversation. During this trip to Naples, I couldn’t help but want to casually tell Champ he was the one for me. We did so many memorable activities together and I could just tell that there was something different about this one. One of my most memorable events of the trip was our zoo outing. Champ has always been a big “zoo nerd.” He loves the animals (particularly the lions and bears) and asks me once a week if we can go to the zoo–it’s one of his quirks that makes him even more adorable.

Here we are at the Naples Zoo many many years ago:

So when we planned a vacation 5 years later around the same time, I told Champ that Naples was really the place I fell in love with him. Now, I’m not gonna lie–I had been dropping some subtle hints about the possibility of us getting engaged for quite some time. In fact, I’m fairly certain I sent a picture of a ring I thought was perfect (yeah, maybe not so subtle). Champ tells me now that he wasn’t bothered because he had our engagement long planned before my silly hints. He had scheduled a 5 year follow up vacation in Naples!

Here we are, same place, five years later… total geeks! :)

More to follow about this vacation, but two things before I bid adieu:

What sort of subtle hints did you give your man? Do you have an anniversary or will you, like us, establish a true anniversary on your wedding day?

Our first date anniversary is on July 31st and since we met on a blind date, I feel that is the true beginning to our relationship.

But now that we are married, my husband insists on having June 7 as our only anniversary. I told him this past 7/31 that without a July 31, 2004 there would be no June 7, 2008. He said that made him smile.

My guy and I graduated high school together but never began any type of relationship until I had gone away to college. Not wanting to start a long distance relationship we waited until I came home for summer even though everytime I came home for a visit.. we ended up spending time together. We just kind of decided our anniversary would be May 15 even though we had been “dating” months before that.

We will be married October 11 then we can have our first REAL anniversary!

I believe my ’subtle hint’ was that I was getting married on 09-08-07 with or without him. ;)

We remember every little detail so uber-ridiculously that we have like 12 anniversaries, I swear.

Day we met - 5/26
First “hang out” - 6/7
First “hang out” after we’d decided we were interested in each other - 9/9
First “date” - 9/10
First kiss, second date - 9/17
Date he proposed - 8/31

And we’ll marry on 8/31, exactly 366 (b/c of the leap year) after he proposed. So, I’m thinking after we’re married, we’ll celebrate only that one for reals…

People get full blown mad when I say my bf and I don’t have an anniversary. Or I can’t really answer them when they ask us how long we’ve been together. MAD. It doesn’t bother us much and we don’t have to force an annual celebration, but I do like excuses to buy presents. We did move in together on a specific date so maybe I can hijack that date as some sort of milestone.

My Hubby and I can’t remember the exact date we were officially dating so we just picked a random date in that month. :) The funny thing is when we got engaged we decided that we would celebrate that as our “anniv” and a year later we both forgot the date. LOL We have such a great time ALL the time that I don’t really think that the “Anniv” is necessary, but now that we’re married I’m sure we’ll celebrate it with out forgetting (06.07.08).

P.S Those Zoo pics super cute. :)

@Michelle Congrats on getting married! I got married on that same day.

@ProBM2008: I completely understand. . . my fiance and I have no idea when we started “dating” because we knew each other so long before then. He works for an airline, and while he was training in Minneapolis, I got a text message from him that says “Don’t be mad, but when is our anniversary?” He needed to put one down so he could register me as his “domestic partner” so I’d have free flight benefits. I sent a reply telling him I wasn’t mad at all. I had no idea either. So we just randomly picked a date around the time we started hanging out and called it a day.
I do, however, remember the date he proposed - April 23rd. We’ll marry 367 days after he proposed, and we’ll be at the same place.

I donate my hair every 3 years, and wanted long hair when I get married, so I said we need to either get married in 2009 or in 2012, and I doubt I’ll wait that long…he knew I was joking, even though it was somewhat serious…

First date Feb 21 2005, Wedding Date Feb 21 2009…exactly 4 years later…

We met on Feb 7th and we were celebrating the 7th as our anniversary until we realized that “people normally” celebrate the actual first date, so we kinda switched our anniversary.

First official date 9/9/06
Engaged 10/9/08

I was very careful not to give hints other than when our old roommate and I looked at jewelr in magaziens I would make sure to say at least twice that I didn’t like diamonds. He is actually the one who left hints. Things like your brother can meet the family at the wedding. Or that he always thinks of me when this song about weddings comes on the radio (this has since become our song). Because he was know for being very phobic about marriage and commitment I was very careful notto bring it up. He was later shocked that I wasn’t surprised that he asked me. I don’t think he even realized he was dropping hints. :-P

I think I made up our dating anniversary, as the day we met. I only remembered it because it was the day before St. Patrick’s Day. We met at a party at my house. We went out a few times with other people and then went on our first official date and I never thought to mark it down on a calendar. We continued to date exclusively and I didn’t think about how one does decide their anniversary so we just decided to celebrate the day we met, since we’ve been together ever since. I like the idea of having a true anniversary, but I think I will still love March 16th just as much. :)

Fortunately, we have a direct record of the day we met - I still have the emails that we used to plan our date, as well as lots of photos!

I have a wedding date which is the same as my birthday. Now that we’re renewing our vows on what would have been my grandparents 63rd anniversary we’re going to celebrate that date as our anniversary too.

there’s a date, mr.GT wrote it down somewhere and i’m the one who always forgets. his buddies are envious that he has a fiance who doesn’t remember, for whatever reason he himself is not real thrilled about it. :P

My FI and I have a relaxed anniversary date. :) We were friends for a while before we dated, then attempted dating and decided against it, but then eventually started dating again not too long after. Needless to say, our first official date was never really recorded. While discussing our anniversary situation one day, FI decided that we should celebrate our anniversary on whatever day our college football team plays LSU, because that’s around the time that he remembers us being official. (Leave it to a man… :P ) And so it stuck! We’ll be celebrating 4 years together when Florida plays LSU in the beginning of October, but I’m looking forward to having a “real” anniversary date once we get married on June 27th of next year. :)

Although I’m usually the super-organized, date-obsessed one, for some crazy reason I always have a hard time remember our ‘anniversary’ (the day we kissed). It’s in November sometime though. Awful, I know!

The Perfect Vacation! » Weddingbee » The Wedding Blog

[...] As I mentioned earlier, the trip to Naples with Champ our sophomore year of college was where I really fell in love with my best friend. So it only seemed fitting that five years later we would visit the same spots, swim at the same beach, and enjoy the same company we had enjoyed so much before. When Mr. C asked if I would be interested in heading back to Naples, my heart fluttered a little in hope that this would be “THE vacation.” As I also mentioned earlier, I had been throwing some serious hints to Mr. C about our future together, so I knew it had to be on his mind at least a little. So off we went to Naples! [...]

We’re getting married exactly 5 years after we the day we met. So, it will be just one date for both an anniversary of when we met/started dating and our wedding anniverary.
