OOT Bags

August 6th, 2008 @ 3:25 pm by Mrs. Lovebird

Considering all of our 90+ guests were all flying to Cancun for our wedding, we knew our OOT bags were not going to be an easy task.

First off, we had to decide on how big we actually wanted to make these babies, keeping in mind that we would have to transport them all the way down to Mexico. Initially, I was all about the canvas totes; then I realized we would have a hard time trying to fill them all considering we are staying at an all-inclusive resort. Bottles of water and anything your heart desires to drink is provided for at the resort. Not to mention there was no way in hell I was transporting bottles of water to Mexico! The resort is also all you can eat, so there was no need to load them with too many snacks. The hotel also provided all the toiletries you could ever need, including sunblock so we were left with only a few options.

I must have spent weeks deciding on which bags to buy. I eventually settled on these 7 1/4″ x 2″ x 7″ foam bags from Oriental Trading. I was expecting something more, but they served their purpose.  There was no way we were bringing 90+ bags to Cancun, so I decided on getting 3 dozen bags. It came out to about one per family/room.

Then I went to BJ’s and picked up a huge bag of Wonka candy, a box of Chicklets gum, Goldfish crackers and strawberry flavored Goldfish animal crackers.

I also picked up tissue paper packets from the local pharmacy and little bottles of Purell (not pictured) from Staples. These items filled out the bags rather nicely. Then as an added bonus, each bag came with a Sudoku book. While I was beechatting on BeeTV, one of my fellow bees linked me to ebay seller Wildwood Enterprises and I bought them on the spot. I figured they could use them in case they get bored on the beach or on their flights back home. But keep in mind, books are heavy!

There was one more item we gave out with the OOT bags, but it deserves its own post, so stay tuned!

Here they are! All packed and ready to go. I had one luggage dedicated solely for our OOT bags. My parents thought I was crazy.

Tip for Destination Brides: I’m sure you are well aware, but it is crucial that you find out the baggage allowances for your airline in advance and weigh your luggage before you get to the airport. You don’t want to be factoring in overweight luggage fines as an unexpected wedding cost.

Will you be doing OOT bags for your OOT guests? What are you including in them?

I can’t believe you traveled all that way with the OOT bags! I hope your guests appreciated it! I’m doing OOT bags - paper shopping bags with snacks and water and some brochures. Nothing too fancy.

This is an homage to us destination wedding brides. Like Miss Sweet Tea, I’m doing a “mini” destination wedding, so everything in terms of luggage needs to be CAREFULLY planned!

We’re doing OOT bags - I’m going to go to Costco in our wedding city and fill it with things like apple cider, a book about things to do in the city, a city map, and some other nibblies.

Are the foam bags really not that great? I’m doing OOT bags for 80 of my guests. Luckily we’re on a cruise out of NYC my hometown so I’m limited to 6 luggages per person. I’m filling them with sunblock, chapstick, loofahs, bodywash, aleve, purell and some other goodies. Your bags are exactly the wedding color I’m going for.

@MonkeyGirl: I think I was just silly to expect more, especially for that great price! They were a little smaller than I expected, so just make sure to measure it out. If you come to the NYC Meetup this Friday I’ll bring one for you to see! Let me know.

I’m having a destination wedding in Hawaii (I live on the east coast) so I’m filling my OOT bags with Hawaii treats (I used to live there, so I know all the goodies). ie. Hawaiian sun drink, li hing mui, macadamian nuts, travel guides, tylenol, etc. I do have a few guests that live in Hawaii, so for them I’m making them bags with PA treats (whoopie pies, utz chips, Hershey candies, etc.). Just puttin’ them in gable boxes.

Ohhh..I forgot, I’m also putting 2 pre-stamped postcards in each bag so they can mail us a postcard telling us their favorite part of the trip and one for them to keep or mail to a friend.

Great bags, Mrs Lovebird!! I hear you on not wanting to lug all sorts of yummies across the continent. I’d love to know your guests’ reactions to the bag! Mr SB doesn’t seem to think they are necessary at ALL whereas obviously I have a different opinion. Anything that you would have added to them, in hindsight?

The tissue packets are definitely a great addition to OOT bags. I found some online for my cousin that are made especially for weddings. They cost about twice what a regular kleenex pack costs, but they’re way cuter because they come in wedding-specific designs and don’t have any company information printed on them. I think I found them by searching google for “wedding tissues”. I’m getting the ones with love written in different languages since there will be people at the wedding from all over….

I too am traveling with OOT bags. My wedding is at an all inclusive resort in the Bahamas. I am buying reuseable grocery bags from cheaptotes.com. I am filling them with flip flops from OldNavy, brochures of things to do in the Bahamas, and personalized sunscreen.
