The Verdict Is In!

August 6th, 2008 @ 6:24 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

We’ve chosen our Minimoon adventure: Big City Fun in Portland!

z158897
The Deluxe Hotel in Portland, Oregon.

We’ll be staying at the Deluxe Hotel, a 1940’s Hollywood style boutique hotel in downtown Portland. It so happens to be situated right in front of Portland’s awesomely convenient Max Light Rail that will take us directly from airport to hotel. This means I will be able to shop like crazy without having to worry about lugging bags around, hailing cabs or renting a car.

The hallways are all lines with photos of Hollywood starlets.

We also managed to snag the coveted Marlene Dietrich Suite, with its crazy circular bed - no, it doesn’t rotate or vibrate! The only real complaint that I’ve found about this hotel is regarding the room size and I don’t think we’ll have a problem here. I’m super excited about the on site dining and bar options - specifically the Driftwood Room, as it’s sooo retro cool.

While we’re here in Portland, we’ll most definitely be checking out Powell’s Books, strolling through a few of the many cultural gardens, shopping and eating our way across the Pearl District, and we’ll most definitely be seeing Sigur Ros live on the Monday night following the wedding. Mr. Pomegranate managed to snag us tickets only two rows back!

Look how close we are to the stage! I’m so excited!

Ticketmaster.

I’m ramping up my Portland research to find other fun things to do while we’re in town. Luckily, Hotel Deluxe even has their own blog - On the Set. It’s been a great resource for all the fun things most tourists don’t know about, like Flicks on Bricks and fun festivals like the Oregon Brewfest (sadly, this is not scheduled for the dates we’re in town).

Do any Portland local readers have any fun recommendations for Mr. Pom and I on our minimoon adventure in early October?

There’s also an awesome new tapas bar called Toro Bravo, and if you want a relaxing afternoon, head over to the chinese garden (built by sister city Suzhou, China) - http://www.portlandchinesegarden.org/
There’s even a Tao of Tea on the inside, so you can relax with tea, and eat their to-die-for taro moon cakes!

I love Portland!

Papa Haydn…the desserts are to die-for! I would kill to have them do my wedding cake. And it is in cool NW 23rd neighborhood to shop off the calories (or get a new wardrobe).
http://www.papahaydn.com/

Ditto on the Heathman for a meal…the retro cocktails at the bar are great, too!

For a great gourmet meal that is based on local and sustainable foods, go to Higgins
http://higgins.ypguides.net/ . And don’t be distracted by the limited menu…the daily specials are what really shine!

How fun! I live in Portland! I definitely suggest voodoo doughnuts - it’s not that scary. People get married there! Powell’s, great and touristy, go up to NW 23rd, go to Marrakesh for dinner, hit up Laurelwood Brewery on NW 23rd for dinner. Find a McMenamin’s - there’s a million! Ride the OHSU tram maybe? It’s like a little bullet in the sky! Walk along the waterfront (during the day), if you’re renting a car go out to Sauvie Island and buy some local produce, drive out to the scenic Columbia Gorge and Multnomah Falls, or visit Mt. Hood and Timberline Lodge (the outside of the bldg was used in “The Shining”). Go to breakfast at Cup and Saucer, visit Hawthorne district. If you like live music, go see some local bands - there’s tons of great live music around town. The Doug Fir is a fun venue and has a great bar. Downtown close to where you are staying, you can go to The Bitter End which always has fun bands. Visit the Widmer Brewery, or all the fun restaurants and stores on Mississippi Ave, or Alberta in NE Portland. There’s also great neighborhoods in SE. Lots to see and do - let me know if you need more help!

Definitely Powells & NW 23rd. The Hawthorne is great - the second run theater features beer & pizza at bargain basement prices. Second the rec for Cup & Saucer. Doug Fir is a fun time, definitely retro funky.

Other food places:
Pambiche - delish cuban
Screen Door - breakfast deliciousness with a southern twist

I live in Portland also, and think you made a great choice!! We stayed at the Hotel Deluxe the night of our wedding (3 weeks ago) and it was amazing! Definitely let them know it is your honeymoon!

As far as things to do, if you decide to rent a car I second that you should go check out the Columbia Gorge and Multnomah Falls. Another thing that we’re known for is wine! You could plan a wine tasting tour to many outstanding vineyards. (Around Newburg or out in Carlton)

If you’re not renting a car, no worries, as there is tons to do close to you. There are lots of great breweries to check out (Deschutes, Bridgeport, Mcmenamins..). Excellent shopping on NW 23rd, SE Hawthorne, or in the Pearl. Not sure when you’re coming, but if you happen to get here for the first Thursday in October, you should go out in the Pearl for First Thursday, which is where galleries open up to tour all the art, with wine, food, sometimes music….tons of fun and lots of good people watching!!

Food:
Mothers-yummy breakfast
Masu-amazing sushi
Saint Cupcake-best cupcakes ever
Stumptown-best coffee

I could go on and on…let me know if you have questions or need any help!

I’m not from Portland, I’m on the other end of Oregon, in Medford, but I’ve been up to Portland more times than I can count. I definately recommend checking out Powell’s books! It’s amazing. Also make sure to visit Nob Hill, up on 23rd and 24th. All of the little boutiques are amazing. While you’re there, make sure to visit Pizzacato’s Gourmet Pizzaria. While it doesn’t sound like pizza could be that great, it’s simply amazing. And don’t forget the salad. They have a great pear & walnut salad that is to die for. And don’t forget to get some great gelato down the street. There’s a few shops, and any one of them will make a great pick. I’ve never had any that I don’t like.

Have you ever been to Portland before?

As a former Portlander, I second the Papa Haydn recommendation…YUM. You should also check out the Doug Fir Lounge on the east side, off of Burnside. It’s a funky lounge/restaurant with beautiful wood siding and Northwest food specialties. However, the Max does not run close by it, so you may need to take a cab from your hotel. Check out mcmenamins.com to find one of their pub/movie theaters. (You can drink beer and watch a movie!) Finally, you can get some great shopping in at Pioneer Courthouse Square smack dab in downtown.

Yay! I work in the Pearl District and think this is such a fun area to hang around. There are restaurants and coffee shops everywhere! Oba has the best happy hour, check them out! And stop by Washington Park and the Rose Gardens! Such a fun place for a picnic :)

I lived in Portland for years before we moved down to Sacto…and miss it every single day. Ho hum.

I definitely second Pambiche (amazing coconut fish!), Saint Cupcake, and Stumptown. If you are in Hawthorne, Chez Machin has fantastic crepes. The Pied Cow has great lavender steamed milk–totally delicious if it is chilly while you’re there. Bernie’s Southern Bistro has good Southern food, po’boys and fried green tomatoes, yum! Le Bistro Montage has delish varieties of macaroni and cheese. Mint has a nice happy hour, as does Bartini (cheap martinis and fondue for happy hour=one happy girl). St Honere Bakery is wonderful–we would go watch the Tour de France there and eat delicious bread type items. :) Andina is yum if you like Peruvian, Piazza Italia if you like Italian (you MUST order their lasagna if they have it–to die for, I swear. I have dreams about it.), and Alexis for Greek. The first place I go to eat whenever I am in Portland now is Alexis. I plan our vacations with that on the schedule, I love it that much. Oh! And the Berlin Inn–German food, great fondue and this completely wonderful apricot cappuccino cake thing. If you go there, try to get Lisa as your waitress if she is still working there–she is awesome.

And for dessert, my personal favorite is Pix. Completely amazing pastries and truffles (the Amelie and the Caramel Poire are my go-to’s) and they are open until midnight or 2am every night. Sahagun is wonderful also for truffles(and is cute and tiny), or hit Cacao for a large variety of chocolate bars. Staccato Gelato is my fav for ice cream; bonus that it is only a couple of blocks from the Laurelhurst.

Laurelhurst theater is our favorite in the city; we would go often–$7 for a movie, a pint and a bag of popcorn. Washington Park is also fantastic–definitely go to the Rose garden, it has unbelievable views of the city/Mt Hood. The Vista House on the Columbia River is also amazing for views.

Shopping and all that–Northwest 21st/23rd, Hawthorne, the Pearl, NE Alberta/N Mississippi are all good. Sellwood had some nice little shops when I lived in PDX. Go to New Seasons if you need groceries (like for a picnic?).

Sigh. Can you tell I miss it?

All the places I mentioned you will be able to find on Portland City Search, though you would probably need a couple weeks to do it all. :) Have fun! Portland is such a great city!

I almost forgot!
There’s an awesome french boulangerie (read: FAB LUNCH!) in the “alphabet” district (it’s on Thurman).
http://www.sainthonorebakery.com/
Saint Honore Bakery! You should get the Brie Bartlett sammy - Panini roll drizzled with olive oil and Balsamic, layered with Proscuitto, Brie, caramelized Bartlett pears and onions, Arugala.

I live in Portland too! You picked a fantastic place to stay. Only one room has the round bed, so make sure you’ve got that on reserve if that’s what you’re wanting. If it’s a deal-breaker, I highly recommend the Hotel Vintage Plaza.

Here’s some restaurants that I highly recommend: LePigon, Toro Brovo, Clark Lewis and desert Pix Patisserie.

For cocktails check out Tear Drop Lounge (but don’t go there after 8, that’s when it turns into a meat market) They make their own tonics & bitters. The best cocktail I’ve had in my life is called Bella De something. It has habanero bitters and a SMOKED PEAR CHIP.
If you enjoy wine, the Urban Cellars is pretty fun. You can create your own wine by the bottle there.

To all you Portland Ladies, we need to get together and talk weddings! I just secured my date in Astoria

Okay, you guys are AMAZING! I am going to have to compile this all into a little list to take with me. We’re going to have WAY too much to do in one trip - I’ll have to come back. ;)

@Mandalynn: Yes, it’s MY first time - but Mr. Pom has been to Portland before.

I’m so excited! We’ve booked the room, bought the tickets and are ready to go!

Yea!! Fall in Portland is Beautiful! I also recommend Pambiche. We ordered our wedding cake there. It was delish!

The Farm on Burnside is also one of my favorite restaurants. I also second Higgins.

There is a limo that will pick you up downtown and take you to several wineries. The wine country in Oregon is beautiful.

I also highly recommend checking out Edgefield. It is a really cool place and a must-do!

Enjoy my wonderful city! Oh and I also stayed at the Hotel Deluxe for my wedding night. The corner rooms are huge! You will love it!
