Maiden Sidekicks

August 7th, 2008 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Sea Breeze

I thought I’d tell you the story of how my bridesmaids came to be.

Source

Before I got engaged, I really hadn’t spent a lot of time envisioning the wedding of my dreams. Instead, I put that energy to use envisioning the MAN of my dreams (and it worked!).

I had no clue as to location, colors, theme, invitations, flowers, seat covers, favors or any other of the 1,001 things that brides obsess about (or so I’ve recently discovered). The only thing I had really thought about was my bridesmaids. I was a bridesmaid twice (and no, I didn’t hold off doing it again because of the whole ‘three times a bridesmaid…’ deal, though I’m kinda glad it worked out that way), and although I loved the shopping and fussing and being in the spotlight on their special days, I realized that my being there didn’t really make much of a difference. Oh sure, I helped one bride fix her makeup and I think I may have held her dress while she peed, but overall, I didn’t really see the point of being a bridesmaid. I was in the pictures and sat at the head table and had to buy—in the first instance— a really, really hideous dress. That was pretty much it.

That led me to the conviction that when my wedding day rolled around, I’d only have one bridesmaid. I was pretty confident she’d be able to sign the papers and be my personal assistant all on her own, especially since the lucky gal would be none other than my cousin and best friend—we’ll call her Pepperpot.

After we got engaged, I asked Mr. Sea Breeze one evening who he thought he might have for his groomsman/men. I was totally ok with the idea of having a mismatched wedding party, i.e. more on one side than on the other, but I was unprepared for his answer a couple weeks later (apparently he hadn’t ever considered it, either). He said that he thought it would be eight or nine guys.

Eight or nine groomsmen to my one bridesmaid??? Ok, that’s a bit ridiculous.

So then for the first time I started thinking about who I’d want to be my bridesmaids if I could have more than one.

My best friend Miss P was an easy choice. We’ve been pals since that fateful day in University almost 10 years ago (OMG, has it been that long?) when she came up to me after class and asked, “Hi. Are you Polish?” to which I replied, “Erm… yes,” and she grinned and exclaimed, “Great! Can I borrow your notes?” Our similarities, we soon discovered, extended well beyond our blonde hair and atrociously spelled last names, and we’ve been bosom friends ever since.

The others were harder. Although I’ve had many girlfriends over the years, the fact that I’ve moved around quite a bit means that most of them, sadly, haven’t survived. The ones that have are great but not close enough to me to consider them as bridesmaids, I’d say. Truthfully, my best friends are people in my family. I’m incredibly lucky that my little brother married a totally awesome girl three years ago, and I’m even more lucky to be marrying a man whose two sisters are spectacularly great.

So my other choices for bridesmaids would naturally be the three of them. Since by the time we get married, one sister-in-law will have a one-and-a-half year old to take care of and another will have a three-year-old and brand new baby, that left the other sister-in-law.

And that’s my half of our lovely wedding party! I couldn’t be happier.

Well, except for one thing. Each of us lives in a different city—me in Vancouver, Miss P in Calgary, Pepperpot in Toronto and SIL in New York! I didn’t think it would be such a bummer until I got to the part where I started agonizing over gown, shoe, and bridesmaid dress choices.

I love my maids and can’t wait to share the day with them. For the record, Mr. SB narrowed his fellas down to three so we’ll be a balanced looking bunch after all.

How did you go about picking your bridesmaids?

I had a very similar problem. I really only have one female friend up here, and I ended up going back to 2 girlfriends I grew up with - I couldn’t be happier!

When I picked them, I also thought about how they would work as a unit. My MOH is the best organizer/cheerleader out of the bunch, one BM is the only local and can help me here, and the other BM is the expert BM and has been a huge help to the MOH. It’s worked out great thus far!

I had something similar. I had 3 gals in mind, and only the 3. My fiance’ had…8. That was a little too unbalanced for me. So now, all my closest friends are bridesmaids, and I’ve come around to the idea that the more, the merrier. :)

I only had 4 girls in mind, whereas FI had 7. We ended up having “matching” numbers and made 2 of the guys ushers and one of the guys our officiant… so it all worked out in the end!

I had a similar situation..moved around a lot and while I am in touch with some, I am not close enough to them or didn’t want to ask then to pay for a flight here and a dress! So, I picked my closest gf here for MOH and my SIL for another, my cousin and to round it out one of my FH friends girlfriend. The Friends girlfriend turned out to be the best one so far!! She is a really cool girl…I became friends with her while dating FH. And I thought it was fair to ask her since I stole one of my FH groomsmen spots with my brother.

I have three sisters, so they were automatic. Then, my best friend is hubby’s twin sister, so she was an obvious choice for maid of honor. Then I added a close family friend and a friend from college to round us out at 6.

@Becky: Were any of your sisters irritated they weren’t “chosen” to be MOH? I have 2 very close friends from college, 1 younger sister, another good friend from college, and my FH’s 2 sisters on my roster. That makes 6 total. My younger sister doesn’t really know me that well (even though she’s only 2 years younger than me), so I felt uncomfortable making her the MOH - she also just got out of a really horrible relationship. My 2 close friends from college were natural choices for double-MOH-duty, but when my sister found out she wasn’t going to be MOH, she was really pissed. I don’t get it! Since when is it expected the sister -has- to be the MOH, especially when you’re closer to your friends?

I too have moved around a lot, which has caused some friends to fade away, so I completely understand. I am fortunate enough to be close with one girl from each place, but that also means that no two bridesmaids live in the same state! There’s Baltimore, Denver, Chicago, LA and Philly! It’s going to be interested getting them all coordinated!

I have the same problem too! I lived in Vancouver when we picked the Venue, but then I moved to Seattle later, so I have to do everything remotely!

Fortunately my bridesmaids are in Vancouver, expect my cousin who will be flying from Asia a week before. Only 2 of the Groomsmen lives in Vancouver though, the rest are all over places, Montreal, Toronto and Seattle.

One of our original bridesmaid and groomsman were not able to make it due to business trip….that really sucks!

We end up having 10 groomsman and 5 bridesmaid…….hehe

We ended up perfectly matched in numbers without even trying. I chose my sister (Maid of Honor) and best friend of 25 years (Matron of Honor), Mr. Y’s SIL (who he’s known for so long he just calls her his sister), and my cousin/former roomie who is married to one of Mr. Y’s best friends and is who we met through.

Mr. Y chose his brother, 2 best friends (who he’s known since childhood), and my brother.
