About Miss Sweet Tea

Mom’s The Word

August 7th, 2008 @ 4:50 pm by Miss Sweet Tea

One thing that was definitely on the to-do list while in New Orleans was finding my mother a dress for the wedding. Finding a dress for Mama ST was imperative because

1. She hasn’t seen my dress or knows what colors we are using
2. I didn’t want her looking too matronly, since she’s younger and has fun with clothes
3. But I didn’t want her having so much fun it would look like a hot mess!

I love my mom, but let’s just say her clothing style is very hit-or-miss. As we don’t live anywhere near each other, it was either do it now or do it never. If Mama ST knew how to turn on a computer, I would’ve loved to just send her some photos of ideas and have her pick her own dress that she liked. That not being possible (she refuses to learn, I tell ya!), it was a whirlwind afternoon of dress shopping with Mama ST.

Since we had only one afternoon to make a decision, we stuck to department stores and boutiques rather than NOLA bridal boutiques- plus, she doesn’t live in New Orleans so coming back for fittings and stuff would be a hassle. An off-the-rack dress was the best solution for us, for both convenience and budgetary reasons.

Here were some of the contenders from Dillard’s:

A two-piece champagne dress that was too ruffly up top to work; a top that actually photographed well but was much too big on her; a long dress that made us both realize cocktail length was best; a chic little black and white cocktail dress that I loved, but that Mama ST wasn’t feeling.

Mama ST had already found her dress at this point (the first one she tried on!), but we hit up White House Black Market anyway just to comparison shop. After all, they are the go-to folks for black-and-white dresses, the exact colors we wanted for Mama St’s dress!

This is the only dress she let me take a picture of her in:

Adorable, but a little less sophisticated than what we wanted.

I wanted to keep going, but as Mama ST was convinced her dress was the one she saw at Dillard’s, we trekked back to that end of the mall and purchased it. It’s a cocktail length Adrianna Papell dress that is quite slimming; has an interesting cut but is not too trendy; and has a little more modesty coverage that is appropriate for Mama ST.

Here it is on the model (in a different color, natch):

And here it is on Mama ST:

Dillard’s had a large collection of Adrianna Papell dresses in a rainbow of colors- I actually think some of these would be cute as bridesmaids dresses. And their cost is pretty reasonable, too. And if Mama ST finds something she likes better, she can always return it to a Dillard’s in her hometown with little worries. I feel pretty good about the whole thing, even though I know she would be beautiful no matter what she wore!

What do you think of Mama St’s choice? Are any of your mothers going the cocktail dress route?

I really don’t like most “MOB-style” dresses, and I don’t think they’ll flatter my mother at all. Unfortunately, she has this idea that she should be wearing one, and I’m trying really hard to convince her that she should find some off-the-rack dress that makes her look like a million bucks. When we were dress shopping for me the other day, she picked up a MOB dress that looked like someone cut holes in a potato sack for the head and arms, complete with gaudy beaded jacket, ugh! I’m really hoping I can get her to go the route your mother is going, Miss Sweet Tea.

My Mom has that exact same dress!!! And she LOOOVES it. Even at the end of the night she’s comfortable and it fits her well and its uber flattering. I don’t think she’ll wear it for my wedding just because shes worn it before and my wedding means an excuse to buy a new dress! I think your mom made a great choice!

It’s fab! And she will so be able to wear it again and again, she should totally keep it even if she finds something else for your wedding day.

My mom is also considering an Adrianna Papell dress from Dillard’s! Tell your mom — only 30 days to return with them. And, she looked great!

Who makes the first champagne dress? I know you said it was too ruffley, but I think it’s cute!

@Carly: I actually didn’t mind the dress so much, but it’s also a similar color and the skirt a similar cut to my wedding dress! Didn’t want me and Mama looking too similar ;) Sorry, I didn’t remember to write down who made this- maybe they have it on the Dillard’s website?

I absolutely love this dress! I bought it in gold for my mother for her MOB dress. Unfortunately, she wasn’t feeling too fab-looking in it. I was so sad. There was even a time when I wanted to make it my bridesmaid dress. My MOH put her foot down and reminded me she wasn’t in her 40’s! I just think this is such a lovely dress. Good choice for your mom. They also have a longer version with a bolero. My mom did like that one but chop it off for a cocktail length.

My mom wore that exact dress in the same color on the model (i think) to my wedding. She looked wonderful and it was an extremely comfortable dress. She was able to dance the night away! She highly recommends it!

My mum will be going the cocktail route too - they’re so much more flattering!

Ahh.. Miss ST!! I went dress shopping with my mom this weekend too - and she tried on that same dress in Champagne at Macys!! Sadly it didn’t make the cut, but it was my #1 choice of everything she tried on! I think your mom looks great! I’m a huge fan of the Mom in a Cocktail dress look - our mom’s just aren’t ‘matronly’ enough to pull off the typical mother of the bride looks!
