Sentimental Things

August 7th, 2008 @ 3:35 pm by Mrs. Sundae

This photo is of my parents on their wedding day, over 40 years ago. This is one of my very favorite pictures of them not only because they’re adorable, but because it says so much. My Mom is beautiful in her short lace dress and my Dad, in a final act of defiance, has his pants tucked into his boots.

Cracks me up! My Mom and Grandma really wanted him to wear his uniform despite his protests, so he did it in his own way. Classic. But the point to all of this is to show you that my Mom recently cleaned her dress and cut a panel of the lace off of it for me:

I really didn’t expect her to just cut it (seriously took me by surprise) but the dress is still mostly intact and now I have this beautiful piece of lace. We initially attempted to sew it onto the bottom of my veil, but the white just didn’t look right next to my ivory dress. So, instead, I am thinking of wrapping it around my bouquet and carrying it down the aisle along with these beauties:

The brooch is my Great Grandmother’s and the beautiful pin is my Great Great Grandmother’s. The gold earring is from a set of my Grandma’s… they were given to her by my Grandpa and each of her three daughters wore them when they were married (my Mom included). So my cousin and I split them up and each took one, one of which I tied to my cousin’s bouquet when she was married in May. I can’t quite decide what to do with all of these beautiful things but the history attached to them means so much to me that I want to use them all! I am thinking of wearing the silver pin in my hair somehow, putting the brooch on my bouquet, and pinning the earring to the inside of my dress. Or perhaps pinning the brooch onto the handkerchief my Aunt made me and the earring onto my bouquet. I just can’t decide! I took another picture of the pin on it’s own so you can see some of the detail - it’s so delicate:

Are you incorporating any heirlooms into your wedding attire?

Your mom was such a lovely bride. She looked so beautiful and stylish. I love that you’re using a bit of the lace in your bouquet!

We didn’t have any heirlooms for me to use so we made one of our own! My mom had a handkerchief stiched for me with Mr. J and I’s names and wedding date in the corner. I pinned it to the inside of my lehnga. I hope to pass it on to a daughter someday and she can embroider it with her own name and wedding date!

So pretty - your mom looked absolutely gorgeous - so stylish and sophisticated. I love the idea of wearing the pin in your hair - beautiful!

My mom gave me a piece of my grandmother’s ivory satin and lace dress, to use in wrapping my bouquet. I still need something borrowed, so am thinking of asking my mom if I can use her original wedding band (she’s since upgraded) tied to my bouquet.

How touching! My MIL has thought of maybe cutting her dress and turning it into christening clothes. Of course, there would have to be a grandbaby in the works for that, which is NOT the case. Yet.

Haha, your dad cracks me up! When you look at my parents wedding pictures, daddy has on this light blue suit, absolutly brilliant royal blue tie, to which he insisted that his socks match. My sister and I just love it. You can only see his socks when he is sitting down, eating.

I love the photo of your parents and I love the idea of wrapping the lace around your bouquet. I think it is the perfect touch of tradition and sentimentalism.

that filigree pin is GORGEOUS! I mean, the rhinestone one is, too, and I love the earring idea. My grandmother’s engagement ring and wedding ring were mine to wear, as well as a rhinestone and garnet bracelet set in chrome (from the 40’s). I loved incorporating those historic elements in my modern wedding.

Ohhh so pretty! (Hi I just started reading!) I have a couple heirlooms I’m going to incorporate. My engagement ring was made by my fiancee’s great great grandfather for his bride, so there’s that, and my grandmother gave me the most beautiful necklace that has been passed down for as long as anyone knows. It is so precious I’m always afraid to wear it, but I think it will be perfect for my wedding day!

I love the lace and the picture of your parents is too adorable! I hope it will be displayed somewhere at your own wedding.

I am going to be wearing a pair of diamond earrings that have been passed down 4 generations to the oldest daughter in each family as my “something old.”

Oh my goodness everythings so pretty and dainty. The lace made me “aww” the most.

I wish I had even a picture of a grand mother, nevermind heirlooms.

Aaaanyways, my parents were married 46 years before they divorced. True story. You can’t make that stuff up,

It got really, REALLY nasty but for as long as I can remember my mom said she would give me her band. It has 5 little diamonds which I’m having set into a custom band by a STELLAR family jewler in the Bowery (NYC). The diamonds are about 51 years old at this point. The band itself is much newer. I’m gonna make a charm with it and give back to her.

That’s my own little “aww”
