Miss Champagne, DC/Vail/Colorado Age and Occupation: 26, Eye Doctor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Attorney Engagement Date: March 13, 2006 Wedding Date: February 2009 Blogging Since: July 30, 2008 Venue: Small church ceremony with mountain-view log cabin reception About Me: I'm a small town mountain girl with a city heart. Found my way to the east coast, and Mr. Champagne kept me here so we're planning a wedding from afar in my hometown Vail, Colorado. I'm secretly obsessed with reality TV, Wii games where I can shoot a gun, country music, and Caesar: Dog Whisperer. I also spend time pretending to golf, backseat driving, having one way conversations with our MinPin Maxwell, loving champagne, and wedding perfecting… I mean, planning. I use way too many repeated symbols and letters when I write, and I'll love Mr. Champagne endlessly…
About Mrs. Champagne

Excuse Me, But is that a Wig?

August 8th, 2008 @ 5:00 pm by Mrs. Champagne

I can’t lie- I wish I had hair down to my derriere. I always have. There’s one problem. I have curly hair, and I straighten it every day. For us gals who straighten and alter our natural hair every day, we know this = split ends. For our wedding, though, I always pictured I’d have long hair. The only problem with “wedding hair” is that I’ve never really looked like myself in a tiara, and a lot of hair photos include the classic tiara. Here are a few of my favorite wedding hairstyles: I think the first one is my favorite.

These are pretty as well, although instead of a tiara, my veil will be in place… more on that later!!

Now, I have another confession: I sometimes, on occasion wear a hair extension piece. Now don’t think I’m crazy, but it looks great! I was walking through the Prudential Mall when I lived in Boston and I saw one of those stands in the center of the mall. It was for Hair U Wear by Jessica Simpson. I was a skeptic at first, but I quickly became a believer. The first piece I purchased (you’re thinking.. she bought two!?.. yes, I did) was the 22″ straight one.

After loving the results of the first one, I took a leap and ordered the 23″ wavy piece. I can’t find any great pictures of it on me, but here are two times I’ve worn it- one was for Champ’s sister’s wedding as a bridesmaid, and the other was just a night out in Boston (that’s the back of my head). When I first told the hairstylist that I wanted to wear extensions, she kind of laughed- BUT- when she curled my hair and then saw the results- she was floored! She wanted to buy one herself.

The front is mostly my hair, and in the picture on the right you can see the back of the clip. I curled my hair, clipped in, and then curled the rest!

Another shot of the back view (I’m left)…

I also found a picture on the HairUWear website with a bride who decided to wear a piece on her big day. Looks good, right?! And for the women who have to worry about hair getting poofy because of humidity, or those who have hair that doesn’t curl or easily loses a curl this is a great option. And I promise, no one has ever noticed (or at least they’ve never told me)!

Anyone else consider a little “hair help” on your wedding day?! How will you deal with humid or dry conditions?

I have the wavy piece too! I love the way it looks on me, and I totally thought I would wear it for the big day…but….I have a tendency to play with my hair when I am wearing it….I think it’s because it’s just something foreign, so to avoid that, I will NOT be wearing it…but I’m still trying to decide if I should wear it for my day after shoot!

Most definitely! I’m growing my hair out for my wedding next fall, but I keep telling my mom that if it doesn’t get long enough I’ll just wear a piece! I also like that first pic best - it looks “bridal” without being overdone :)

I had a SERIOUS long, long battle with this. I’ve had long hair most all my life, but on occasion I randomly go short. A while ago I got a cute swing bob, and I really love it, but I realized that by the time the wedding rolled around, if I wanted it long, I’d have to start growing it out asap. BUT I loved my short hair. BUT I also loved my long hair, and couldn’t picture anything else for my wedding. Extensions was a consideration, but I was weirded out by looking so different in all my wedding photos than the photos in surrounding events, etc. Ultimately I just decided to grow it out. If you’re in a rush, you can take pre-natal vitamins or (slightly pricier) vitamins specifically formulated to grow your hair quickly.

Woot! I had hair help in my engagements, my bridal pictures and on my wedding day. I have pencil thin hair and really need the boost. I love love love them and nobody ever has even known they were in.

one of my cousins is a ballet dancer, and she was provided with clip in extensions for some performances and she liked them so much that she wears them when out on the town (though she felt a little awkward confessing it to a guy she took home once…)

I got extensions in May! My hair was just a little bit past my shoulders; now it’s down to my mid-back. They’re so much fun. I got the ones that are individual bunches of strands attached to my own hair. I spent 7 hours in a chair getting them done, but it was soooo worth it! I used to think extensions were cheesy, but I am a believer now!

I feel like i am reading a post in myself! Seriously I have the 23″ Wavy, I love it, but it is all frizzy now. What do you do to wash it and dry it? Also The first and second pics I have in myy favorites for wedding day hair. I love them both the first being more classic the second being more modern in a way! I am definately wearing extension I am growing my hair out, but it is to thin for those looks! Great taste we are on the same page!

I love the Hair U Wear! I had a cute bob when we got engaged but I am now in the awkward process of growing it out. I wil wear a piece regardless as my stick straight hair will not hold curls.

@ist: pre-natal vitamins TOTALLY work!! I’m going to start taking them again soon.

@Caitlin: I actually have to take really good care of them. After each wear I smooth them out and put them in a hairnet. I then put them in the box they came in so they stay flat. The straight one can be washed and brushed, but you have to be careful. I use a very wide tooth comb (like the ones you use in the shower) and the hairuwear synthetic shampoo. Ok stay with me because this is where it gets weird… to dry it I get a 2 liter soda bottle and place the whole piece over it- brushing it occasionally as it dries. I know- weird… but it works!

This is a good post….extensions/weaves are truly a good option if you either have short hair and want to go long, or want a fuller look. I have had many weaves (extensions that are sewn in and not clipped) so I’m all for it! Like you said, your hair is less likely to frizz/poof and no one can tell. I’m surprised more brides don’t go this route…or maybe they do and we just can’t tell….

I wear my extensions all the time! They’re 7 individual clip-ins and they look fantastic! I just wore them at my bff’s destination wedding in Cancun. It was such a humid day but you could barely tell because I had on extensions and they stayed stick straight! I definitely plan on wearing them on my wedding day for a long, full head of hair!

A friend of mine had clip in extensions because she was in an 80s hair band by night and worked at a bank by day =) Seeing hers, I really wanted some for my wedding. I ended up getting a couple of long strips with some smaller strands woven into my hair and they did make a big difference

My hair is even shorter now - post-wedding hair chop - so I was thinking that this Hair U Wear might work better. After seeing this post today, I bought the 23 inch relaxed curl and it’ll be here in 4 days!! Yay for fun hair options :)

I had clip-in extensions made so I could wear my hair 1/2-up for the wedding :) It made an enormous difference, and it was only about $90 to make 3 custom falls. No one had any clue!

Oh, how can anyone with thin hair not understand this? I got one of the ones from the mall that’s on a comb and has three sections on wires that you can wrap around your updo any way you want. Totally got compliments when I wore it and no one ever guessed.

I would totally go for this if I weren’t going for an up-do. I never think they’re quite invisible in straight hair but with curls they blend right in.

I never thought of extensions, but I am TOTALLY looking up that site now.

I’m doing “up” with birdcage veil for the ceremony and “down” and wavy for the reception. This’ll be perfect!

Thanks Champs.

I have a disease where I’ve lost most of the bottom half of my hair, so I’ve definitely toyed with the idea of getting extensions (especially since I want to wear my hair like the first pic!). Those look great on you! I wanted to go with those extensions but I have red hair, and it’s hard to figure out what my match will be. I may end up going to a beauty supply store instead.

My friend is a hairstylist and also my MOH. She offered to do my hair the day of the wedding and she suggested this very thing!! I was so thrilled to see your post. I have more confidence now about doing it. I think I will do a test-run like you did and see what I think. Thanks for reminding me of this. :)

@Lisa: HairUWear has a color sample kit that they send out, if you’re interested. Otherwise, I know that some beauty supply stores have a good selection. I found my matching color by finding a hairuwear seller in the mall. Good luck:)

Great minds think alike - that first picture (the brunette with the veil) is the exact same picture I’m taking to my hair stylist for inspiration!

Good luck with your day!

I’ve been contemplating on clip on hair extensions, I’m just worried that if someone hugs me or something, they’ll pull out! Are the ones that you have pretty secure?!

@Samantha: VERY secure. They have several clips along the top and all the way around to the bottom. I believe there are seven clips in all.
@Jennifer: Thanks!

Great idea! Thanks for sharing. A lot of people feel self-conscious about sharing this type of info (I guess because they want people to think they were blessed with naturally “perfect” hair). Question - what about hair texture? Are there any of these hair clips with hair that would look natural on a Black woman? I love Wedding Bee but I never see any blog posts about issues that Black women & Latinas specifically deal with. Hair is a biggie for me, and I can’t find any realistic hair inspiration from anything I’ve seen on Wedding Bee. :( Maybe I need to apply to be a blogger to help other women like me who - I’m sure - are reading Wedding Bee.

But anyway, we’ll be getting married in my mother’s country - Costa Rica - and we plan to do a group activity - like ziplining or white water rafting - the day before the wedding to get folks to bond. The problem is that it’s SERIOUSLY going to jack up my hair! So I don’t know if we should schedule the group activity for the day after the wedding (and skip the pre-wedding bonding) or bring my hair stylist down to Costa Rica with me (he’s ok; not great). Or just do my hair myself and (thanks to you, Miss Champagne, for the inspiration), just do my hair myself (i.e., lots of products, a great curling iron & blow dryer, and one of these hair clips!) and call it a day. Using one of the stylists down there is not an option since I need personal experience with a stylist before I’ll trust him/her with my hair on the BIG DAY!

Hair, hair, hair…what a big deal it is (yes, there are more serious thins like the economy, but I’m sure ou all feel me about hair!)…and only because you don’t want to be remembered as the frizzy-haired, crazy looking bride. LOL

Argh. The last paragraph should say “things” (not thins”) and “you” (not “ou”). Darn laptop keys are temperamental. :)
