Fittin’ the Gals

August 8th, 2008 @ 9:27 am by Mrs. Green Tea

The whole BM dress situation was a huge headache I brought onto myself. Let’s just say we were working with a long list of criteria and the perfect dress was impossible to find. The mister and I seriously considered just selecting a fabric so the girls could pick their own dresses, but since we’re limited to choosing an online Chinese dress vendor (each girl lives in a different city), we decided it would be easier for everyone to just pick out one single dress. We settled for a black dress for $110, which has beautiful embroidery on it. The dress is well made, but the piping turned out BURGUNDY instead of red like in the picture! I was upset for awhile, but having each girl return and repurchase dresses seemed too much to ask, so we’re living with it.

Here’s my MOH modeling the whole outfit:

I bought the pale gold shoes for each girl as a courtesy, and they are welcome to wear something else if they’d prefer. In lieu of bouquets, they will each be given one of these Chinese silk fans to hold (and to use while standing there in the heat). I made these earrings for them as well:
I aimed for everything to be re-wearable, and my MOH swears she’ll wear them all again (and she has already worn the shoes to work). It’s really hard to find a ‘uniform’ for four people of different size, shape, taste, personality, and flare! I probably fell short in making everyone 100% happy in this case, but I tried my best, and fortunately the girls seem to be supportive about the end result.

I must admit, I felt a bit like a Nazi requiring everyone to buy and wear a specific dress just because I’m getting married. I realize most people expect it when they agree to be a bridesmaid, but it doesn’t make me feel much better. Most people I tell this to, including our own wedding party , just think that I’m nuts.

Did you have a fun and/or difficult time outfitting your wedding party?

I felt the same way. I ended up going the route of picking the fabric and designer and let them pick the dress. I felt horrible taht they ended up costing over $100 but they swore it was no rpoblem and laughed at how bad I felt. I ended up helping with some of them (others absolutely refused my help and others didn’t know they got it). Most of them selected dresses on their own that I doubt they will ever wear again. My sister said she didn’t care cause she missed her high school prom so this was making up for it!!

I was definitely aware of the expenses - especially since 3 of my BMs had to travel too. My goal was to pick the least expensive possible dress, but my gals had nothing to complain about because they picked it themselves! They wanted chocolate brown and I wanted red so I was a little nervous but it ended up being PERFECT.

Love the dresses - they look great on your MOH.

I feel your pain - shopping for BM dresses sucks big time. Your dresses are great and I especially love that they’re going to carry fans. How cool!

I recently made the decision to go the same route as Miss Pineapple, but with a catch: the dresses will all be within a certain range of grays, and fall somewhere between having a sheen and actually being shiny. I put together a very simple collage on Polyvore of different dresses that were different shades of gray and had different levels of “shinyness” to give them an idea. This way everyone can pick a dress that they like and are comfortable in, while also making a personal decision as to whether they want to invest in something they will wear again or go for something cheaper knowing they will only wear it once. After the dresses are purchased, we’re hoping to tie them together through a matching red accessory or a jewelry item incorporating Tahitian pearls (my engagement ring is a Tahitian pearl rather than a diamond).

Ohhh they turned out so CUTE! You can’t even tell they’re burgundy - I’m sure only you will notice! Your attention to detail is flawless, my dear.

good job on the earrings! I had one attendant, so it allowed me to give her pretty free reign in choosing her attire. I just requested no patterns, unless tone on tone, and to keep in mind the church’s faded teal rug, and the general tone I set with my dress. She twice bought dresses and said she wanted the dress anyway, what did I think of her using it for the wedding? and I said yes to the second one.

having one MOH and no BMs made the whole matching thing pretty easy. i told her that i wanted her to pick a dress she would wear again in a medium shade of blue. she wanted to go shopping with me, but found something in her travels. she sent pics via email about some contenders, but ended up buying something else. i will admit to being a smidge nervous about the shade, as it’s brighter than i expected, but it looks great on her and no one will be running up with a swatch during the ceremony, so no biggie. :) like you, miss GT, i just let it go, which feels pretty darn good.

fabulous earrings, btw!

First, you picked the one dress style in the world that really does look flattering on most people, so feel good about that. Second, I bet at least half of the girls will wear the dress again, because it’s a dress that’s actually is very wearable…modest, festive, and doesn’t scream wedding (perfect for the xmas holidays). Third, burgundy may end up being a blessing, because at the end of the day it’s not the exact shade of the dresses or trim that matters, it’s how it all comes together with the backdrop as a background for you & your groom. The fan is very cute, I debated what to do myself and went with parasols, which I ended up loving. Plain white paper parasols work wonders at keeping the heat off & look smashing in pictures; they give everything a pulled together, dreamy vibe, and are very flattering to the girls with the soft light they throw on the girls faces…I wish I could post the back-lit pics of my girls. As far as what I did, I asked my girls to pick their own dress as long as it was a solid color and was knee length, and their own shoes. They all went with a dress that was either blue or green, and all looked confident & beautiful. (And all found something in their price range, one of my sisters wore a Betsy Johnson dress that she’d worn in another wedding, it was gorgeous!) They carried white parasols & white tulips– loosely bunched & tied with ivory satin ribbon– (total cost, $10 ea for the flowers + $10 ea for the parasols). The white brought the whole thing together, though they could have done just the parasols and looked smashing. I carried ivory roses & tulips with an ivory ribbon, and no parasol, though I wish I’d posed for a couple pictures with one. And this I say on behalf of all the bridesmaids out there: If anyone is thinking about letting your girls pick their own dress, you really have to mean it. If you micro-manage, it will drive them nuts and be way more annoying for them than if you just send a link and say “buy this”. If you really want ultimate control over how they look, accept the fact and do what you want! They won’t mind. My girls were constantly checking in with me, saying ‘are you sure this is ok? what are they guidelines again? They’d each had a rough experience with someone more in love with the idea of their bridesmaids picking their own dresses than the reality of it. I’ve worn some hideous bridesmaids dresses on behalf of the girls I love, and no, I will never wear those again, nor the gorgeous lavender strapless floor length satin number, but who cares? It’s part of my memory of my best friends weddings, and they were happy and so was I.
