Free Font Frenzy

FREe FoNts aRe Fun

When it comes to computers and design, I must admit my experience is limited to college papers and projects. Sure I’ve used Powerpoint and Photoshop, but our computer has very few font options. I still remember typing papers and using Courier font to make the document longer… pathetic. Because we didn’t want our invites and STDs to be in Times New Roman, I had to explore our options.

I knew there had to be sites that provided free fonts, but I didn’t want to download a potential virus or open up our computer to any strangers. I thought I should investigate the world of free fonts a little!

First off, when you Google “free fonts” there are a TON of results that come up. Obviously there are many duplicate fonts out there in the free world, so no one site is really that much better than another, but there are some that are great if you know what font you are looking for.

1001 Free Fonts has a GREAT feature… you can search by genre. For me, this meant I could search Calligraphy fonts alone. Here are some of my faves:

1. Adine Kirnberg font
2. Freebooter Script font3. Scriptina Font
These are just a few of MANY calligraphy fonts on 1001FreeFonts.com. There’s also a 7000 font package for around $20. Too many choices for this bride! On to the next site…

I’m sure many brides are aware of www.Perfect TablePlan.com. This site allows members to arrange and organize all that needs arranging for your big day. One of the free features is the calligraphy font package. All the fonts in this package are free, and some of them could be beautiful for DIY wedding projects.

I’ve used Chopin Script font for a few projects, but I’m pretty sure some guests would notice if I used the Walt Disney font for our invitation… not exactly the romantic elegant feeling we’re going for.

Lastly, the site I’ve used most and has been extremely easy to use is Fonts 500. The fonts are all very easy to see, and there’s no need to scroll through so many when they’re right on a few pages. I actually learned of this site from Geeksugar, a site that gives some good tech advice. One great feature of this website is that you can enter personal text as a sample on the page. Good if you’re looking for a great invite font, because you can type “you’re invited” and see all of the fonts display that wording at once. Try it!

Free fonts can be fun, right? Anyone else have good sites to recommend?

I used the same website to address my envelopes. I wanted to use Shelley Allegro Script which happens to be an exact match to ALS Script. Shelley you have to pay for and ALS Script is free!

Also, many of the type designers on dafont have websites with additional free fonts for downloading. And while not exactly free (that is, not free at all), myfonts.com and linotype.com allow you to try out your text in different fonts, which is of course extremely useful before buying.

Great suggestions! dafont saved my life. This looks like it could be funky… turns your handwriting into a font: http://www.fontifier.com/

Maybe not for wedding invites but something else?

I used Adine Kirnberg font on all of my invitations and signs. It seems to be the “perfect” font. Perfectly readable. Perfectly Swirly in all the right places. The capital letters are nice and swishy, while th elittle letters are compact and easy to read.

i *heart* fonts… while i would love to pay designers for their hard work on delicious fonts, i don’t really have $90+ bucks to drop, so these free sites are a great way to indulge my inner font geek!
