Will You Be Mine?

August 10th, 2008 @ 12:02 pm by Mrs. Champagne

Ok, well not really will you be mine per se, but will you be my bridesmaid!? When Champ and I first started talking about our bridal party, I knew that it was inevitable- all of my bridesmaids would be at least 500 miles away and I would have to ask them in some way other than in person. I had read a few wedding blogs and sites stating that it was “rude” and “impersonal” to ask via phone or snail-mail, so I really wanted to make sure my bridesmaids knew how much they meant to me and how special they are.

I visited the amazing Paper Source for some paper inspiration and here ’tis.

For my six bridesmaids, I purchased A2 size notecards and envelopes in the following colors: Stardream gold, lake, sage, pool, rhubarb, and stardream opal.

Using the gocco ink I already had from Northwood Studio, I made some personalized notecards. I also used one of the free fonts I had downloaded from 1001 Free fonts using the category “calligraphy fonts”, freebooter script… it’s beautiful:

So I goccoed the following combos:

1. Stardream gold, black ink, 2. lake, gold ink (gorgeous!) 3. sage, black ink 4. pool, black ink 5.rhubarb, white ink, and 6. stardream opal, aqua marine pearl ink (also gorgeous!)

I then used the graphic below from our save the dates (the next thing on my ever growing list of things to share with you!) and our monogram for the bottom of the notecard and for the outside of the envelopes.

And here is what they looked like:

Will You Be Mine? : wedding bridesmaid diy gocco vail Note01I used Gelly Roll pens in gold and silver for the personal notes, and wrapped the cards in, what else? Damask wrapping paper - I love me some damask!

Where’s waldo?! Our little dog Max is staring at me as always during my projects. Probably wants to eat the packages.

How did you ask your bridesmaids to be in your wedding? Do you think it’s impersonal to ask from afar by snail mail?!

I think these are beautiful! I may do something like this for thank-you’s.

I asked 4 of my 5 bridesmaids in person, and the 5th is long distance and I asked her over the phone. I don’t know if it was tacky (maybe it was! lol!) but she was thrilled and excited nonetheless. The hardest part for me was telling some of my best friends that I didn’t pick them (We agreed on 5 each in the bridal party and I had 8 or 9 GOOD girlfriends).

That is a great idea! I wish I would have done something fun to ask my bridesmaids - but I was so excited I just blurted it out on the phone!

Good work!

I gave cards asking 3 out of 4 of my girls.

My fourth bridesmaid is a very good friend that I knew was also going to be getting married around that time, and she was moving across the country in a matter of months.

I didn’t want her to feel pressured to say yes. I simply explained to her that I would be honored to have her beside me, but to think about it and make sure that it was going to be a financial burden (cost of being a BM + travel) / time burden since she would be dedicated to my wedding just 7 weeks before her own.

I think people love receiving things in the post and in some ways it feels even more special than asking them in person. Plus they have a keepsake :)

Ok. I have to say that it being “impersonal” to ask via snail mail is a ridiculous statement. Phone? Probably. Email? Most likely. Snail mail…umm - this is how we ask people to come to our weddings…. how is it not acceptable for asking for a bridesmaid?!
Granted, I also think the mental shift of needing a special thing to ask about being a bridesmaid is really just the wedding industry convincing us of something else we dont need. That being said… I think what you created is AMAZING and touching and sweet and VERY personal.
I ask all my girls via telephone. I’ll be formal for everything else, but for my friends I want to be me… and that tends to mean practical and sometimes a little blah. oh well - they love me as I am! (Thank goodness!)

Beautiful! I don’t think it’s impersonal at all. Too bad I’m not so crafty…

What we did (since ALL of our attendants live far far away) was send a “Mission:Impossible”-style DVD to each girl/guy–via snail mail. At the end of each person’s DVD was a photo of either myself with that girl or FI with that guy. they were then instructed to call us before the DVD self-destructed ;).

Let me tell you, they all LOVED it, and not one of them thought it was tacky or rude.

I asked 4 out of 5 of mine via phone and followed up with a thank you card to make it a little more personal. Most of them knew before we even told our parents (we wanted to ask both sets in person)

How is the phone tacky or not personal? I would say that a piece of paper is less personal than phone, and phone is less personal than in person. I asked all of my bm by phone as I do not live in the same town as any of them anymore. And one is more than 1000 miles away. We all keep in touch via emails and occasionally calling each other. We have even told people, in person, they were invited to the wedding way before we sent the invitations.

Rude and impersonal to ask someone to be your bridesmaid? The person you’re asking to be a bridesmaid should be honored, not bent out of shape because you didn’t ask her the right way.

Your notecards are beautiful! All of my bridesmaids are far away - while I’m in DC, they are in Chicago, Florida, North Carolina and Georgia! I handmade cards for each of them, and they loved them! Two I got to give in person, and the other two were mailed.

definitely not impersonal, especially when you consider that it’s more than apparent that you took time to handwrite each note and made it specific to each of your friends. your cards are beautiful!

@Starry-eyed Barefoot Bride: @Sara: @rebecca: I completely agree that it’s not impersonal. I’m so excited to have the girls with me on such a special occasion! I also loved that there was a certain element of surprise. My BMs were really excited when they got the cards in the mail and a few were so surprised! They were so grateful and their responses were very genuine because of the surprise.

oh and kat- Max ALWAYS stares at me. I think he’s jealous when I’m involved in projects because it takes away from doggie time. Very cute :)
