Let Them Eat Cake!

August 11th, 2008 @ 3:03 pm by Miss Sweet Tea

After our tasting with Pigéon’s last Friday, Mama ST, my lovely DOC, and I were on to our next task: cake tasting! I could not wait to get some yummy red velvet cake in my tummy, since it’s been impossible to find good red velvet west of the Mason Dixon. :(

We went to two bakeries and were so into it that I forgot to take pictures besides this one of my crazy face! Whoops…

At the bakery we ultimately chose, Royal Cakery, we sampled some amazing cake flavors: carrot cake, my beloved red velvet, then almond cake with five different fillings (lemon curd, peaches and cream, fresh strawberry, Grand Marnier, and praline hazelnut). They were all so delicious, it was hard to decide which ones to pick!

Luckily (or maybe unluckily for my waistline), we may be having not one, but two cakes for the wedding. The wedding cake, which will look something like a two-tiered version of this (including the milk glass cake stand):

And the traditional Southern groom’s cake, which will not look like this, no matter how much Mr. ST wants it to:

(As much as I love Steel Magnolias, something tells me our guests won’t see the irony of cutting open a giant bleeding armadillo.)

If we go with two cakes, we’ll have some combination of the red velvet, Grand Marnier, and peaches and cream flavors. If not, then it’s red velvet all the way! Mmmm, red velvet.

What flavors will your cake be?

Here’s a random bit of trivia… did you know that armadillos are the only other carrier of leprosy? Mmm, tasty…

I am soooo jealous of your red velvet cake! Unfortunately the hubby wasn’t as thrilled about it (translation: OBSESSED) as I was.

Sweet tea and red velvet, how sublime :)

Our wedding cake was two layers of white cake with buttercream frosting in the middle and two layers of white cake with fresh strawberries and cream in the middle. Our groom’s cake was half red velvet and half chocolate. What can I say, our families love cake!!

We’re having each layer be two flavors– one half chocolate, and one half key lime, with raspberry filling and key lime buttercream icing. Our cake is one of the things I’m most excited about!

That cake shot is one of my all-time favorites! I was originally going to go with it as well, but then, y’know I couldn’t choose just one…. But I LOVE the way the icing looks.

Like you, I ADORE red velvet. I make some mean red velvet cupcakes if I do say so myself! I usually make tons for my fam and co-workers during the holiday season.

Our cake will be coconut flavored! My ultimate favorite! We are getting married in Hawaii so we had to go with a local flavor! The layers will be slathered with an amaretto cream…mmm mmm! For our AHR I’m pretty sure we will be having red velvet as well. The beautiful red cake will match our dark red wedding color :)

If I was getting married back home in New Orleans, I’d definitely be having red velvet cake, but alas, we moved to Colorado and I doubt I’d find a baker here who could make a great red velvet cake. . .

I’m sure the Sweet Teas aren’t the cake smashing type but be careful because red velvet cake can really stain wedding dresses. But what a wonderful flavor!
