The Marilyn Dress

August 12th, 2008 @ 2:24 pm by Mrs. Avocado

I love Marilyn Monroe. I collect calendars, clothes, watches, and even perfume branded with her name and image. I love her confidence, her curves, and her clothes. My mom’s mom is also named Marilyn, and has apparently been hiding away her 1950’s wedding dress in the back of one of her closets all of these years. She pulled it out and I fell in love. It looks exactly like the Marilyn Monroe style that I have always swooned over, and I was thrilled to have the chance to put it on this weekend (and that it zipped up!).

My little sister and MOH might have been a little annoyed at my insistence that the bride should be the one to try the dress on and prance around in it.

We asked Grandma what was up with the pointy breast style that her dress is sporting. It’s some serious pre-Madonna conage action happening. She couldn’t remember why all the girls thought that was so attractive back in the day.

I cannot believe that I never picked up the phone to call and ask if any relatives still had their wedding dresses, and if they might be open to the idea of me wearing it for my wedding dress. I still love my dress (and can’t wait to go pick it up in 2 weeks), but there is so much significance behind wearing a dress passed down through the generations. For a dress not cleaned or preserved in any way, it’s in rather good condition. Grandma even thinks she let us grandkids play dress-up in it when we were younger. I cringe at the thought of how careless I probably was with such a treasure.

Grandpa, Grandma, and myself.

The 50’s style dresses are so fun to swish and spin around in. This shot highlights the two problems with the dress. See the ripped netting swinging around behind me, and my cone shaped breasts :)

My grandma and grandpa own and live on a diary, and while we were outside taking pictures on the lawn, my sister MOH runs out in a full length cow pantsuit. The resulting photos are marvelous.

She is going to hate me for posting these. Let’s all let her know how hot she looks as a bovine.

Those pictures are fantastic all around! I am curious about one thing…In your cake-tasting post, you mentioned that you’re living with dairy, egg, and gluten free folks (your family?)…with your grandparents being dairy farmers, how did that come to be? Sorry if that’s too nosy, it’s just pure curiosity that fuels the question!

Sister Avocado in the cow suit is HILARIOUS! Love Grandma Avocado’s dress - it’s so very Marilyn and looks adorable on you, pointy cone boobs and all!

My sister wore my mother’s wedding dress, which was quite similar in style - and also had the whole boob-as-a-weapon thing going on. We had a seamstress take in the bodice just a little and sew in a set of cups - interestingly enough she actually didn’t alter the line, just the overall fit - and once you actually fill out the bodice they get considerably less pointy looking. Overall, it was gorgeous.

I tried on my great grandmothers dress after I bought mine and am SO thankful that it was a little too small or I would have been kicking myself! Great pics!

@mandoo: Yeah, I guess we are pretty fun.

@missx: So my sister and dad are gluten/dairy/egg free, and my mom is dairy free. They all had their allergies tested about a year ago and have since completely changed their diets (and feel so much better). The night we took these photos we went to my grandma’s house for lunch and my sweet little grandma worked so hard to make a meal that my entire family could eat (and she made sure to throw in a few treats like homemade rolls and fresh whole milk for me!)

@Miss Avocado: Thanks for indulging my nosy question! My best friend (MOH), as well as her mom and sisters, have gluten allergies. I remember when they were each finding out about their allergy. They had such a hard time adjusting (I am still amazed at how many things include gluten), but like you said, they all feel SO much better now that they are on their GF diets.
