Birmingham Bound

Mr. Pinot Noir and I are headed to Birmingham, Alabama this weekend for a wedding. Mr. PN and the groom were college roommates! This is my first southern wedding and I am really looking forward to it! I am especially excited about practicing our new dance moves.

We are flying into Atlanta on Thursday night and then on Friday morning we will be picking up Mr. PN’s kilt from the kilt maker! I’m really looking forward to seeing Mr. PN in his wedding outfit for the first time!

Since Mr. PN is a groomsman in the wedding, he will be doing lots of wedding party duties and activities on Friday and Saturday, which leaves me on my own to explore Birmingham. I will have all day Saturday since the wedding doesn’t start until 7 PM.

So, Southern Bees, what should I do and see in this fine southern city?

I’ve visited Birmingham only once, but i wholeheartedly second the Civil Rights Museum suggestion. Powerful and moving.

Hey! I live in Birmingham.

Great places to eat dinner or grab a great cocktail…
Highlands Bar and Grill
Bottega Restaurant and Cafe
Chez Fonfon
all of those are owned by Frank Stitt, who is sort of a famous chef. The first two have websites and Chez Fonfon is right next door to Highlands in 5 Points.
My favorite greasy hangover curing breakfast is The Anchorage in Homewood. It’s in the phone book. They serve breakfast until 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

The best big name shopping (Saks, Anthropologie, Banana Republic, JCrew, Apple Store to name a few) is at the Summit which is located off Hwy 280 at the 459 junction. It’s like a really nice strip mall. It’s all outdoors, not a typical big mall building with no windows. Two other good places to shop are the cities of Homewood and Mountain Brook. These are two small cities that are really part of Birmingham if you ask me and very close to the city…in fact, your friends might live there. A lot of younger couples live in one place or the other. Where are y’all staying? Both places have great smaller boutiques and locally owned stores.

On Saturday mornings, we have a great farmer’s market downtown at Pepper Place. It’s mostly veggies, but they have live music, cooking demos, crafts and yummy food to eat as well. It opens at 6 or 7am and goes until noon or 1. The area that it’s in is a great place to shop for home stuff, antiques, and knick knacks. There is a great taco place right there called Cantina.

Oh, there is so much more to add. If you want specific suggestions or directions, etc. email me at kmwhl1 (at) gmail dot com.

I live in Birmingham and love the surrounding areas but downtown isn’t all that great (besides 5 points). Downtown Homewood is a great area and has some unique shops and restaurants (jacksons, o’carrs). Some of the “southern” wedding traditions that you may not see elsewhere are the bridal portraits (pics of the bride at the wedding in her wedding dress) and the grooms cake.

The Civil Rights museum is a must see. FI and I took a day trip from Atlanta one Saturday and it was amazing. Still in awe. And at the end it was quite overwhelming to me to see that impacted a diverse group of tourist the same way as me.
we ate at Bonefish near a mall but I don’t remember which one.
It is a great city- wish you had more time in Atlanta!

Oh I love the 4-H center. We thought about doing our vow renewal there, but it was such a haul for everybody and I was worried about drinking and driving. Very cute space though.

Have fun in our lovely city. It’s a little weird, but it’s ours. :)
